Asian elephants in a controlled detour task could adjust their behavior when a food box changed, rather than repeatedly forcing the old approach. That pattern is consistent with inhibitory control, but the experiment does not prove human-like self-control or settle whether elephants were resisting an urge to reach through a transparent barrier.
The strongest result was task-specific: elephants took longer when the box opening moved to a new position, then became faster as that position was repeated. The study also found no latency increase when an opaque box was replaced by a transparent one, an important qualification to any claim about resisting a direct reach toward visible food.

What the rotated fruit box experiment tested
The experiment was a detour task, a standard way to study how animals handle a tempting reward that cannot be reached by the most direct movement. Instead of pulling fruit straight toward the trunk, an animal must find and use an opening in a barrier. Success depends on more than motivation: the animal has to notice the obstacle, search for the access point and avoid repeating an ineffective movement.
Researchers tested 16 Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) at Thailand’s National Elephant Institute in Lampang. There were eight males and eight females, ranging from 4 to 60 years old. Sessions took place from August 2023 through January 2024. The work measured behavior in this particular apparatus and food-search situation; it was not a broad intelligence test or a direct measure of how elephants behave in the wild.

How the apparatus worked
During familiarization, each elephant learned to retrieve food from an opaque cube measuring 40 × 40 × 40 centimeters. The test cube was transparent and had five 2-centimeter holes in its front. The usable opening could be oriented at the top, bottom, left or right. Pineapple, apple or banana served as rewards, selected with input from mahouts and veterinarians.
Researchers measured the latency from the elephant’s first touch on the box until its trunk entered the opening. They also recorded how many times the box was touched and how long the trunk remained inside. Those measures separate several behaviors: initial hesitation, physical exploration and persistence once the animal has found the route to the food.
What happened when the opening moved?
Changing the opening disrupted performance at first. In session 3, when the orientation changed, mean latency to enter was 8.18 ± 1.0 seconds. In the preceding trial, where the same orientation had been repeated, the mean was 2.21 ± 0.4 seconds. These figures came from 16 elephants across 128 trials.

The delay did not persist at the new position. With repeated trials at a constant orientation, entry became faster. After the first familiarization trial, every elephant entered in less than a minute on subsequent trials. Across those trials, the reported maximum latency was 57.93 seconds and the overall mean latency was 3.68 ± 0.23 seconds.

This sequence matters. A longer delay immediately after the box changed suggests that the animals were not simply executing a fixed motor routine. Improvement after repetition suggests they learned the new spatial relationship and updated their search. It is evidence of flexible inhibition in this task: the elephants had to suppress continued reliance on a previously effective route long enough to locate the opening again.
Searching after contact, rather than guessing from a distance
When the orientation differed from the preceding trial, there were 208 trials in total. Elephants went directly into the opening without first touching the box in only eight of them. In most cases, they contacted the box and then searched. The authors suggest that tactile information, or olfactory information available at close range, may have guided this search, but the design did not isolate which cue each elephant used.
That detail helps explain why a rotated box is informative. The elephants generally did not appear to identify the new opening instantly from across the enclosure. They interacted with the barrier, gathered information and adjusted their movements.
Did visible fruit make them reach impulsively?
The study included a second comparison: the last familiarization trial with an opaque box versus the first test trial with a transparent box. The transparent box allowed the elephants to see and smell the reward through the barrier. If visibility created a strong urge to reach directly toward the fruit, researchers might expect an abrupt increase in entry latency while the animal inhibited that response.

