The Australian Labradoodle is a social, intelligent, multigenerational companion dog with a low-shedding but high-maintenance coat. Here is what prospective owners should know about size, temperament, allergies, grooming, health testing, and breeders.

The Australian Labradoodle is a deliberately developed, multigenerational companion dog—not simply a Labrador Retriever crossed with a Poodle. Australian Labradoodle organizations describe its ancestry as including Labrador Retriever, Poodle, and Cocker Spaniel, although historical and registry definitions are not identical.

It is typically social, intelligent, active, and low-shedding, with a coat that keeps growing and needs substantial maintenance. That combination can make it an excellent family companion, but it is a poor match for anyone wanting a maintenance-free, guaranteed hypoallergenic, or automatically calm dog.

What is an Australian Labradoodle?

The term Australian Labradoodle refers to a planned breeding program developed in Australia over multiple generations. It should not be used as a more impressive name for every Labrador–Poodle cross.

The Australian Labradoodle Association of America (ALAA) currently describes the ancestry as Labrador Retriever, Poodle, and either English or American Cocker Spaniel. Other Australian Labradoodle organizations describe additional historical breeds, including Irish Water Spaniel. Because the associations do not publish identical definitions, a breeder should identify the registry behind its pedigree and terminology.

Term Meaning
Labradoodle A Labrador Retriever crossed with a Poodle.
Australian Labradoodle A multigenerational dog developed through planned breeding and incorporating Labrador, Poodle, and Cocker Spaniel ancestry under the current ALAA description.
Multigenerational Australian Labradoodle An Australian Labradoodle bred to another Australian Labradoodle.
Purebred Australian Labradoodle under the ALAA definition Four consecutive Australian Labradoodle-to-Australian Labradoodle matings.

The name refers to the breed’s development in Australia. It does not mean the dog contains Australian Shepherd ancestry.

Origin and development

The original Labradoodle began in Australia in the 1980s. The Royal Guide Dogs Association received a request for a guide dog that might be suitable for a person with dog allergies. Breeders initially crossed a Labrador Retriever with a Standard Poodle.

Those first crosses were not automatically the modern Australian Labradoodle. Australian breeders continued with multigenerational breeding to make coat, temperament, structure, and working soundness more consistent. The modern dog is therefore the result of a development program rather than one single cross.

The ALAA was established in 2004. The Worldwide Australian Labradoodle Association (WALA) says it was founded in 2018 by 28 breeders. The breed remains maintained by private and international organizations rather than a single universally controlling kennel club.

Is the Australian Labradoodle an AKC breed?

No. The Australian Labradoodle is not recognized by the American Kennel Club, whose current list contains 205 recognized breeds. Australian Labradoodles are instead registered through organizations such as the Australian Labradoodle Association, ALAA, WALA, and regional associations.

These registries maintain pedigrees and publish standards, but their standards are not completely interchangeable. When a breeder quotes a size, ancestry, coat category, or breeding rule, ask which association’s standard is being used.

Size

There is no single worldwide size chart. For example, the current ALAA public ranges and the WALA standard differ:

Size ALAA height WALA height
Miniature 14–16 in (35–42 cm) 12 to under 17 in (30 to under 43 cm)
Medium 17–20 in (43–52 cm) 17 to under 21 in (43 to under 53 cm)
Standard 21–24 in (53–63 cm) 21–28 in (53–71 cm)

WALA lists approximate adult weights from 12 to 85 lb (5.4–38.5 kg). That is a broad range because the category includes miniature, medium, and standard dogs with different builds.

Height is measured from the ground to the withers—the top of the shoulder area. A puppy’s current weight cannot guarantee its final size. Even the parents’ size is only a guide, particularly when a breeder’s lines include several size categories. Ask for the adult heights and weights of close relatives, not just a predicted puppy weight.

Appearance

The Australian Labradoodle is intended to be balanced, athletic, and compact, with moderate bone. Breed standards emphasize a friendly, expressive appearance rather than an extremely delicate or exaggerated one.

Typical features include a proportionate head, a broadly square muzzle, expressive slightly rounded eyes, and a generally people-friendly expression. The coat may be wavy, curly, or, particularly in earlier generations, more hair-like. Colors vary between breeding programs and can include solid and patterned coats.

Appearance alone cannot establish pedigree. Terms such as “furnished,” “multigen,” “European,” or a particular color do not prove that a dog meets an Australian Labradoodle registry’s definition.

Coat types and shedding

WALA identifies three broad coat textures:

  1. Hair coat: moderate to heavy shedding and more common in early generations.
  2. Wool coat: dense, lamb-wool-like, and usually curly; generally very low-shedding.
  3. Fleece coat: silky and ranging from straight to wavy or softly curly; generally low-shedding.

ALAA mainly distinguishes fleece and wool coats, with fleece ranging from wavy to curly and wool described as curly. This is another example of why a quoted coat description should be tied to a particular association.

