Yes, some cooling gel products can pose a serious poisoning risk to dogs if chewed and swallowed. In an October 5, 2026 warning, the ASPCA said it is receiving weekly reports of suspected severe acrylamide toxicosis linked to ingestion of certain consumer hydrogel products, including some cooling pet beds and pads, migraine caps, eye masks and wraps. The warning does not establish that every cooling mat or brand is dangerous.
What the ASPCA warning says—and what it doesn’t
The ASPCA’s October 5, 2026 announcement summarizes data for 45 dogs with suspected acrylamide toxicosis associated with ingestion of consumer polyacrylamide-based hydrogel products. The ASPCA describes this as a case series, not an estimate of how often dogs are poisoned overall. It says the products involved spanned a wide number of brands. ASPCA’s announcement
The ASPCA also reported acrylamide measurements of 12,900–51,800 parts per million (ppm) in some tested cooling gel products. It compared those results with an expected range below 1 to 600 ppm, saying the measured levels were 21–86 times the upper end of that range. These are results from some tested products—not a finding about every hydrogel item for sale or a universal concentration. The announcement summarizes work published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association; it is not the full journal article.
An ASPCA veterinary resource adds that gel from three products associated with cases was analyzed and that all three had high acrylamide levels, with one exceeding 50 mg/g. Which products are involved?
The warning concerns certain products containing consumer hydrogel, including cooling pet beds or pads and human-use migraine caps, eye masks and wraps. The ASPCA also refers to gel packs. Product formulations vary, and the evidence centers on dogs ingesting contents after a product is chewed, punctured or otherwise damaged. It does not establish that every cooling bed is hazardous or that skin contact has the same evidence base as ingestion.
For a particular item, check its packaging and ingredient information and consider whether your dog can chew or puncture it. Those checks can help you assess access and share useful details with a veterinarian, but they do not certify a product as safe.

Signs of possible acrylamide toxicosis in dogs
Signs reported by the ASPCA include:
- Vomiting
- Muscle tremors or unsteadiness on the feet
- Unusual sensitivity to sound or touch
- Low blood pressure or increased heart rate
- Seizures; deaths have also been reported
These signs warrant urgent veterinary attention, especially neurologic signs such as tremors, unsteadiness or seizures. Do not wait for symptoms if you know or suspect your dog swallowed gel.
What to do if your dog chewed or swallowed a cooling mat
- Call your veterinarian or ASPCA Poison Control promptly. The ASPCA advises contacting them if a pet may have ingested any amount of product contents. ASPCA Poison Control is available at 888-426-4435, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year; a consultation fee may apply.
- Go to the nearest veterinarian immediately if neurologic signs are present. Do not delay emergency care to make another call or to monitor your dog at home.
- Keep the product information. Save the packaging, label and ingredient details for the veterinary team. If possible, note what was chewed and when, without delaying the call or trip.
- Do not attempt home treatment. The ASPCA says there is no antidote; veterinary care focuses on controlling signs and providing supportive treatment. This is not a condition to treat with home remedies.

How to reduce exposure at home
- Store gel products and hot/cold packs securely where pets cannot reach them.
- Do not leave a dog unsupervised with a cooling mat if chewing is a risk.
- Promptly clean leaked gel and keep pets away from the spill.
- Wear nitrile gloves when handling spilled gel or a damaged product, as the ASPCA recommends.
- Keep packaging and ingredient information in case a veterinarian needs to identify the product.
The ASPCA also advises reporting adverse events to manufacturers and appropriate agencies such as the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) or the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
