Are Tennis Balls Safe for Dogs? Choking, Dental, and Ingestion Risks

Supervised fetch may be appropriate, but tennis balls are unsafe as unsupervised chew toys for dogs that bite, shred, or swallow pieces. Learn how to size, inspect and replace them, plus what to do after choking or ingestion.

Tennis balls are acceptable for supervised fetch, but they are not risk-free and are a poor unsupervised chew toy for dogs that bite, shred, or swallow pieces. A damaged ball or a ball that is too small can obstruct the throat; torn felt or rubber can be swallowed and cause an intestinal blockage; and persistent chewing on dirty, abrasive felt can gradually wear tooth surfaces.

The safest approach is to match the toy to your dog’s behavior and mouth size, watch every session, remove the ball at the first sign of damage, and contact a veterinarian promptly after suspected ingestion or a choking event.

When a tennis ball is a reasonable choice

Risk depends more on what your dog does with the ball than on the word tennis on its label. A dog that runs after a ball, picks it up, returns it and releases it has a different risk profile from a dog that pins the ball between its paws and grinds it with the back teeth. The American Kennel Club (AKC) recommends supervised use and specifically warns that dogs who chew tennis balls face greater choking and dental-wear risk.

Supervised fetch can be a practical activity when all of these conditions are met:

  • Your dog retrieves and releases rather than persistently chewing.
  • The ball is large enough that it cannot fit entirely in the mouth.
  • You can watch continuously and take it away immediately if the surface splits or pieces begin to shed.
  • The ball is used alone, not carried together with another ball.

These conditions reduce risk; they do not make any toy completely safe. VCA Animal Hospitals notes that dogs differ widely in destructive chewing and that even recommended toys require supervision.

The hazards to understand before play

Choking from a whole ball or a broken piece

A strong-jawed dog can puncture or split a tennis ball. A loose piece, a half-ball, or the entire ball can lodge at the back of the throat. A ball that is undersized for the dog is especially dangerous because it may be swallowed rather than retrieved. AKC’s toy-shopping guidance and VCA’s chew-toy guidance both say a fetch toy should not fit entirely inside the dog’s mouth.

Allowing a dog to collect several balls adds another route to trouble. AKC cautions that a dog picking up more than one ball can lodge a ball dangerously, even if each ball seemed appropriately sized when used by itself. Offer one ball at a time and remove extras from the play area.

Swallowed felt or rubber and intestinal blockage

Chewing can tear off the fuzzy covering or chunks of the rubber core. AKC identifies swallowed felt as a potential choking or intestinal-blockage hazard. PetMD’s guidance on foreign-object ingestion also lists toys, including tennis balls and rope toys, among objects that can obstruct the digestive tract. A swallowed piece does not always cause an obstruction, but you cannot determine the outcome reliably by watching at home.

Call a veterinarian promptly if you know or suspect that your dog swallowed any part of a ball, even if the dog appears normal. The appropriate response depends on what was swallowed, its size and shape, when it was swallowed, and the dog’s symptoms. Do not induce vomiting unless a veterinarian specifically directs you to do so; some objects cause more damage on the way back up.

Abrasive felt and gradual tooth wear

The felt on a tennis ball can act like an abrasive surface. Dirt and sand caught in the fibers make it rougher, and persistent chewing can gradually blunt tooth surfaces. AKC discusses this concern with veterinary dental guidance, while VCA describes the risk as behavior-dependent: occasional chewing may be acceptable for some dogs, but obsessive chewing on a scratchy surface can wear teeth over time.

This is not a claim that one brief game of fetch will damage every dog’s teeth. The concern is cumulative contact, especially when a dog repeatedly crushes the same dirty ball. A ball marketed for dogs is not automatically gentle on enamel; AKC’s toy guide includes dog-specific tennis balls among toys that can abrade teeth or be popped and swallowed.

Fetch versus chewing: a practical risk comparison

What your dog does Main concern Safer management
Runs after the ball, returns it and drops it Damage that goes unnoticed, an undersized ball, or accidental swallowing Use a correctly sized ball, supervise every throw, inspect it between sessions, and retire it at the first split or tear.
Carries the ball but repeatedly mouths or compresses it Felt and rubber may loosen; choking and ingestion risk rises Shorten sessions, teach a reliable drop-it cue, and replace the ball with a durable rubber fetch toy if chewing continues.
Pins, shreds or pops tennis balls Large fragments or a half-ball can obstruct the throat; swallowed pieces may block the intestine; abrasive chewing can wear teeth Do not offer tennis balls as chew toys. Choose a larger, durable rubber ball and supervise that toy as well.
Attempts to carry multiple balls A ball can lodge in the throat when another is already in the mouth Keep one ball available and remove all others from the area.

How to choose and prepare a safer ball

Match the size to the mouth, not the dog’s weight label

The ball should be too large to pass entirely into your dog’s mouth. Consider the dog’s actual jaw shape and ability to compress the ball, not just the package’s breed category. If you can imagine the dog swallowing the ball, choose a larger diameter or a different design. Recheck size if the dog’s chewing has changed or if a previously firm ball has softened.

