At-home grooming works best as a calm maintenance routine: brush according to the coat, bathe a dog only when needed, inspect paws and skin, and handle nails, ears, eyes, and teeth conservatively. It keeps a pet comfortable and gives you regular opportunities to spot changes early. It does not replace veterinary care or a professional groomer for severe mats, sensitive-area trimming, difficult nails, or any suspected illness.
Dogs and cats need different techniques. The bathing, ear-cleaning, nail-trimming, and tooth-brushing steps below are primarily for dogs unless a cat-specific instruction is stated. Do not apply dog procedures to a cat without advice from a veterinarian familiar with cats.

What a safe home-grooming routine includes
There is no universal grooming calendar or single “best” brush. The right routine depends on species, breed, coat length and texture, outdoor activity, skin health, age, and how well the animal tolerates handling. A long-coated dog may need brushing every day, while another dog may stay comfortable with a few sessions each week. A cat’s needs also vary by coat and tolerance.

- Maintenance: remove loose hair and debris, keep nails at a functional length, and keep the coat clean.
- Observation: notice mats, burrs, cuts, swelling, redness, unusual odor, discharge, cloudiness, or a foreign object before it becomes a larger problem.
The ASPCA describes skin condition as an indication of a cat or dog’s overall health. That does not make grooming a diagnostic procedure; it means a routine check can tell you when to stop grooming and ask a veterinary professional for help.

Set up before you touch the coat
Choose a calm location and short sessions
Use a non-slip surface, good lighting, and treats your pet already tolerates. Begin when the animal is rested. Let it investigate a brush, clippers, towel, or toothbrush before you use the item. Touch one body area briefly, reward calm behavior, and stop while the experience is still positive. Several short sessions are safer than forcing one long session.
Assemble task-specific supplies
- A brush chosen for the coat type.
- A mild shampoo formulated for dogs when bathing a dog.
- Dog nail clippers or a grinder only if you have been shown how to use them safely.
- Styptic powder in case a nail is cut too short.
- Towels and, when appropriate for the individual dog, a low-stress dryer.
- A dog-specific toothbrush and toothpaste for canine dental care.
Do not improvise with household scissors around mats, eyes, ears, paw pads, or other sensitive areas. A sudden movement can turn a small grooming task into a serious cut.
Brushing: match the tool to the coat
Brush selection should follow the coat, not a one-size-fits-all product list. Common tool categories include pin brushes, bristle brushes, slicker brushes, and rubber curry combs. Their usefulness varies with coat texture, length, density, and whether the goal is to lift loose hair, remove surface debris, or work through a longer coat. If you are unsure, ask a veterinarian or professional groomer before buying; a coat-appropriate dog grooming brush is more important than a fashionable brand or a generic “all-purpose” label.

Use gentle, methodical strokes
- Let the dog or cat sniff the brush, then touch the shoulder or back with it for a few seconds.
- Brush in small sections with light pressure. Work from the outer coat toward the skin without scraping.
- Check behind the ears, under the collar, in the armpits, around the tail, and between the legs, where tangles often hide.
- Pause when the animal becomes tense, tries to escape, or shows signs of pain. Resume later or get help.
- After brushing, run your hands over the coat and inspect for mats, burrs, plant material, cuts, and scrapes.
Many dogs need brushing a few times a week; long-coated dogs may need daily brushing. These are starting points, not rules. Increase frequency when the coat tangles quickly or the dog is shedding heavily, and reduce intensity if the skin becomes irritated.
When a mat is not a home project
Small, loose tangles may respond to careful brushing, but tight mats can pull the skin and conceal inflammation or wounds. Never cut a mat with household scissors. The animal may move suddenly, and the scissors can penetrate skin that is hidden inside the mat. A groomer has appropriate tools and training to remove severe mats and trim around sensitive areas safely. A veterinarian should handle mats associated with wounds, sores, parasites, or suspected infection.
Bathing a dog without irritating the skin
Bathtime should be based on the dog’s coat, activity, and skin health rather than a rigid monthly schedule. The ASPCA’s dog-and-cat overview, published April 9, 2020, gives bathing dogs at least once every three months as a general recommendation, with more frequent bathing potentially needed after outdoor activity or for skin problems. More recent American Kennel Club guidance emphasizes that individual variation matters, so treat the ASPCA interval as general advice, not a universal prescription.

Dog-bathing procedure
- Brush first to remove loose hair and identify mats. Water can tighten tangles.
- Use comfortably warm water and wet the coat thoroughly, keeping water out of the eyes and ear canals.
- Massage a mild shampoo made for dogs through the coat. Do not substitute human shampoo unless a veterinarian specifically directs it.
- Rinse until the water runs clear and no slippery residue remains. Leftover shampoo can irritate skin.
- Towel-dry gently. Use a dryer only when the dog’s coat, health, and tolerance make it appropriate; keep the setting and distance comfortable and avoid frightening the dog.
- Keep the dog indoors until fully dry, and avoid outdoor bathing in cold weather.
Frequent bathing can strip natural oils and leave skin or coat dry. If a dog has itching, odor, recurrent redness, or another skin problem, ask a veterinarian which product and frequency are appropriate instead of experimenting with shampoos.
Nail trimming and paw checks
Inspect each paw during routine care. Look between the toes and pads for sticks, stones, burrs, cracks, dryness, swelling, cuts, or another object. Nails that click on hard flooring or snag on fabric may be too long, but sound alone is not a substitute for looking at the nail and learning the correct technique.
Understand the quick before trimming
The quick is the blood vessel and sensitive tissue inside a nail. Trim only the small tip beyond it. Cutting into the quick causes pain and bleeding. Dark nails make the boundary difficult to see, so a veterinarian or groomer should demonstrate the process before you attempt them. Keep styptic powder nearby for accidental bleeding and stop if the pet struggles.

