Plan your pet’s evacuation destination, identification, transport, and supplies before a disaster warning arrives. ASPCA’s September 1, 2026 guidance recommends keeping pets with you when you evacuate and preparing enough food and water for at least seven to ten days, plus two weeks of medication. Check in advance that your destination accepts your pets; emergency shelters do not all admit animals.

Make a destination plan before an evacuation

Choose more than one place your pet could go, preferably outside the immediate hazard area. Options include a pet-friendly hotel, boarding facility, animal shelter that offers emergency housing, or a friend or relative who agrees to take your pet. Call ahead to confirm that each location accepts your pet’s species and number of animals, and ask about any requirements.

Ask your veterinarian for boarding referrals and contact local animal shelters to find out whether they provide emergency shelter or foster care. Also identify a nearby temporary caregiver who can enter your home and transport your pet if you are away. Discuss longer-term care with a trusted person before an emergency makes that conversation urgent.

  • Can the caregiver access your home and transport your pet?
  • Do you have an appropriate carrier or crate for every pet?
  • Can you safely store and rotate the food, water, and medication your pet needs?

Do not assume a public emergency shelter accepts pets. Confirm its policy and identify an alternative before a crisis.

Build a portable pet evacuation kit

Keep the kit somewhere easy to reach and carry. ASPCA’s September 2026 list calls for at least seven to ten days of food and water and two weeks of medication. Rotate stored food and medication so supplies do not spoil or expire. Ask your veterinarian what to include in a pet first-aid kit.

Medication and health records Two weeks of medication, stored in a waterproof container; crucial medical information and a copy of medical records, in print or accessible digitally.

Safety and reunification A pet first-aid kit, recent photos of your pet, and any species-specific supplies your animal needs.

Prepare identification and records for separation

Make sure your pet wears a collar and tag with current contact details and any urgent medical needs. Put the pet’s name and your contact information on the carrier. Check that the microchip is registered and that the database has your current phone number and address; ASPCA describes microchipping as a more permanent form of identification.

Keep recent photos and medical records where you can reach them during an evacuation. They can help identify your pet and support reunification if you become separated.

When a warning arrives, take your pets with you

  1. Bring pets indoors. When a storm or other disaster warning begins, keep pets inside; frightened or disoriented animals can escape.
  2. Follow evacuation instructions. Follow local and state officials’ directions and leave with your pets. ASPCA’s guidance is direct: “If it isn’t safe for you, it isn’t safe for your pets.”
  3. Use the destination you confirmed. Go to a pet-accepting location outside the immediate danger area, with each animal’s carrier and supplies.

If you are forced to leave a pet at home, ASPCA advises placing a visible safety alert for emergency responders. Treat that as a contingency, not a substitute for taking your pet with you.

What ASPCA’s preparedness figures do—and do not—show

In a 2011 poll conducted by Lake Research Partners and commissioned by ASPCA, 35 percent of cat and dog owners reported having no disaster preparedness plan. Among owners who had a plan, 85 percent of dog owners and 81 percent of cat owners intended to bring their pets during an evacuation. These are historical survey results, not estimates of current preparedness.
