If your cat turns down wet food but still eats its usual amount of dry food, the issue may be food preference or the feeding setup—not a loss of appetite. If your cat is eating less overall, losing weight, or acting unwell, contact a veterinarian rather than treating it as pickiness. The Catster archive lists an Ask Dr. Paola episode with this title on October 5, 2026, but its listing does not provide the episode’s full advice; the guidance below draws on Cornell University and VCA veterinary resources.
First check whether your cat is refusing wet food or eating less altogether
Those are different situations. A cat that eats its usual dry food but declines wet food may simply prefer another texture or have a problem with the food or feeding area. A cat that has reduced its total intake needs closer attention: appetite loss can be associated with illness or pain, including dental pain.
For a few days, record what your cat actually eats—not just what you offer—including dry food, wet food, and treats. Note approximate amounts, changes in weight, and any changes in behavior. VCA recommends a 3–5 day food diary when intake is unclear; the veterinary team can use that record to assess the situation. Calorie needs vary with weight, body condition, life stage, and activity, so a portion that looks adequate may not be adequate for an individual cat. When to call a veterinarian
Contact your veterinarian if your cat is eating less overall, losing weight, or showing other changes in health or behavior. Do not assume a new reluctance to eat is mere fussiness. Cornell advises veterinary consultation when anorexia is noticed. As Cornell lecturer Carolyn McDaniel, VMD, puts it: “A cat that is not eating deserves to have a full veterinary workup—a thorough physical exam followed by any lab work and imaging that’s indicated by the exam.” Cornell Feline Health Center: Anorexia

Cornell specifically advises that a veterinarian examine a cat that refuses food and is losing weight. Cornell Feline Health Center: Feeding Your Cat Avoid delaying an assessment while repeatedly trying new foods. Do not force food into your cat’s mouth as a casual home fix: Cornell notes that this can worsen food aversion. If nutritional support is needed, it should be guided by a veterinarian.
If your cat eats normally otherwise, check the food and feeding setup
If your cat continues to eat its normal amount of another suitable food, maintains weight, and seems well, start with simple environmental and freshness checks. Cornell notes that cats can be selective and that noise, household traffic, other animals, dirty bowls, or a feeding spot near a litter box can deter eating.

VCA recommends ruling out medical causes before labeling a cat a picky eater. If the refusal is new or persists, discuss it with your veterinarian rather than assuming it is only a preference. VCA Animal Hospitals: Feline Picky Eaters
Does every cat have to eat wet food?
Wet food is a feeding format, not a requirement established for every cat. Cornell says it can be offered in addition to or instead of dry food. It is typically 70–80% water, according to Cornell; keep fresh water available, especially if your cat eats only dry food. Cornell Feline Health Center: How Often Should You Feed Your Cat?

If you compare foods, check that the food is complete and balanced for your cat’s life stage, whether your cat accepts its texture, and the calories and portion being offered. Follow any diet recommendation your veterinarian has made for your cat’s health needs. A change in format should not distract from a broader drop in appetite.
