What services are described for free-roaming dogs?
Animals Fiji describes a population-management approach that involves trapping, neutering, vaccinating and releasing free-roaming dogs and cats. Its account frames this as humane population management carried out with local councils, government, welfare organisations, businesses and communities. The description is national in scope; it should not be read as a complete list of services currently offered at the Labasa clinic or as a guarantee that every free-roaming dog receives each treatment.

In September 2026, FijiGlobalNews reported that Animals Fiji and the Ministry of Agriculture offered free desexing, microchipping, and flea and tick treatment at the National Agriculture Show in Labasa. The report does not establish treatment totals or precise dates for the clinic, so those details cannot be stated as outcomes.
What Labasa council records say about stray-dog actions
Available records show several dated approaches, rather than one demonstrably unchanged policy. They describe activities, not a current population count or a reliable assessment of effectiveness.

| Period | Documented action | What the record establishes |
|---|---|---|
| 2018 annual-report period | Labasa Town Council reported two-week stray-dog trapping programmes in each half of the year; 23 dogs were trapped and put to sleep by the animal-health department. | A historical council practice for that reporting period, not evidence of current policy. |
| 2020–2021 | The council reported periodic exercises with the Ministry of Primary Industries in which 42 dogs were trapped, desexed and released. | A dated activity count, not an estimate of Labasa’s total dog population. |
| 2022 parliamentary response | The council described dogs caught in exercises being held in a special pound, desexed by a senior veterinary officer and released. It also described awareness activity intended to encourage owners to confine their dogs. | A description of the approach in that response; it does not settle what is done now. |
The 2018 and 2020–2021 records document materially different outcomes: euthanasia in the earlier report and desexing followed by release in the later one. The records do not provide a full policy history, follow-up results or a basis for comparing effectiveness. The 42-dog figure is not a stray-dog population estimate.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is known—and not known—about current response
Animals Fiji describes its population-management work as ongoing and collaborative, while the council documents confirm particular activities in earlier reporting periods. Together, these sources show veterinary and local-authority involvement, but they do not establish the exact current council procedure for handling a stray dog in Labasa. Nor do they provide a contemporary Labasa-specific estimate of free-roaming dogs.
