Scientists have recorded roughly eight genera and 52 species of flying fish. Surveys have also found them in large numbers, including tens of thousands of individual fish recorded during one NOAA observation effort and aggregations estimated at about 10,000 fish in parts of the Gulf of Mexico. Those figures are local survey results—not a worldwide population count—but they provide clear evidence that flying fish remain extant and can be locally abundant.

What is a flying fish?
“Flying fish” refers to members of the fish family Exocoetidae. They are open-ocean, surface-dwelling fish with streamlined bodies, large pectoral fins, and a deeply forked tail. Depending on the species, the pelvic fins may also be enlarged.

There are many different species rather than one single flying fish. For example, the California flyingfish has been recorded from Astoria, Oregon, south to Baja California, Mexico. Other flying fish, including species in the genus Exocoetus, live in tropical and subtropical waters across broad areas of the world’s oceans. A range reported for one species should not be treated as the range of the entire family.
Do flying fish actually fly?
Not in the same way birds, bats, or insects do. Flying fish do not flap their fins to produce continuous, powered flight. They accelerate underwater, launch out of the sea, and glide through the air using their enlarged fins.
The process usually works like this:
- Acceleration: The fish builds speed underwater, using its body and tail.
- Launch: It breaks through the surface. The lower lobe of its forked tail can help generate the final thrust needed to leave the water.
- Gliding: Once airborne, it spreads its large pectoral fins. These act broadly like wings or airfoils.
- Stabilization: In some species, enlarged pelvic fins add lift and help keep the fish stable while it is in the air.
- Relaunching: During a long glide, the lower tail lobe may dip back into the water. The fish can beat that part of its tail against the surface to regain speed and continue gliding.
For that reason, “gliding fish” is more technically accurate than “flying fish,” although the familiar name is well established.
How far can a flying fish glide?
Flying fish can remain above the surface during a sequence of glides, sometimes using their tail to push against the water again. However, the research summarized here does not support assigning one universal distance or flight time to every species. Performance varies with the fish’s size, species, launch speed, wind, waves, and whether it can relaunch from the surface.
The important point is that the behavior is a coordinated transition between two environments: the fish uses swimming power to launch, aerodynamic fins to glide, and sometimes its tail to regain thrust.

Why do flying fish leave the water?
The leading explanation is predator escape. Flying fish live close to the ocean surface, where they can be pursued by fast pelagic predators below them. Leaving the water may carry the fish outside the predator’s immediate underwater pursuit path.
Predator avoidance is the main ecological explanation, but it is safest not to describe it as the only possible purpose of every glide. Surface movement, feeding ecology, and the physical advantages of traveling near the air-water boundary may also influence the behavior. A particular flying fish may be escaping a predator, moving through its habitat, or responding to several pressures at once.

Flying fish are primarily epipelagic animals. That means they occupy the sunlit, upper layer of the ocean rather than living on the seafloor or in deep water.
As a family, they are associated mainly with warm surface waters of:
- the Atlantic Ocean;
- the Indian Ocean; and
- the Pacific Ocean.
They are generally found offshore, although individual species can have more limited coastal or regional ranges. NOAA survey material, for instance, describes California flyingfish near the surface from the northeastern Pacific to southern Baja California. In the Gulf of Mexico, researchers have documented large aggregations and identified at least three species: Hirundichthys rondeletii, Cheilopogon melanurus, and Prognichthys occidentalis.

How do we know flying fish still exist?
Modern biological records and direct observations provide strong evidence. NOAA reference material describes living flying fish in warm offshore waters, and survey researchers have observed them directly rather than relying on old museum specimens or historical reports.
One NOAA technical report recorded 38,016 flying fish during its observation effort. Another study in the Gulf of Mexico reported substantial aggregations, with average aggregations estimated at roughly 10,000 individuals. These observations show that flying fish are living animals and can be numerous in particular places and seasons.
They do not establish a global population total. Flying fish are highly mobile, associated with the ocean surface, and difficult to survey consistently. Counts can vary with weather, season, location, sampling method, and the species being studied.
Are flying fish endangered?
There is no single, responsible “yes” or “no” answer for all flying fish. The family contains many species with different geographic ranges, levels of scientific knowledge, and interactions with fisheries.
The available evidence shows that flying fish are alive and can be locally abundant, but it does not prove that every species or population is secure. It is equally inaccurate to declare the whole family endangered without naming a species and assessment authority, or to say that all flying fish are completely safe.

A meaningful conservation answer would need to specify:
- the exact species;
- the geographic population or region;
- the date of the assessment;
- the relevant threats, such as fishing pressure or habitat and ocean changes; and
- the conservation authority making the assessment.
Even the NOAA survey literature notes that flying-fish abundance, distribution, and ecology are only partly understood. Their mobility and surface-associated lifestyle make reliable population monitoring challenging.
Are flying fish suitable as pets?
No. Flying fish are wild, open-ocean marine animals—not aquarium pets. They need the space, water movement, temperature, oxygen conditions, and food supply of the pelagic ocean. Their gliding behavior also requires a surface launch and open airspace, which ordinary home aquariums cannot provide.
If you see a fish leap from the water in a home aquarium, pond, lake, or stream, it is almost certainly not a flying fish. Many fish jump, but jumping is different from the specialized launch-and-glide behavior of Exocoetidae.

Several animals are easily confused with flying fish because of their names or unusual fins:
| Animal | How it differs |
|---|---|
| Flying gurnard | A different kind of marine fish. It spreads ornate fins underwater but is not a member of Exocoetidae and does not perform the same surface glides. |
| Freshwater jumping fish | Some fish leap from rivers, lakes, or ponds, but a jump is not the sustained launch-and-glide behavior of a flying fish. |
| Fossil or extinct fish with wing-like fins | Fossil animals may resemble flying fish, but living Exocoetidae are documented in modern oceans. |
| Flying foxes and flying squirrels | These are mammals whose common names refer to flight or gliding; they are unrelated to flying fish. |
Bottom line
Flying fish are still alive, widespread in warm ocean surface waters, and observed by modern researchers. They do not flap through the air like birds. Instead, they launch by swimming rapidly, glide on enlarged fins, and may use their lower tail lobe to push against the water and extend the trip. Their gliding is best understood as an important predator-escape behavior, while the conservation status of individual species requires separate, current assessment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are flying fish extinct?
Yes. Flying fish are living marine fishes in the family Exocoetidae, found mainly in warm surface waters of the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans.
How do flying fish fly?
They accelerate underwater, launch through the surface, and glide on enlarged pectoral fins. Some species also use enlarged pelvic fins for lift and stability, while the lower tail lobe may provide extra thrust during a relaunch.
Why do flying fish fly?
The leading explanation is predator escape: leaving the water can help them avoid fast predators below. Gliding may also support movement and reflect the physical advantages of traveling near the ocean surface.
Can flying fish be pets?
No. Flying fish are wild, open-ocean animals and are not suitable for home aquariums. Their specialized habitat and launch-and-glide behavior cannot be replicated in an ordinary fish tank.
The Bottom Line
Yes. Flying fish are living marine fish in the family Exocoetidae. They launch from warm ocean surface waters and glide using enlarged fins; they do not achieve bird-like powered flight. Modern surveys have recorded them in large numbers, although that does not establish that every species or population is secure.
