You may be a cat person if you enjoy a cat’s company on its terms, notice tiny changes in its behavior, and make time for connection without expecting a performance in return. There is no scientifically validated 13-point test—and you do not need to own a cat or dislike dogs. “Cat person” is a flexible self-description for the kind of companionship you naturally value.
What “cat person” actually means
In ordinary conversation, a cat person is someone who identifies with cats or prefers the style of companionship they often offer: proximity without constant attention, affection that can be subtle, and a relationship built on reading individual signals. It is an identity or preference, not a diagnosis, fixed personality type, or pass–fail quiz.

Gallup once posed the choice directly: “If you had to choose — which would you say you are — more of a dog person or more of a cat person?” (Gallup). You can answer “both,” “neither,” or “it depends on the animal” and still recognize yourself in the signs below.

13 signs you might be a cat person
1. You enjoy a cat simply being nearby
A cat sleeping at the other end of the sofa, perched on a windowsill, or following you from room to room can feel like excellent company even when nothing dramatic is happening. You do not need continuous interaction to feel connected. Shared space itself is rewarding.
2. You read small changes in mood and routine
You notice when a normally social cat chooses a quieter spot, when its ears or tail signal overstimulation, or when it greets you earlier than usual. Paying attention to these small shifts helps you respond before a cat has to escalate its communication. Observation is more useful than assuming every purr, swat, or hiding episode means the same thing.
3. You make room for play and quiet companionship
Your schedule includes a few minutes for a chase game, a puzzle, grooming, or calm time together. You understand that interaction can be active or passive. A 2024 exploratory study examined self-identified cat or dog preference alongside pet care and both active and passive time spent with animals; it supports discussing daily interaction, but it did not establish a required amount of play or a universal “cat-person” behavior (Animals study via PubMed Central).
If a cat enjoys a wand-style game, the point is the responsive play—not buying a particular product. Follow the cat’s energy, stop before frustration, and offer rest afterward.

4. You photograph and tell stories about cats
You save a picture of a dramatic yawn, a neatly folded paw, or an unexpectedly brave moment. You may send friends a story about a cat’s routine with the same enthusiasm other people reserve for major events. Sharing is a way of appreciating the individual animal, not proof that you must fit a “crazy cat person” caricature.
5. You accept affection on the cat’s timetable
You can enjoy a greeting at the door without demanding a cuddle, and you do not take it personally when a cat moves away. You wait for an invitation, offer a hand to sniff, and respect a change of mind. This patience is especially important because a cat’s tolerance can vary with pain, stress, temperature, noise, and the particular person involved.
6. You care about the individual cat, not a species stereotype
You expect variation. One cat may be outgoing and another cautious; one may love laps while another prefers a nearby chair. You adjust enrichment, handling, and household routines to the animal in front of you instead of insisting that all cats are aloof, independent, or identical.
7. You find feline communication fascinating
You pay attention to body position, whisker direction, blinking, vocalization, scent-marking, and where a cat chooses to settle. You learn that a relaxed body and slow blink communicate something different from a stiff posture or rapidly lashing tail. Curiosity about these signals makes it easier to build trust and avoid unwanted handling.

8. You value consent and predictable boundaries
You let a cat approach rather than cornering it, provide a retreat, and keep children or visitors from chasing it. You recognize that “no” can look like a turned head, tense muscles, a low growl, or simply leaving. A cat person treats boundaries as information, not misbehavior.
9. You design your home around feline needs
You notice whether food, water, litter boxes, resting places, scratching surfaces, and elevated perches are easy to access and separated in ways that reduce stress. You secure hazards, check window screens, and create a quiet option when guests arrive. This is practical care, not indulgence: a cat cannot choose a safer layout for itself.
10. You can appreciate a cat you do not own
You may enjoy visiting a friend’s cat, volunteering at a shelter, or watching neighborhood cats from a respectful distance. Ownership is not a requirement for an affinity. If you do not currently have the time, housing permission, finances, or health circumstances for a pet, admiration can remain admiration.
11. You are willing to earn trust slowly
You understand that a newly adopted, formerly neglected, or naturally cautious cat may need days or months to feel secure. You keep routines steady, use rewards thoughtfully, and measure progress in small steps such as staying in the room or accepting a gentle touch. Patience matters more than forcing a breakthrough.

