The ASPCA classifies the Venus flytrap (Dionaea muscipula) as non-toxic to cats. That does not mean eating it is risk-free: plant material can still cause vomiting or gastrointestinal upset. If your cat is unwell, may have eaten a poisonous plant, or you are unsure what it ate, contact a veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center.
Is a Venus flytrap poisonous to cats?
No. The ASPCA’s species-specific listing identifies the Venus Fly Trap as Dionaea muscipula and classifies it as non-toxic to cats. See the ASPCA Venus Fly Trap entry.

That classification applies to the named species, not automatically to other plants that resemble it or are sold under a similar common name. If you cannot confidently identify the plant, do not assume the same toxicity classification applies.
What if my cat eats part of one?
“Non-toxic” does not mean suitable to eat. The ASPCA cautions that consuming any plant material may cause vomiting and gastrointestinal upset in cats. A cat may therefore feel unwell after chewing a Venus flytrap even though the ASPCA does not classify this species as toxic to cats.

The ASPCA says its plant list is not all-inclusive. If your cat develops symptoms, you suspect it ate a poisonous plant, or you are uncertain what it swallowed, contact a veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435. Follow professional guidance rather than trying an unsupported home treatment.
Can the closing trap hurt a cat?
The ASPCA listing addresses toxicity; it does not establish whether the flytrap’s moving trap can or cannot physically injure a cat. Avoid treating the non-toxic classification as proof that the plant’s movement is harmless.

How to use the ASPCA listing
- Check the plant identity. The entry applies to Venus Fly Trap, Dionaea muscipula; do not extend it to an unidentified lookalike.
- Separate toxicity from stomach upset. Non-toxic means the species is not classified as toxic to cats in this listing, but eating plant material may still cause vomiting or gastrointestinal upset.
- Get help when there is a concern. Contact your veterinarian or ASPCA Animal Poison Control if your cat is ill, may have ingested a poisonous plant, or the plant identity is uncertain.
