A bell collar is not automatically harmful to every cat, but it adds a possible snag point to a collar that can already catch or trap a cat. The clearest documented concern is physical injury—not proven damage to hearing from the bell’s sound. If you use one, choose a quick-release collar, fit it carefully, and check that claws cannot catch in the bell.

What are the risks of a bell collar?

Cats Protection warns that collars can catch on objects or trap a paw, potentially causing serious injury. Bells, discs and other attachments can also catch in small spaces. A quick-release buckle reduces the risk of a cat remaining trapped, but it cannot make every collar fit or accessory safe.

Sarah Elliott, Central Veterinary Officer at Cats Protection, said: “We have seen too many injuries caused by collars, where cats have got caught while playing, hunting or trying to escape from danger.” (Cats Protection’s collar guidance.)

Do bells hurt a cat’s hearing or cause distress?

The sources available here do not establish whether ordinary bell sounds damage feline hearing or cause measurable distress. That is not proof that every cat is comfortable with a bell. Pay attention to your cat’s behavior, and ask a veterinarian for advice if your cat seems distressed or develops an injury related to its collar.

Can a bell stop a cat catching birds or other wildlife?

A bell may reduce a cat’s hunting success, but it is not a guarantee. Cats Protection says work by the RSPB found fewer birds caught by cats wearing bells. A Cats Protection magazine extract reports the RSPB survey result as 34% fewer mammals and 41% fewer birds. The survey year and methods are not established in that report, so treat the figures as a secondary-source account rather than a result that can be assumed for every cat or setting. (Cats Protection magazine extract.)

For other ways to reduce hunting opportunities, Cats Protection suggests indoor play and limiting outdoor access at dawn and dusk, which it describes as prime hunting times.

How to make a collar safer if you choose one

  1. Choose a quick-release or snap-opening collar. Cats Protection recommends these rather than elasticated collars. The release is intended to open if the collar catches; it does not remove every risk.
  2. Check the fit. Cats Protection’s 2025 Keeping Your Cat Safe guide advises that two fingers should fit snugly beneath the collar. Check that the collar is not so loose that your cat can slip a leg through it.
  3. Check the bell and other attachments. Make sure your cat’s claws cannot catch in the bell, and consider whether any tag or accessory could snag in a small space.
  4. Inspect the collar regularly. Check the fit and look for damage or changes that could make it loose, tight or less likely to release properly.

Does a cat need a collar for identification?

No. Cats Protection identifies microchipping as the safer way to identify a lost cat. A collar tag may provide visible information, but it is not a substitute for permanent identification by microchip.

When to remove the collar and seek advice

If the collar is caught, trapping a paw, or causing an injury, remove it if you can do so safely and contact a veterinarian about an injury. If your cat appears distressed while wearing a bell, take the bell off and ask your veterinarian for advice. For identification, a microchip does not require keeping a potentially snag-prone collar on the cat.
