No reliable evidence establishes an overall ranking of the smartest cat breeds by adaptability or problem-solving. A cat’s performance depends on the particular task, and on factors such as experience, motivation, age, and willingness to engage. Breed studies can identify reported behavioral differences, but those are not the same as a measure of intelligence.
What does “smart” mean in a cat?
Feline intelligence is not a single ability measured by one test. Cognition includes memory, learning, concept formation, and reasoning, including problem-solving. As Dr. Mikel Maria Delgado explains in the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior’s discussion of cat problem-solving, “This does not, however, mean that any one aspect of cognition is a good measure of intelligence, because again, every species has an area of specialty.” A result on one puzzle can show how a cat handled that puzzle; it cannot, by itself, establish how intelligent the cat is overall.

What a food-puzzle study found
In a 2024 study, the authors tested 86 domestic cats on a food-acquisition puzzle box that required manipulating a tab to get food. Twenty-four cats solved it. More socialized cats were more likely to succeed and solved the task faster; younger adult cats were also more likely to succeed than older adults. These findings describe performance on one task in that sample, not a universal measure of intelligence or a ranking of breeds. Read the study, “Effects of Socialization on Problem Solving in Domestic Cats”.

The study links socialization scores with task outcomes, but it does not establish why every individual cat did or did not solve the puzzle. Not solving it is not proof of low intelligence.

What breed research can—and cannot—tell you
A 2019 study compared questionnaire-reported behavioral traits in 5,726 home-living cats across 40 breeds. That is evidence that reported behavior can vary among breeds; it is not a comprehensive test of cognition and does not rank breeds by intelligence, adaptability, or problem-solving. See “Breed differences of heritable behaviour traits in cats”.
For that reason, claims that a particular breed is objectively “the smartest” or “the most adaptable” go beyond what these findings establish. A useful breed comparison needs a defined behavior and evidence for that specific comparison—not a vague composite label. Even a reported tendency cannot tell you exactly how an individual cat will behave in a new home or with a new challenge.

How to recognize problem-solving in your own cat
Watch what your cat does across familiar, low-pressure situations rather than treating one puzzle as an intelligence test. Useful observations include whether the cat learns a routine, remembers where a resource is, explores a safe object, or changes approach when an easy challenge does not work. These are examples of behaviors relevant to cognition, not a validated score or breed assessment.

- Give the cat time to approach and investigate; willingness to participate affects what you can observe.
- Notice learning and memory in ordinary routines, not just performance for food.
- Consider age, familiarity, motivation, and the specific task when interpreting a result.
- Let the cat stop or choose another activity. Avoid turning a puzzle into a pass-or-fail test.
Use enrichment to offer opportunities, not to raise an “IQ”
A cat food puzzle feeder can make mealtime an opportunity to work for food, but it is enrichment—not a proven way to increase intelligence. Veterinary literature discusses food puzzles as a way to support physical and emotional wellbeing, while noting that the evidence base was relatively new in its 2016 review. See “Food puzzles for cats: Feeding for physical and emotional wellbeing”.

Cornell’s Feline Health Center describes toys as supporting exercise, natural behaviors such as stalking and pouncing, and cognitive enrichment. Choose safe toys and activities that suit the cat’s response; individual cats differ in what they prefer. A formal study assessed cats’ choices across human interaction, food, toys, and scent, underscoring the value of observing the cat rather than assuming every enrichment option appeals equally. See Cornell’s guidance on safe toys and gifts and the study “Social interaction, food, scent or toys? A formal assessment of domestic pet and shelter cat preferences”.

There is no evidence-based smartest-breed list that combines adaptability and problem-solving. If these qualities matter to you, look at the individual cat’s behavior and history, and give it chances to learn and explore at its own pace. Breed-associated behavior findings may inform expectations, but they cannot substitute for observing the cat in front of you.
