Are Squirrels Suitable Pets? Understanding the Real Pros, Cons, and Safer Choices

Squirrels may look charming, but official wildlife and health agencies advise against keeping them as pets. Learn the risks and the right response to a baby squirrel.

No. Squirrels do not make good household pets. They are wild animals, not domesticated companions. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says, “Small mammals like squirrels and other rodents shouldn’t be kept as pets.” Their activity, independence, potential for destructive behavior, property damage, health and safety concerns, and local legal restrictions make ordinary pet ownership unsuitable. If you find a young or injured squirrel, contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator instead of trying to raise it yourself.

What makes a good pet—and where squirrels differ

A suitable household pet is domesticated for life with people, can have its physical and behavioral needs met safely in a home, and can receive appropriate veterinary care. A squirrel fails that basic test because it remains a wild animal even when it is hand-raised or appears tame.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources describes adult squirrels as active and independent and warns that they can become dangerous and destructive. A squirrel that accepts food from a person has learned an association; it has not become domesticated. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife also notes that squirrels typically avoid people unless people feed them. That distinction matters: changing a wild animal’s behavior around humans can increase conflict rather than create a dependable companion.

CDC guidance is direct: its Small Mammals page advises against keeping squirrels and other rodents as pets. The recommendation applies to the ordinary household decision, not to the work of licensed wildlife rehabilitators caring for animals temporarily under authorization.

The apparent pros are mostly reasons people feel attracted to squirrels

Squirrels are lively, intelligent-looking and familiar. Watching one climb, leap and search for food can be delightful, and someone who rescues a very young animal may quickly become attached. Those are understandable emotional appeals, but they are not evidence that a squirrel can thrive as a companion animal.

  • They are fascinating to observe. Their movement and problem-solving behavior can make backyard viewing rewarding when the animal is left wild.
  • A baby may seem unusually friendly. A juvenile that is cold, weak or separated from its mother may be quiet or willing to accept warmth and handling. That temporary condition should not be mistaken for a pet temperament.
  • They are familiar wildlife. Because squirrels live near homes, people may assume they are easy to care for. Familiarity does not remove their wild needs, legal protections or safety concerns.

These points support respectful observation, not ownership. The meaningful decision factors are the animal’s wild status, its behavior as it matures, the risks to people and property, and whether local law permits captivity.

The cons that make squirrel ownership unsuitable

Wild behavior changes as the animal matures

A young squirrel can appear manageable because it has not yet developed the strength, speed and independence of an adult. Ohio’s wildlife agency cautions that adults are active and independent and may become dangerous and destructive. In a home, that can mean persistent climbing, chewing, escape attempts and defensive behavior when the animal is frightened or restrained. A calm juvenile is not a reliable forecast of adult behavior.

Even a squirrel that has lived around people still has wild responses. Noise, unfamiliar handling, pain, territorial pressure or attempts to confine it can trigger a bite, scratch or frantic escape. The issue is not that every squirrel will attack; it is that ordinary pet expectations—handling on demand, predictable behavior and safe access for children or other animals—do not match a wild species.

Property damage and household conflict are realistic concerns

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife identifies property damage as one of the human-wildlife conflicts associated with squirrels. Their natural activities involve climbing, gnawing, digging and searching widely for food. Indoors, those behaviors can damage structures and belongings or create routes into inaccessible spaces. Outdoors, feeding can draw squirrels toward buildings and intensify conflicts around gardens, roofs, attics, trash and pet food.

Keeping a squirrel confined does not eliminate these behaviors. A cage or room can limit movement while leaving the animal frustrated and physically under-stimulated. Expanding the enclosure to meet a wild squirrel’s activity needs is not a practical substitute for the range and choices available in the wild.

Health risks exist even when an animal looks healthy

CDC’s Wildlife guidance warns, “Even animals that look and act healthy can carry germs that can make people sick.” That is a general wildlife precaution, not a claim that every squirrel is diseased. California’s wildlife agency likewise lists possible human health and safety concerns associated with squirrels.

Handling, bites, scratches, saliva, urine, feces and contaminated surfaces can all create exposure routes. Children, older adults and people with weakened immune systems may need particular caution around wildlife. A household cannot reliably determine an individual squirrel’s health status by appearance, and a regular companion-animal veterinarian may not be equipped or legally permitted to treat a wild squirrel.

Wild diets do not translate into a simple pet-feeding plan

California’s agency lists seeds, plants, eggs and insects among squirrel foods and notes that squirrels may also eat pet food, animal feed or trash. This describes opportunistic wild feeding, not a balanced captive diet. Nutritional needs vary with species, age and condition, and a diet that seems harmless can cause deficiencies or illness.

