It depends on which plant you mean. The rubber tree, Ficus elastica, has sap that can irritate a cat’s mouth and digestive tract if eaten. The baby or American rubber plant, Peperomia obtusifolia, is listed by the ASPCA as non-toxic to cats. Check the botanical name—not just “rubber plant”—to know which one you have.

Are rubber plants toxic to cats?

Ficus elastica, commonly called the rubber tree, can cause oral irritation and minor gastrointestinal distress if a cat chews or eats it. Pet Poison Helpline lists drooling, retching, and vomiting among possible signs after exposure to its sap in leaves and stems. The ASPCA lists Peperomia obtusifolia, also called the baby or American rubber plant, as non-toxic to cats.

These are different plants despite their similar common names. The descriptions are general guidance, not a prediction of what will happen to an individual cat; a veterinarian can advise based on the suspected exposure and the cat’s condition.

Is a baby rubber plant the same as a rubber tree?

No. The names refer to different species, with different cat-toxicity listings. Use the scientific name on a plant label or seller’s listing, and check the identification against a reliable plant profile.

Common name Scientific name Cat-specific listing and effects
Rubber tree Ficus elastica Pet Poison Helpline describes oral irritation and minor gastrointestinal distress, including drooling, retching, and vomiting. Pet Poison Helpline
Baby or American rubber plant Peperomia obtusifolia Listed as non-toxic to cats by the ASPCA. ASPCA
Fig / Indian rubber plant Ficus benjamina Listed as toxic to cats by the ASPCA, with gastrointestinal and dermal irritation. ASPCA

The Ficus benjamina listing is another reason not to rely on common names: the ASPCA calls it “Fig” and also “Indian rubber plant.” If a label gives only a broad or ambiguous name, ask the seller or a plant specialist to confirm the species.

What signs might a cat show after chewing a rubber tree?

Pet Poison Helpline describes irritation of the mouth and minor gastrointestinal distress from Ficus elastica sap. Possible signs include drooling, retching, and vomiting. Merck Veterinary Manual discusses Ficus species more broadly: sap compounds can be associated with contact dermatitis, while ingestion has limited toxic effects because absorption is poor. These general descriptions cannot establish the severity or outcome of a particular cat’s exposure.

What should I do if my cat ate a rubber plant?

  1. Identify the plant. Check its label or purchase listing for the scientific name, such as Ficus elastica, Peperomia obtusifolia, or Ficus benjamina.
  2. Contact a veterinarian for advice. If you suspect your cat ingested a poisonous plant, the ASPCA advises contacting a veterinarian or ASPCA Animal Poison Control at (888) 426-4435. Provide the plant’s scientific name if known and describe what happened.
  3. Watch for signs and follow professional guidance. Drooling, retching, vomiting, or skin irritation are relevant signs described for these Ficus plants. Do not use a general plant listing to diagnose your cat or decide that care is unnecessary.

Does “non-toxic to cats” mean a plant is safe to chew?

No. The ASPCA cautions that eating any plant material can cause vomiting or gastrointestinal upset in cats and dogs, including plants listed as non-toxic. Its plant list also notes that it is not all-inclusive and that individual plants may differ from listing photos. A non-toxic listing is not an invitation to let a cat eat the plant.

How can I choose a rubber plant for a cat household?

  • Check the scientific name: distinguish Ficus elastica from Peperomia obtusifolia; do not treat “rubber plant” as a precise identification.
  • Verify the cat-specific listing: the ASPCA lists Peperomia obtusifolia as non-toxic to cats. If considering it as an alternative, confirm that exact botanical name on the plant listing.
  • Keep plants out of reach: even non-toxic plants may upset a cat’s stomach if eaten, and common names can be confusing.
