Generally, no: mudskippers are best known from brackish coastal and intertidal habitats, where they use both shallow water and exposed, humid land. Their natural surroundings can vary in salinity as freshwater flows in and rain falls, but that does not make them ordinary freshwater aquarium fish. Exact needs depend on the species.
What kind of water do mudskippers live in?
Mudskippers are commonly associated with tropical mudflats, mangrove swamps, estuaries, lagoons, and wetlands. Aquarium of the Pacific profiles of the Atlantic mudskipper and dwarf Indian mudskipper describe brackish to normal seawater conditions. Zoo Leipzig describes brackish coastal habitats whose salt content changes with freshwater inflow and frequent rain.

That natural variability is a feature of coastal habitats, not a recommendation to make aquarium water fluctuate. The sources do not establish one salinity range for all mudskipper species, or show that no mudskipper ever enters freshwater. The sound general distinction is that mudskippers are not typically kept or described as ordinary freshwater fish.

How mudskippers differ from typical freshwater aquarium fish
| Feature | Mudskippers | Typical fully aquatic freshwater fish |
|---|---|---|
| Habitat | Often brackish coastal and intertidal areas, including mudflats, estuaries, and mangroves (Aquarium of the Pacific; Zoo Leipzig). | Freshwater habitat; this is a general contrast, not a description of every freshwater species. |
| Use of land | Amphibious: they move between water and exposed land as part of normal habitat use (Zoo Leipzig; Aquarium of the Pacific). | Generally remain submerged. |
| Habitat structure | Need shallow water as well as humid exposed space; Aquarium of the Pacific describes humid conditions and shallow water. | A fully submerged aquarium does not provide the land-water arrangement mudskippers use. |
| Care guidance | Salinity and other husbandry details need to be matched to the species; a universal numeric range is not established by the cited sources. | Requirements vary by species; freshwater care guidance cannot simply be applied to mudskippers. |
Why can mudskippers spend time out of water?
Mudskippers are fish with amphibious adaptations, not amphibians. Zoo Leipzig explains that water retained in their gill chambers provides oxygen while they are on land, and that mucus-covered scales help protect them from drying. Aquarium of the Pacific also describes their ability to breathe air and move on land.
#1 Best Overall
These adaptations support time in humid, exposed habitat; they do not mean a mudskipper can live indefinitely in dry air or without suitable water. Their land use is one reason a conventional tank that keeps the fish completely submerged is an unsuitable picture of their habitat.
What should their habitat provide in captivity?
The general care picture is a habitat with both shallow brackish water and a humid land area where the fish can rest. Aquarium Industries’ care sheet recommends a large, shallow tank, soft sand, and features such as mangrove roots for resting. Aquarium of the Pacific likewise describes humid conditions and shallow water.
Rank #2
The Aquarium Industries sheet recommends artificial sea salt to reach the desired salinity. It supports using marine aquarium salt mix as a product category for preparing brackish water; it does not establish a particular brand, a universal numeric salinity, tank size, or complete care protocol.
- Identify the mudskipper species before setting water conditions.
- Plan for both shallow water and humid exposed resting space rather than a fully submerged setup.
- Use species-specific husbandry guidance to determine salinity and other exact care details; the general habitat descriptions do not supply a universal recipe.
What do mudskippers eat?
Wild diet examples in zoo and aquarium profiles include insects, worms, and small crustaceans. Aquarium of the Pacific also lists diatoms and algae, while the Singapore Oceanarium mentions insects and algae supplemented by plant material. These are examples of natural foods, not a complete captive feeding schedule. The cited profiles do not establish a branded food or full feeding plan.