CDC specifically cautions that inappropriate food or medicine can harm wildlife. Do not try to solve the pet-suitability problem with a generic “squirrel food,” supplements, human medicine or a household feeding schedule. Feeding can also make a squirrel less wary of people and increase the chance of conflict.

Legal and veterinary limits vary by location

There is no single nationwide rule that makes squirrel ownership legal or illegal everywhere. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources states that raising wild animals in captivity is illegal in Ohio without a state permit. That is an Ohio-specific example, not a conclusion about every state, country or squirrel species.

Before possessing any wild squirrel, check the current rules with your state, provincial or regional wildlife agency. Ask about the species, permits, transport, possession, release and rehabilitation requirements. Also confirm whether a veterinarian with relevant wildlife experience is available; finding routine pet care after taking an animal home is not a substitute for legal authorization.

Pros and cons at a glance

Factor Why a person may see an advantage What the official guidance means for ownership
Appearance and activity Squirrels are lively and interesting to watch. Observation appeal does not make a wild animal domesticated or predictable.
Early friendliness A juvenile may accept help or handling. Young behavior can change as the squirrel becomes active and independent.
Behavior Curiosity can look entertaining. Ohio warns that adult squirrels may be dangerous and destructive.
Health There is no reliable household test showing an animal is safe. CDC says healthy-looking wildlife can carry germs; California notes health and safety concerns.
Feeding People may enjoy offering food. CDC advises not to pet or feed wildlife and warns inappropriate food or medicine can harm it.
Property Outdoor visitors can be enjoyable to observe. California identifies property damage as a possible conflict, especially when wildlife is drawn toward homes.
Law and care Rules may appear straightforward until a specific species and location are checked. Requirements differ by jurisdiction; Ohio requires a permit to raise wild animals in captivity.

What to do if you find a baby squirrel

Finding a small squirrel creates a rescue question, not a pet opportunity. A mother may leave young alone while she searches for food, so a baby seen by itself is not automatically abandoned.

  1. Observe from a distance. Keep children, dogs, cats and other people away. Avoid picking up the squirrel simply because it is visible or quiet.
  2. Look for signs that it needs professional help. Ohio guidance identifies a squirrel that is sick, cold, weak or injured as needing assistance. A known dead mother or a mother that has not returned for more than a day is also a reason to contact a rehabilitator.
  3. Call a licensed wildlife rehabilitator or local wildlife authority. Explain where the animal is, what you observed and whether it has visible injuries. Follow the local professional’s instructions for any handling or transport.
  4. Do not feed or medicate it on your own. CDC warns that inappropriate food or medicine can harm wildlife. A well-intentioned intervention can make the animal’s condition worse.
  5. Keep the situation temporary and authorized. Do not decide to raise the squirrel at home while waiting for advice. Wildlife rehabilitation and possession rules are location-specific, and the goal is appropriate professional care and, when possible, return to the wild.

Local instructions take priority because species, weather, predators and legal requirements differ. If you cannot immediately reach a rehabilitator, contact the relevant government wildlife agency for the approved next step rather than improvising a diet or enclosure.

How to avoid creating a squirrel conflict

Do not pet or feed wild squirrels. CDC recommends avoiding those interactions, and California notes that squirrels generally avoid people unless fed. Secure household food and trash, keep pet food indoors, and observe wildlife without trying to make it approach. These measures reduce the incentive for squirrels to enter buildings or lose their natural wariness.

If squirrels are already visiting because someone has been feeding them, stop the feeding and ask the local wildlife agency about lawful conflict-prevention measures. Do not trap, relocate or poison an animal without checking local rules and professional guidance; the applicable methods and permits depend on the jurisdiction and species.

A practical decision checklist

If you are considering a squirrel as a pet, the answer is no when any of these expectations matter to you:

  • You want a domesticated animal whose adult temperament is suited to routine household handling.
  • You need predictable behavior around children, guests or other pets.
  • You expect ordinary pet-food instructions and convenient veterinary care.
  • You cannot verify current wildlife-possession rules and obtain any required permit.
  • You are unwilling or unable to manage possible property damage and escape behavior.
  • You found a baby squirrel and are hoping to keep it instead of contacting a licensed rehabilitator.

The humane alternative is to appreciate squirrels as wildlife, prevent food-based habituation and refer injured or apparently orphaned animals to qualified professionals. That approach protects the animal, your household and the wider community without treating a temporary rescue situation as permission to own a wild pet.