Assess durability against your dog’s bite

Durability is relative. A ball that survives a retriever’s gentle pickup may fail quickly with a dog that uses the molars to puncture it. Examine the surface and seams before every session. A split, puncture, deep crack, missing felt patch, or exposed rubber is a reason to discard the ball rather than trim it and put it back into use; trimming can leave a smaller piece that is easier to swallow.

Keep grit off the surface

Sand and dirt lodged in the felt increase abrasion. Use the ball on a clean surface when possible, and rinse and dry it according to the material’s care instructions. Cleaning does not restore a damaged ball or eliminate the need for inspection.

A supervised tennis-ball routine

  1. Inspect before opening the gate. Look for splits, punctures, loose felt, exposed rubber and changes in shape. Discard any damaged ball.
  2. Set up one ball. Remove spare balls, fragments and other objects from the play area so your dog cannot collect several at once.
  3. Check the fit. Use a ball that cannot fit entirely in the dog’s mouth. If you are uncertain, choose a larger fetch ball.
  4. Keep the session interactive. Throw, call the dog back and exchange the ball rather than allowing a long period of solitary chewing.
  5. Use a drop-it cue. Practice the cue with rewards when the dog is calm, then use it during play so you can retrieve the ball quickly.
  6. Interrupt chewing immediately. If your dog settles down to grind, puncture or shred the ball, trade for a reward and remove the ball.
  7. Inspect again after play. A ball can be damaged during one throw. Retire it if any piece is missing or the surface has opened.

What to do if your dog swallowed part of a ball

Treat suspected ingestion as a veterinary question, not a wait-and-see experiment. PetMD’s foreign-object guidance, updated December 13, 2025, advises contacting a veterinarian promptly when a dog may have swallowed an object. A dog can look comfortable before an obstruction develops.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Take away the remaining toy. Keep the ball and any fragments so the veterinarian can identify the material and estimate how much may be missing.
  2. Call your veterinarian or an emergency clinic. Tell them the dog’s size, the material swallowed, the estimated amount, and when it happened. Report any vomiting, gagging, drooling, abdominal pain, lethargy, loss of appetite or difficulty passing stool.
  3. Follow the clinician’s instructions exactly. Do not induce vomiting at home unless a veterinarian specifically tells you to. Do not give food, oil or other home remedies to push the object through.
  4. Monitor only as directed. If the clinic advises observation, ask what symptoms require an immediate return and how to contact the clinic after hours.

Even a small felt strip can become a problem depending on its shape and the dog’s anatomy. Conversely, not every swallowed fragment causes a blockage, so avoid making your own prediction from the dog’s current behavior.

If a ball or fragment is stuck in the throat

Choking is an emergency. If your dog is struggling to breathe, making frantic respiratory movements, collapsing, or has a visible object lodged deep in the throat, seek immediate veterinary care. PetMD advises against attempting to pull out an object that is lodged deeply; pushing it farther down or tearing tissue can worsen the injury. Call the emergency clinic while traveling so the team can prepare.

If the dog has stopped choking but swallowed a piece, still contact a veterinarian promptly. A resolved gagging episode does not rule out a remaining fragment or later intestinal obstruction.

When a durable rubber fetch toy is a better fit

For a dog that repeatedly pops or shreds tennis balls, a durable rubber fetch ball is a more appropriate category to try. The advantage is not that rubber is risk-free; it is that a properly sized, well-made rubber ball may tolerate the dog’s bite better and provide a surface without the tennis-ball felt. VCA warns that destructive chewers can tear apart rubber toys too, so supervision and inspection continue.

Selection question What to look for Why it matters
Can the dog swallow it? A diameter that cannot fit entirely in the mouth, with no detachable parts Reduces the chance of whole-toy choking or ingestion.
Will it withstand the bite? Construction intended for fetch and a firmness appropriate to the dog’s chewing strength Slows puncturing and fragment production; no material is indestructible.
Can you inspect it? A simple shape and visible surface without hidden seams or loose coverings Makes cracks, gouges and missing pieces easier to find.
Will the dog use it for fetch? A shape the dog can carry without compressing continuously Encourages retrieving rather than prolonged destructive chewing.

Introduce the replacement during a supervised session. Remove it at the first sign of tearing, and do not assume a new material eliminates choking, ingestion or dental risks.

Puppies and persistent chewers need closer supervision

Young dogs and determined chewers may investigate toys with their teeth for long periods. VCA’s puppy-care guidance emphasizes that no toy is 100% safe and that puppies should be supervised even when using recommended toys. The same principle applies to an adult dog that has learned to dismantle tennis balls: a toy suitable for a gentle retriever is not suitable for a dog that seeks out seams and soft spots.

Use short, observed play periods, trade rather than chase when taking a toy away, and keep damaged toys out of reach after the session. If your dog repeatedly swallows non-food objects, discuss the behavior with your veterinarian so medical and behavioral causes can be considered.

Bottom line for dog owners

A tennis ball can be an acceptable supervised fetch toy for a dog that retrieves and releases it, provided the ball is too large to swallow and is inspected before and after every use. It is a poor choice for unsupervised chewing, dogs that pop or shred balls, and any situation in which the dog carries multiple balls. Remove damaged toys, switch persistent chewers to a correctly sized durable rubber fetch ball, and call a veterinarian promptly after suspected ingestion or choking.