That increase did not occur. Latency was not higher when the transparent test box was introduced. This result does not, by itself, demonstrate that the elephants successfully suppressed a direct reach. The transparent barrier may simply not have produced a sufficiently strong prepotent response to create a measurable delay. The authors explicitly keep both explanations open.
| Experimental contrast | Observed pattern | What it can support | What it cannot establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Opaque box versus first transparent-box trial | No increase in latency when the reward became visible and remained behind the barrier | The transparent condition did not slow entry in this setup | It does not prove that elephants inhibited a powerful direct-reaching impulse |
| Repeated orientation versus a newly changed orientation | 8.18 ± 1.0 seconds after a change, versus 2.21 ± 0.4 seconds on the preceding repeated-orientation trial | Changing the spatial problem initially disrupted performance, followed by improvement with repetition | It does not measure general self-control in every context |
Why researchers describe this as inhibitory control
Inhibitory control is the ability to withhold or change a response that was previously attractive, automatic or successful. In the rotated-box task, two possible impulses were relevant. One was reaching toward food behind a transparent barrier. The other was continuing to use a strategy that had worked when the opening was in a different position.
Postdoctoral researcher Sydney Hope characterized the result this way: “We found that, when elephants were faced with a situation in which they needed to suppress an impulsive behavior, either the impulse to reach directly toward a food reward behind a transparent barrier or the impulse to continue using a previously effective technique, they were generally able to suppress the impulse.” That is a description of the observed pattern, not a claim that the experiment measured every form of elephant self-control.
The peer-reviewed findings support the second part of that interpretation more clearly than the first. A changed orientation produced a measurable, temporary slowdown, followed by faster entries when the same orientation was repeated. The transparent-barrier comparison, in contrast, produced no slowdown, so it cannot distinguish successful inhibition from a weak temptation.

What age and sex were associated with
Age was positively related to both latency to enter and time spent inside the box when the orientation changed. In this sample, older elephants tended to take longer on that particular disruption and remained inside the box longer. Sex was not related to those measures.
These are associations among 16 elephants performing one task. They should not be presented as proof of general cognitive decline with age. Differences in experience, training history, physical movement, sensory strategies or individual temperament could also contribute. The result is best treated as a possible age-related difference in this detour behavior, one that needs testing with larger samples and more tasks.

Strengths of the design
- The same animals encountered repeated and changed orientations, allowing researchers to compare disruption with subsequent adjustment.
- Latency, touches and time inside the box provided more than a simple pass-or-fail score.
- The sample included both sexes and a wide age range, from 4 to 60 years.
- The apparatus and rewards were standardized while food choices remained appropriate for the elephants’ care setting.
Important limits
- Only 16 elephants from one facility in Thailand participated, so the findings may not represent Asian elephants everywhere.
- The experiment tested behavior around a food reward, not planning, empathy, memory, social decision-making or impulse control in daily life.
- The exact sensory cues used during searching were not isolated. Contact with the box, close-range smell and touch could all have contributed.
- The transparent box did not produce a latency increase, leaving the strength of the direct-reaching impulse uncertain.
- A laboratory-style task cannot show that the measured behavior reduces human-elephant conflict. Conservation relevance is a possible future implication, not an outcome demonstrated here.
What the result says about elephant behavior
The cautious conclusion is that these elephants were capable of changing a food-search response when the problem changed. They did not remain locked into the first successful movement. Instead, a new opening position produced a short-term cost, and repeated exposure at that position brought performance back down.
That flexibility fits one component of self-control: suppressing a response that no longer works. It also shows why animal cognition claims need a precise task description. “Elephants have self-control” is broader than the evidence. “Sixteen Asian elephants adjusted their approach in a rotated-box detour task, with longer entry latencies after orientation changes and faster performance across repetitions” is a conclusion the experiment can support.

How this compares with a simple reach test
A simple reach test asks whether an animal can get food from an obvious opening. The rotated-box design adds a changing spatial rule. The animal must first learn where access is, then update that expectation when the opening moves. This makes the task sensitive to perseveration—the tendency to keep repeating a previously rewarded action—even when the evidence has changed.
The two contrasts therefore answer different questions. The opaque-to-transparent comparison asks whether making the reward visible changes the initial response. The familiar-to-new orientation comparison asks whether changing the route disrupts a learned strategy and whether the animal can adapt. Treating them as one result would hide the study’s most important qualification.
What remains to be tested
Future studies could strengthen the interpretation by testing more elephants at multiple facilities, varying the distance and visibility of the food, and separating tactile from olfactory information. Researchers could also compare young, middle-aged and older animals with matched training histories, repeat the task with non-food incentives and include additional measures of reversal learning or delayed gratification.
Those designs would help determine whether the observed flexibility is stable across settings or mainly reflects familiarity with handlers and apparatus. They could also reveal whether age differences persist when physical movement, sensory access and prior experience are controlled.
The practical takeaway
The rotated fruit box offers credible evidence of task-specific behavioral flexibility and inhibitory control in Asian elephants. The clearest signal is the temporary slowdown after the opening changed, followed by improvement with repetition. The absence of a slowdown when the box became transparent is equally important: it prevents the experiment from being treated as conclusive proof that elephants resisted a strong urge to reach directly for visible food.