Some animals tolerate a grinder better than clippers; others dislike the vibration. Either tool requires training, a secure grip, and conservative removal. If the animal is frightened, the owner is uncertain, or the nails are very dark or overgrown, schedule a professional trim rather than restraining the pet forcefully.
Cat nail intervals are not dog instructions
The ASPCA’s April 9, 2020 article gives trimming cats’ nails every 10 days to two weeks as a practical interval. That recommendation is cat-specific and should not be used to set a dog’s schedule. Cat owners who have not been taught where the quick is should ask a veterinary professional for a demonstration.

Eyes
Look for persistent tearing, crust, cloudiness, inflammation, swelling, or a change in the way the eye opens. Wipe only visible debris with a clean, damp material if your veterinarian has said that is appropriate. Redness, pain, cloudiness, injury, or discharge warrants veterinary advice rather than home medication.

Ears
For dogs, clean only the visible outer ear area with materials suitable for canine ears. Never insert cotton swabs, fingers, or another object deep into the ear canal. Redness, swelling, a strong odor, persistent scratching, head shaking, debris, or discharge can indicate an ear problem requiring examination. Improvised cleaning can push material deeper or damage the canal.
Skin
While brushing or bathing, look for new lumps, sores, scabs, bald patches, parasites, unusual odor, redness, swelling, or a foreign object. Do not shave, scrape, or apply a human product to an abnormal area unless a veterinarian directs you. A wound, suspected infection, or unusual skin condition is a reason to stop grooming and call the veterinary practice.
Dog teeth
Daily brushing is ideal for dogs, and brushing a few times per week can still help, according to American Kennel Club guidance. Use a toothbrush and toothpaste made for dogs. Human toothpaste is unsafe because some formulations contain xylitol, which is toxic to dogs. Introduce dental care gradually: let the dog taste the toothpaste, touch the lips, then brush a few teeth before increasing the duration. Bleeding gums, severe tartar, loose teeth, pain, or bad breath that persists despite routine care should be assessed by a veterinarian.
Dog and cat care choices at a glance
| Task | Dog guidance | Cat guidance | When to escalate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brushing | Choose a tool for coat type; many dogs need a few sessions weekly, while long coats may need daily work. | Frequency depends on coat and tolerance; the ASPCA article (April 9, 2020) gives one or two brushings per week as a practical example. | Painful mats, skin lesions, or a pet that cannot be handled safely. |
| Bathing | Use dog shampoo, rinse completely, and bathe as needed. The ASPCA’s general interval is at least once every three months, with exceptions. | Do not transfer dog-bathing steps or products without cat-specific veterinary advice. | Skin disease, repeated odor, wounds, or severe fear. |
| Nails | Trim only the tip beyond the quick; dark nails require extra instruction. | The ASPCA article suggests every 10 days to two weeks as a practical interval. | Bleeding, overgrown nails, dark nails, or a stressful struggle. |
| Ears and eyes | Clean only visible outer ear areas; watch for discharge, odor, redness, swelling, or eye changes. | Use species-specific veterinary guidance before cleaning. | Foreign objects, pain, cloudiness, discharge, swelling, or strong odor. |
Know when professional help is the safer option
Home care is appropriate for routine maintenance when the pet is comfortable and the owner understands the technique. Arrange a groomer or veterinary appointment when:
- The coat has tight or extensive mats, especially near the skin or sensitive areas.
- You have not been taught to trim nails, use a grinder, or handle a fearful animal.
- The pet repeatedly snaps, panics, or cannot be safely positioned.
- There is a wound, sore, suspected infection, foreign object, unusual discharge, swelling, or significant pain.
- You are considering a coat cut, sanitary trim, or another procedure beyond basic brushing and bathing.
- You are considering expressing anal sacs. Do not attempt this without appropriate professional training.
A professional can demonstrate a technique, recommend tools for the specific coat, and tell you which findings require a veterinary examination. Veterinary staff are the right resource for medical concerns; groomers are valuable partners for coat management and routine handling.
A practical weekly routine
- Observe: In a calm moment, look at the eyes, ears, skin, paws, and coat for changes.
- Brush: Use the coat-appropriate tool gently, concentrating on tangle-prone areas.
- Handle: Briefly touch paws, ears, and mouth while rewarding calm behavior; this builds tolerance for future care.
- Record: Note a new lump, recurring mat, nail that keeps snagging, or any change in odor or discharge so you can describe it accurately to a professional.
- Stop early: End the session before fear or pain escalates. Resuming later is safer than forcing completion.
Use bathing, nail trimming, and dental brushing on the schedule appropriate to the individual animal, not simply because a calendar reminder says every pet should receive the same treatment. Consistent, gentle observation is the main benefit of an at-home routine.
