A cat’s paw-pad wound can heal, but a lost or badly damaged pad is not guaranteed to grow back as a normal, intact pad. Healing may close the wound and form new tissue without restoring the pad’s original specialized, weight-bearing surface. Because walking can reopen a torn pad, have a veterinarian assess deep, discolored, or worsening injuries.
What happens when a cat’s paw pad is injured?
A superficial scrape and a deep tear or loss of pad tissue are different injuries. The depth, contamination, tissue condition, and your cat’s overall health all affect treatment and recovery. A veterinarian may recommend wound cleaning, bandaging, allowing a wound to heal open, or surgery in selected cases; the appropriate approach depends on an examination. Merck Veterinary Manual’s wound-management guidance, updated in December 2025, describes these options generally and does not establish a cat paw-pad regrowth rate.

Why can a torn paw pad take time to heal?
Foot pads bear weight, so ordinary walking can put pressure on an injury and cause it to reopen. VCA Animal Hospitals explains that torn pads are difficult to close with stitches and may be slow to heal when walking disrupts the wound. A persistent or worsening tear should be assessed by a veterinarian rather than treated as a simple scrape.
How long does a cat paw-pad injury take to heal?
Catster gives a broad estimate of 10–14 days for many foot-pad injuries, but this is general guidance, not a guaranteed recovery time or a result from a clinical trial. More severe injuries, including burns, may need months of care. The actual timeline depends on the injury and how it responds to treatment.

What should you do if your cat injures a paw pad?
Use gentle first aid while arranging care
- If the wound is bleeding, hold a clean towel against it and apply steady pressure.
- For accessible dirt, gently clean the area. Do not dig out debris that is deeply embedded; leave that to a veterinarian.
- If you need to protect the paw temporarily, non-adherent gauze can cushion the wound. Any bandage must not be tight, and your veterinarian’s instructions take priority. Bandaging is not appropriate for every injury.
- Contact a veterinary clinic for advice about the wound, especially if it is deep, contaminated, or getting worse.
VCA’s guidance for a burned foot pad says, “Daily bandage changes and close monitoring of the injury are important.” That advice is specific to its burn-bandaging guidance, not a universal instruction to bandage every paw wound at home. A non-adherent gauze pad is a supply, not a treatment or a substitute for veterinary assessment.
When should you contact a veterinarian urgently?
- Bleeding that will not stop: VCA advises emergency veterinary care if bleeding continues after 10–15 minutes of pressure.
- Discoloration or exposed tissue: Contact a veterinarian if the pad is discolored or tissue beneath it is exposed.
- Worsening injury or significant concern: Seek veterinary advice for a wound that is getting worse, substantial pain, persistent limping, or concern that the injury is deep. The right urgency depends on the individual injury.
What recovery depends on
Wound care is not one-size-fits-all. A veterinarian considers the injury’s depth and cleanliness, the condition of the tissue, and the cat’s health before choosing care. General wound-management guidance includes irrigation, bandaging, open healing, and surgery in selected cases; it is not a diagnosis or a home-treatment plan for an individual cat.