Multigenerational Australian Labradoodles are usually low-shedding, but “usually” is important. Early-generation dogs—including F1, F2, and F1b dogs—may shed more, and individual dogs vary. No breeder can responsibly promise that every dog will be completely non-shedding.

Low-shedding does not mean low-maintenance

The coat continues growing and can trap loose hair close to the skin. Fleece and wool coats may look tidy on the surface while developing tight mats underneath, especially around the ears, armpits, collar, legs, tail, and harness area.

Run a comb all the way down to the skin rather than relying only on a surface brush. If the comb cannot pass through, the coat is already tangled. Severe mats can pull on the skin, restrict movement, conceal irritation, and make brushing painful. A professional groomer may need to clip a badly matted dog short.

Are Australian Labradoodles hypoallergenic?

No dog is guaranteed to be hypoallergenic. Allergic reactions may involve proteins in dander, saliva, and fur, and people respond differently to individual dogs. A low-shedding coat may reduce the amount of loose hair moving around a home, so some allergy sufferers tolerate certain Australian Labradoodles better than other dogs. It is not a guarantee.

Do not assume that a curly coat is automatically safer than a wavy fleece coat. That claim has not been established by the breed standards. Before committing, an allergy sufferer should spend meaningful time with the specific adult dog or puppy and discuss serious symptoms with an allergist. A breeder who promises an “allergy-free” puppy is making a claim the evidence does not support.

Temperament

Breed standards describe the Australian Labradoodle as social, people-oriented, intelligent, intuitive, trainable, and eager to interact with humans and other animals. A well-bred dog will often enjoy reward-based training and close involvement in family life.

That does not make every Australian Labradoodle calm, easy, or suitable for every household. Individual temperament is influenced by genetics, early development, socialization, training, health, and environment. Fearful, timid, highly strung, or uncontrollably aggressive behavior is inconsistent with the desired temperament; WALA lists uncontrollable aggression as a major fault.

Many Australian Labradoodles are highly social and may struggle if left without enough companionship, exercise, or mental activity. Boredom can appear as barking, chewing, jumping, attention-seeking, or destructive behavior. A family dog still needs a daily routine that includes exercise, play, training, and social enrichment.

Exercise and training needs

Exercise requirements vary by size, age, health, and individual energy level, but this is not a decorative or completely sedentary dog. Daily walks are useful, yet many dogs also need interactive play, short training sessions, sniffing opportunities, or an appropriate canine activity such as agility.

Training usually works best when it is consistent, reward-based, and started early. Focus on:

  • polite greetings instead of jumping;
  • loose-leash walking;
  • recall and emergency cues;
  • settling on a mat or bed;
  • handling for brushing, ear care, nail trimming, and veterinary examinations;
  • gradual, positive exposure to people, dogs, surfaces, noises, grooming, and being alone.

Do not use the breed’s reputation for friendliness as a substitute for socialization. A puppy still needs carefully managed experiences, and an adult dog still needs boundaries and training.

Grooming

Plan for ongoing coat care throughout the dog’s life. The exact schedule depends on coat texture, length, lifestyle, and the style of clipping, but occasional brushing is not enough for most Australian Labradoodles.

  1. Brush in sections so the coat is separated down to the skin.
  2. Use a comb to check the ears, armpits, legs, collar area, tail, and harness contact points.
  3. Check the coat after swimming, bathing, outdoor play, or wearing clothing or equipment.
  4. Arrange regular professional grooming or learn thorough home grooming from a qualified professional.
  5. Keep up with nail trimming, ear care, dental care, and routine veterinary examinations.

Bathing a matted coat can make tangles tighter. If you find extensive mats, do not force a brush through them or cut close to the skin with household scissors; ask a groomer or veterinarian for help.

Health and recommended testing

No health-testing program can guarantee a disease-free puppy, but responsible breeding requires more than a general statement that the parents are “healthy.” The breeder should identify each test, the testing organization, the date, the result, and the dog’s registered name or permanent identification.

ALAA’s current minimum requirements for breeding dogs include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • hip evaluation;
  • elbow evaluation;
  • exercise-induced collapse (EIC) testing;
  • progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) testing;
  • a DNA profile for each dog before breeding.

ALAA’s higher-level voluntary programs add or recommend veterinary ophthalmologist eye examinations, patellar evaluation, thyroid testing, von Willebrand disease testing, cardiac evaluation, and appropriate OFA or PennHIP hip and elbow results. WALA breeder requirements also include hip and elbow clearances and a DNA profile, with enhanced testing that references EIC, PRA/prcd, eye, patellar, cardiac, and other genetic evaluations.

A DNA profile confirms identity or parentage within the relevant system; it does not by itself prove that a dog is free from disease. Commercial breed-DNA tests also cannot independently establish Australian Labradoodle pedigree, because the breed is not AKC-recognized and does not have a dedicated commercial breed test. For lineage, documented registry records matter more than a consumer DNA report.

