How to Prevent Possum Problems Around Your Australian Home

To prevent possum problems, first confirm the animal and where it is getting in or feeding, then use physical barriers that keep wildlife safe. If a possum is in your roof, make sure it has left before sealing entry points. Trapping, release and removal rules vary by state, so check your state or territory wildlife authority before acting. The guidance below is for Australian homeowners and gardeners; local laws and approved methods differ.

Identify the animal and the damage first

Before choosing a fix, check whether the noise or damage is actually caused by a possum and identify the route or plants involved. South Australia’s Department for Environment and Water cautions that possum impacts can be confused with rats or mice. It notes that 23 possum species are known in Australia, but only two commonly cause impacts (South Australian Department for Environment and Water: Possums).

For roof noise, observe the building at dusk to see whether an animal leaves and where it travels. For garden damage, look for which plants are being browsed and whether the damage is limited to a tree, crop or a larger area. Identifying the animal and the problem spot helps you target the fix rather than blocking an exit or protecting the wrong plants.

How to remove a possum from your roof safely

In practice, a roof fix means giving the possum a safe way out, confirming it has left, and then closing the routes it used. Do not seal an occupied roof cavity: an animal trapped inside may be injured or die, and another possum may still find a different opening. NSW Environment and Heritage advises providing an alternative nest box and sealing entry only after the possum has moved out (NSW Environment and Heritage: How to remove a possum from your roof).

Burke's Possum Repellent Spray (16 oz)
  • DETERS POSSUMS – Designed to help discourage possum activity around gardens, landscapes, and outdoor living spaces.
  • FOR YARDS & LANDSCAPES – Apply around gardens, flower beds, lawns, and other outdoor areas
  • PET-FRIENDLY FORMULA — Made with plant-based active ingredients. Safe for use around pets when used as directed.
  • EASY SPRAY APPLICATION – Ready-to-use spray allows for quick treatment of problem areas.
  • MADE IN USA – Manufactured in the USA using quality ingredients.
  1. Watch the route at dusk. Confirm the animal is a possum and note how it accesses the roof. Check for other possible openings as well, including roof cavities, chimneys, drainpipes and gaps in the building envelope.
  2. Offer another den site. NSW recommends a possum nest box in a suitable garden tree at least 4 metres above ground as an alternative home. A box may encourage the animal to use another den, but it does not itself exclude possums from the roof.
  3. Wait until the possum is out. Do not block the opening until you have confirmed the animal has left. If you cannot verify that safely, contact a locally authorised wildlife professional.
  4. Close the access points. Once the possum has left, seal the opening it used and check for other ways in. Prune branches that give access to the roof where appropriate; Victorian guidance advises keeping access branches at least 1.5 metres from the roof.
  5. Check the local rules before trapping or release. Do not assume that catching, moving or releasing a possum is allowed in your state. If you need help, NSW advises using a currently licensed possum operator and checking the licence.

When a one-way flap may be considered

Victorian guidance describes a hinged one-way exit made from metal or Perspex, arranged so a possum can leave but cannot return. Metal around the flap can prevent claws gripping the surround. A one-way flap is not a substitute for checking whether the roof is occupied or following local advice: fitting it without those checks could trap an animal inside. See Victoria’s possum management methods.

How to stop possums eating your garden

For browsing damage, choose protection to match the area: cover favoured plants with suitable netting, protect a trunk with a collar, or use a barrier to keep possums away from a crop or group of trees. Wildlife agencies in NSW, Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania recommend physical measures, though the best fit depends on the plant and layout.

Measure Best fit Practical detail and limits
Wildlife-safe netting Favoured plants, fruit trees or crops that can be covered NSW and Victorian guidance recommends wildlife-safe netting; South Australia also recommends netting to restrict access to fruit trees and crops. Choose netting designed to reduce wildlife entanglement risk and install it securely. It protects only the area it covers.
Tree collar A vulnerable tree trunk that possums climb Victoria recommends a tree collar, and South Australia recommends collars or barriers for fruit trees and crops. Smooth sheet material can form a collar; fit it so the possum cannot climb around the edges. A collar protects the tree it surrounds, not nearby plants.
Floppy fence A garden area or planting bed needing a broader barrier Victorian guidance describes a fence using 80 cm-wide heavily galvanised chicken wire, with the bottom 20 cm buried and the upper section curving outward. Installation needs to suit the site and avoid creating hazards for wildlife.
Alternative planting and protective sprays Replanting or supplementing a garden where browsing is recurring Tasmania suggests less-palatable plants and physical protection for vulnerable trees. NSW recommends non-harmful protective sprays. These approaches may reduce damage, but should not be treated as a guaranteed fix for every possum or garden.

Victorian guidance says research found repellents and ultrasonic devices do little to deter brushtail possums. It also reports that tests of 15 common repellent compounds found none effectively prevented damage to ornamental trees or fruit. Treat such products as uncertain rather than relying on them in place of a physical barrier (Victoria’s possum management methods; Victoria’s Possums guidance).

Check your state’s rules before trapping or relocating

Possums are protected wildlife, but the rules for trapping, release and removal are not uniform across Australia. Check current advice from your state or territory wildlife regulator before handling an animal or installing a trap. For example, NSW says catching and releasing possums without a licence is illegal. Victoria describes a specific building-trapping exception with humane-trap and same-property release conditions. South Australia also describes permit constraints under its wildlife framework. These are jurisdiction-specific examples, not national permission to trap or move possums.

Relocation is not a reliable way to solve access to a roof or garden: it does not close the route that allowed the animal in, and the animal may face serious risks after release. Victoria’s Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action summarizes a Deakin University study by Pietsch (1994): remains of eight possums were found that were likely killed by foxes after release, and only two of 12 radio-collared possums were alive after 10 weeks. The department also reports that 68 per cent of dens used by relocated possums in the first week were on or under the ground. Its guidance states: “Clearly, relocation is not a humane way of managing possums.” (Victoria’s Possums guidance.)

When to get professional help

Contact your state or territory wildlife authority or a properly licensed local operator if you cannot confirm that a roof is empty, cannot safely seal the entry, or are unsure what trapping or release rules apply. Ask what licence or authorisation the operator holds and whether the proposed method complies with current local requirements. For garden browsing, choose a barrier that fits the specific plants and site rather than escalating to trapping or relocation.
