A festive cat scratcher is most likely to be a welcome gift when it matches the way the recipient cat already scratches. Check whether the cat reaches upward or scratches along the floor, and notice which surfaces it chooses. Then pick a playful shape or look in a material and orientation that suits those habits.
Choose a scratcher for the cat, not just the look
Scratching is normal feline behavior, not a bad habit a cat can simply be expected to stop. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine’s Cornell Feline Health Center describes it as innate and recommends offering acceptable alternatives. A colorful or unusual design can make the gift feel festive, but its shape alone does not show that a cat will use it.

Before choosing, observe the cat at home if you can. Does it stretch up a sofa corner or post, or scratch a rug while standing over it? Does it go for a rough, nubby surface or a flatter, carpet-like one? Those clues are more useful than assuming that all cats prefer cardboard, sisal, curves, or novelty shapes.

Cornell discusses cardboard and sisal as options to match to a cat’s preferences; UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine also identifies carpet or sisal posts and corrugated cardboard as acceptable choices. The American Animal Hospital Association lists sisal, cardboard, and rope among scratcher materials. None establishes a single best surface for every cat: Cornell on destructive scratching, UC Davis on inappropriate scratching, and AAHA on indoor enrichment.

Make a vertical scratcher stable and usable
If the cat scratches vertically, prioritize function over an elaborate silhouette. Cornell advises choosing a post that is sturdy and tall enough for the cat to stretch while scratching. A wobbly post or one too short for the cat’s reach is a poor fit even if it looks striking. Upright scratchers need a firm base or secure mounting; low-profile cardboard boards may be easier to place in a tight space.
Place the gift where scratching already happens
A new scratcher is more likely to serve as an acceptable alternative if it is placed near a spot the cat already scratches. Cornell specifically recommends positioning an appropriate scratcher next to the targeted area. That is a practical redirection strategy, not a guarantee that furniture will be left untouched. Keep the chosen orientation and material consistent with what the cat already does.

Keep the festive presentation safe
Cornell’s Feline Health Center notes that toys can encourage exercise and cognitive enrichment while strengthening the bond between a person and a cat. For a holiday gift, make the presentation simple and avoid hazards that can turn play into an emergency.

A simple gift-picking checklist
- Watch whether the cat scratches vertically or horizontally.
- Notice its preferred texture instead of guessing from general cat trends.
