If your cat crouches, watches you pass, then darts at your ankles, the most common explanation is play-related predatory behavior: your moving legs have become a chase target. Stalking, ambushing, pouncing, grabbing and biting are all part of normal hunting-style play, particularly in kittens and young cats or cats without enough suitable outlets.
That pattern does not prove the attack is harmless play. Fear, redirected arousal, territorial conflict, pain and illness can look similar. The safest response is to study the circumstances, redirect the cat to toys rather than body parts, avoid punishment and arrange veterinary help when the behavior is new, severe, painful or difficult to control.

How to tell what kind of attack you are seeing
The same ankle bite can have very different causes. Look at what happens immediately before the attack, the cat’s posture and what happens afterward.

| Possible cause | Common trigger | Body language or pattern | Best first response |
|---|---|---|---|
| Play or predatory behavior | A person walking past or an available chase opportunity | Hiding, staring, stalking, tail movement, then a quiet pounce; chasing, grasping or biting | Schedule interactive play and redirect to a wand or feather toy kept away from hands and legs |
| Fear or defensive aggression | A threatening approach, cornering or inability to escape | Low or crouched posture, ears back, tucked tail, hissing, growling or spitting | Stop advancing, give the cat an escape route and do not force contact |
| Redirected arousal | An outdoor cat, prey animal, sudden noise or conflict the cat cannot reach | Intense agitation followed by an apparently unprovoked attack on a nearby person | Do not approach while aroused; identify and reduce the inaccessible trigger when safe |
| Territorial behavior | A particular hallway, doorway, window, new person, animal or household change | Attacks tied to one location or environmental change | Log the setting and preceding events, then reduce the trigger and seek professional advice if needed |
| Pain or illness | Touch, anticipated handling or movement near a painful area | Sudden behavior change, sensitivity, irritability or other signs of being unwell | Arrange a veterinary examination rather than treating it as a training problem |
Why play aggression targets legs
Cats are built to notice movement. A foot or ankle passing a doorway can resemble prey and provide an easy ambush opportunity. Cornell’s Feline Health Center describes play-aggressive cats stalking a person and pouncing as the person passes. ASPCA guidance likewise lists stalking, chasing, ambushing, pouncing and biting as play and predatory actions.

Young cats may still be learning to control claws and bite pressure. Limited play, boredom and earlier games involving fingers, toes or wrestling can teach a cat that human body parts are acceptable toys. The behavior can continue into adulthood if it reliably produces movement, attention or an exciting chase.
When the attack may signal fear or redirected arousal
Fear and defense
A fearful cat is trying to increase distance, not start a game. A low body, flattened or sideways ears, a tucked tail, hissing, growling or spitting are warnings to stop approaching. Cornering the cat, reaching toward it or blocking its escape can intensify the response.

Redirected arousal
A cat may become highly aroused by an outdoor animal at a window, prey it cannot reach, a loud noise or a dispute with another cat. If a person walks by during that state, the person can become the available target. Because the original trigger may be out of sight, the attack can seem unprovoked. Keep away until the cat has settled; attempting to pick it up or soothe it during the episode can result in another bite or scratch.

Medical problems can cause aggression
Pain lowers a cat’s tolerance for movement and touch. Cornell lists hyperthyroidism, osteoarthritis, dental disease and central nervous system problems among possible medical contributors to aggression; ASPCA and the Merck Veterinary Manual also describe medical causes. A new attack pattern, a cat that seems painful, or aggression accompanied by changes in appetite, mobility, grooming, sleep, litter-box use or general behavior warrants veterinary assessment.

What to do when your cat ambushes you
- Keep a brief log. Record the time, location, what happened in the preceding minutes, the cat’s posture and what it did afterward. Repeated hallway ambushes or a connection with a window, noise or household event can reveal the trigger.
- Interrupt before the pounce. If the timing is predictable, start an interactive session before the usual attack period. Use a wand or feather toy and keep the moving end away from your hands, feet and legs.
- Rotate suitable toys. Feather-on-a-string toys, toy mice, balls and rolled paper are examples UC Davis lists for rough play. Offer variety so the cat has legal targets for chasing, grabbing and kicking.
- Remove body parts from the game. Do not wiggle fingers or toes, wrestle, or invite the cat to chase a hand. Everyone in the household should use the same rule.
- End an episode without punishment. Do not hit, kick, yell at or physically punish the cat, and do not grab an aroused animal. When you can do so safely, stop interaction, create distance and allow the cat time to settle. Cornell notes that “Walking away and ignoring a cat engaged in play aggression may teach him that inappropriately aggressive play results in no play at all.”
- Protect people while you investigate. Wear sturdy footwear if necessary, keep children away from an actively aroused cat and use doors or barriers to prevent access to a predictable ambush route.
When to call a veterinarian or behavior professional
Contact your veterinarian if the aggression is sudden, escalating, severe, associated with apparent pain or illness, or unexplained by the pattern you observe. A veterinary examination can look for medical contributors before a behavior plan is chosen. If attacks remain difficult to prevent or someone is being injured, ask your veterinarian about a qualified veterinary behavior professional. A feather wand or other interactive cat toy can support redirection, but it cannot replace medical assessment when warning signs are present.
