Atopica for Cats is a prescription cyclosporine oral solution used to control feline allergic dermatitis. In the U.S., its label starts treatment with one dose daily for at least 4 to 6 weeks or until signs resolve; only the prescribing veterinarian should decide whether or how to taper it. Vomiting and other digestive effects are among the reactions reported in field studies, while the medicine’s immune-suppressing action also brings important infection and vaccine precautions.
What Atopica for Cats treats
Atopica for Cats is cyclosporine oral solution USP modified, 100 mg/mL. The U.S. label indicates it to control feline allergic dermatitis in cats at least 6 months old and weighing at least 3 lb (1.4 kg). It is a prescription medicine and, as the label states, “Federal (USA) Law restricts this drug to use by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian.” See Elanco’s U.S. prescribing information and its Atopica for Cats product information.
What is the labeled dose and schedule?
For cats covered by the U.S. label, the initial dose is 3.2 mg per pound per day (7 mg/kg/day), given once daily for a minimum of 4 to 6 weeks or until clinical signs resolve. After that initial period, the label allows the dosing frequency to be tapered to the minimum frequency that maintains the desired therapeutic effect. It does not make this a do-it-yourself dose adjustment: the right schedule for an individual cat must be discussed with the prescribing veterinarian.
These are label directions, not a dose calculator or a substitute for the instructions on your cat’s prescription. Elanco says dose alterations should be made in consultation with a veterinarian; see its Atopica frequently asked questions. Check with the veterinarian before changing the amount or frequency, or deciding what to do after a missed dose or a side effect.

Use the supplied dispensing system and follow the preparation and administration directions provided with the medicine. The U.S. label describes giving the dose followed by a small amount of food, or mixing the dose with a small amount of food. Do not give it with a full meal: food may reduce absorption.
Side effects reported in field studies
In Elanco’s prescribing-information field studies, the following reactions were reported among 205 cats treated with Atopica for Cats. The percentages describe observations in those studies, not a prediction of an individual cat’s risk; the label source reviewed does not state a year for these figures.

Important safety warnings and precautions
Cyclosporine is a systemic immunosuppressant. The U.S. label warns that treatment may increase susceptibility to infection and development of neoplasia, and may reduce response to vaccination. These are risks to discuss with the veterinarian, not a reason to change medication or vaccination plans independently.

Conditions and cats for which the label advises against use
Elanco says not to use Atopica for Cats in cats with a history or suspicion of malignant disorders, FeLV infection, FIV infection, or hypersensitivity to cyclosporine. Safety and effectiveness have not been established in cats younger than 6 months or below 3 lb (1.4 kg). The label also says it is not for breeding cats or pregnant or lactating queens.
Toxoplasmosis and other medical considerations
A cat seronegative for Toxoplasma gondii may develop clinical toxoplasmosis if newly infected during treatment; the label warns that this illness can be fatal and provides precautions to reduce exposure. Tell the veterinarian about the cat’s lifestyle and potential exposure risks.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When to contact the veterinarian
The label advises discontinuing Atopica and contacting the veterinarian if the cat shows signs of serious illness or persistent, progressive weight loss. For vomiting, diarrhea, reduced appetite, or another possible reaction, contact the prescribing veterinarian for instructions rather than independently changing the dose or deciding whether to stop routine treatment. Keep monitoring the cat’s weight as directed.

How quickly does Atopica work?
The U.S. label’s initial schedule is a minimum of 4 to 6 weeks or until clinical signs resolve, but that schedule does not establish a guaranteed onset time for an individual cat. Ask the veterinarian when to assess your cat’s response and what changes should prompt an earlier call.
U.S. label, not a universal direction
This guidance reflects Elanco’s U.S. label and owner materials. Product labeling and directions can differ outside the United States, so owners elsewhere should follow the local product label and their veterinarian’s instructions.