Merle and color marketing

Merle is restricted by major Australian Labradoodle organizations. ALAA does not accept merle under its breeding standard: merle-pattern dogs may be registered for identification purposes but are placed on limited registration and must not be bred. WALA identifies merle-to-merle breeding as a major fault that should not be bred.

The wording is not identical across organizations, so ask the breeder which registry’s rules apply. Treat unusual color as a reason to investigate health testing and breeding decisions—not as evidence of superior quality. Color should never outweigh temperament, structure, health records, and breeder accountability.

How to choose an Australian Labradoodle breeder

Start by deciding whether your household can manage a growing, easily tangled coat and an active, people-focused dog. Then verify the breeder rather than relying on photographs, testimonials, association logos, or labels such as “hypoallergenic” and “multigenerational.”

A responsible breeder should be willing to show:

  • the relevant association registration and pedigree information;
  • the registered names and permanent identification of both parents;
  • verifiable hip and elbow results;
  • EIC and PRA results, or documented clear-by-parentage status where accepted;
  • current eye examination results if claimed;
  • DNA identification profiles;
  • a written contract and health guarantee;
  • vaccination, deworming, veterinary examination, and puppy-raising records;
  • specific information about socialization and early handling;
  • a plan for support or rehoming if you can no longer keep the dog.

WALA requires its breeder members to provide at least a two-year health guarantee. ALAA’s code of ethics requires members not to misrepresent allergy-friendliness and to provide care information and rehoming assistance. Those are obligations for members of those organizations, not universal legal requirements for everyone advertising an Australian Labradoodle.

Association membership is useful background, but it is not a guarantee that an individual breeder is excellent or that a puppy will reach a particular size, keep a particular coat, or avoid every health problem. Ask to see the actual parents’ records and clarify what the contract covers.

Who is this dog suited to?

An Australian Labradoodle may suit a household looking for a sociable, trainable companion that participates in family activities and is willing to commit to regular grooming. Its low-shedding coat can also be worth considering for some people who tolerate individual low-shedding dogs better.

“It is just a Labrador–Poodle mix.” It is generally described as a multigenerational dog incorporating Labrador, Poodle, and Cocker Spaniel ancestry, although registry definitions differ.
“Every Australian Labradoodle is non-shedding.” Many multigenerational dogs are low-shedding, but early generations and individual dogs may shed.
“It is hypoallergenic.” No dog is completely allergy-free; tolerance varies between people and individual dogs.
“A curly coat is safer for allergy sufferers.” There is no established guarantee that curly is more allergy-friendly than fleece.
“There is one official size chart.” ALAA, WALA, and other organizations publish different ranges.
“A DNA breed test proves the pedigree.” Documented registry pedigree and parent records are the relevant evidence; commercial tests cannot independently establish Australian Labradoodle lineage.
“Low-shedding means low-maintenance.” The coat keeps growing and needs regular brushing, combing, and grooming.

FAQ

How much does an Australian Labradoodle shed?

Many multigenerational Australian Labradoodles shed very little, particularly those with fleece or wool coats. However, early-generation dogs and some individuals may shed noticeably. Low-shedding is not the same as no shedding.

Are Australian Labradoodles good family dogs?

They can be excellent family companions when well-bred, socialized, trained, exercised, and groomed. They are people-focused and often active, so they are not automatically suitable for a family that wants a quiet, low-maintenance dog.

How often does an Australian Labradoodle need grooming?

The schedule depends on coat type, length, lifestyle, and the clip chosen. Expect regular thorough brushing and combing plus routine professional grooming or clipping. Check friction areas and the coat down to the skin so hidden mats do not develop.

What is the difference between an Australian Labradoodle and a Labradoodle?

A Labradoodle usually means a Labrador Retriever–Poodle cross. An Australian Labradoodle is a multigenerational breeding program whose registry definitions generally include Labrador, Poodle, and Cocker Spaniel ancestry, with some organizations describing additional historical ancestry.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can Australian Labradoodles be left alone?

Some can learn to remain alone comfortably, but the breed’s social nature means this should be taught gradually. Long, unstructured isolation can contribute to distress, barking, chewing, or other unwanted behavior.

Is the Australian Labradoodle recognized by the AKC?

No. It is maintained through private and international organizations such as ALAA and WALA rather than being listed as an AKC-recognized breed.

What health tests should an Australian Labradoodle breeder provide?

At minimum, ask for verifiable hip and elbow evaluations, EIC and PRA testing, and a DNA identity profile for each breeding dog. Stronger programs may also include veterinary ophthalmologist eye examinations, patella, thyroid, von Willebrand disease, and cardiac evaluations.

The Bottom Line

The Australian Labradoodle is best understood as a multigenerational, registry-maintained companion dog with a generally social temperament and a low-shedding but demanding coat. It may be a rewarding choice for an active household prepared to train, exercise, and groom it consistently.

Do not buy one on the promises of “hypoallergenic,” “non-shedding,” guaranteed adult size, or a fashionable color. Verify the registry pedigree, inspect the parents’ health records, meet the dogs in person, and choose a breeder who remains accountable after the puppy goes home.