12. You can love cats and dogs
Many people prefer both. You might enjoy a dog’s overt enthusiasm and a cat’s quieter signals, or simply love particular individuals regardless of species. A preference for cats does not require hostility toward dogs, and liking dogs does not disqualify you from being a cat person.
13. You advocate for the cat’s welfare, not just its cuteness
You care about preventive veterinary visits, appropriate nutrition, parasite control, dental health, safe transport, identification, and humane handling. You also recognize when a behavior change warrants veterinary advice instead of labeling the cat “difficult.” Affection becomes meaningful when it includes responsibility.

Researchers generally measure “cat person” as a self-reported preference or identity, then examine how it relates to attachment, care, or interactions. They are not validating a 13-sign checklist.
| Evidence | What was studied | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| 2015 companion-animal caregiver study | Surveys from 1,098 guardians; identifying as a Cat Person, Dog Person, Both, or Neither was examined alongside attachment and personality measures. | Self-identification helped predict affection for a pet in that sample, alongside personality factors. The label does not determine anyone’s personality or behavior. |
| 2024 exploratory study | Self-identified cat or dog preference, pet care, and active or passive time with pets. | It provides a reason to discuss everyday interaction, but it does not prescribe a sign, schedule, or product. |
| 2022 cat-personality study | Owner and domestic-cat demographics in relation to reported cat personality traits. | Owner animal preference and housing type affected some cat-trait scores; several other demographics did not. These are findings about cats’ reported traits, not a human cat-person test. |
| 2020 sponsor-reported survey | A Cat Person brand survey of 1,000 cat owners. | It reported that 80% felt they lived in a dog-centric culture and 81% did not identify with the stereotype of cat owners. Those figures describe that survey, not the general population. |
The 2015 findings appear in the Journal of Applied Animal Welfare Science abstract. The 2022 study’s respondent pool included 336 female, 52 male, and five undisclosed or “prefer not to answer” owners, so its demographic profile was strongly female-skewed (Applied Animal Behaviour Science). Neither study supports claims that cat people are inherently introverted, aloof, more intelligent, or more independent.

A more useful way to score yourself
Do not total the 13 signs as if they were a clinical instrument. Instead, use them as prompts about your preferred relationship style.
- Circle the moments that feel natural. Mark the signs you already experience, whether with a household pet, a family member’s cat, or cats you meet elsewhere.
- Separate access from affinity. If you rent, travel, have allergies, or cannot afford veterinary care, an absent cat does not mean an absent preference.
- Look for patterns, not a magic number. Enjoying quiet proximity and respecting boundaries may matter more to your self-description than liking every cat-related activity.
- Check your expectations. If you want one predictable personality, remember that individual cats differ. Choose relationships and care plans around the actual animal.
- Use behavior changes as health information. A sudden withdrawal, appetite change, aggression, or litter-box change deserves attention and possibly veterinary guidance; it is not evidence that the cat has stopped loving you.
Cat person, dog person, both, or neither?
Choose “cat person” if the style fits
You are likely comfortable with indirect communication, flexible affection, and companionship that includes plenty of parallel time. You enjoy learning one animal’s preferences instead of expecting a standard script.

You may like a dog’s collaborative energy and a cat’s self-directed rhythm. “Both” is not a compromise answer; it accurately reflects a broad attachment style.
Choose “neither” without guilt
Not wanting a pet, preferring wildlife at a distance, or finding another animal a better fit is valid. A responsible non-owner is better for animal welfare than someone who adopts under pressure.
Common myths to leave behind
- “You must own a cat.” No. Housing, finances, allergies, and life stage affect ownership; identity can exist without it.
- “Cat people are all the same.” Research does not establish a universal human personality profile.
- “A cat’s independence means it needs less care.” Cats still require preventive medicine, enrichment, safe resources, and observation.
- “More cuddling means more love.” Affection can look like sitting nearby, slow blinking, play, grooming, or choosing to share a room.
- “Liking cats means disliking dogs.” Preferences overlap, and many people identify with both.
The practical verdict
If several signs describe how you naturally notice, respect, and enjoy cats, calling yourself a cat person is perfectly reasonable. The label is yours to use loosely, change over time, or skip entirely. What matters for any real cat is not whether you pass a stereotype test, but whether you can observe the individual animal, meet its needs, and let trust develop at a safe pace.
