An Australian Shepherd Lab mix—often called an Aussiedor—is a cross between an Australian Shepherd and a Labrador Retriever. It is not a standardized breed, so adult size, coat, energy level, and temperament can vary considerably, even among puppies from the same litter.
This mix can be an excellent companion for an active household that enjoys training and outdoor activities. It can also be a difficult match for a sedentary home: both parent breeds are intelligent working or sporting dogs, and boredom may show up as barking, chewing, herding, jumping, digging, or obsessive behavior.

Possible coat colors include black, chocolate, yellow, red, blue merle, red merle, and combinations with white or tan markings. Some have the Australian Shepherd’s merle pattern or white markings; others have a solid Labrador-like coat. Eye color can also vary.
Coat texture ranges from a short, dense Labrador-style coat to a medium-length coat with feathering around the legs, chest, tail, and ears. Both parent breeds shed, so this is not a reliably low-shedding mix. A merle coat is not a health guarantee, and merle-to-merle breeding can create serious vision and hearing risks in puppies.
Temperament and behavior
Aussiedors are often bright, people-oriented, playful, and eager to participate. Their Labrador side may contribute sociability, retrieving ability, food motivation, and enthusiasm for water. Their Australian Shepherd side may contribute intense focus, environmental awareness, responsiveness, and a tendency to control movement.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThat combination is not predictable enough to label every dog as friendly, protective, calm, or naturally obedient. Some are outgoing with strangers; others are reserved. Some happily greet every dog; others need careful introductions. Behavior comes from inherited traits as well as early development, socialization, learning history, health, and the environment.
Herding behavior is a possibility. An Aussiedor may circle, stare, chase, heel-nip, or bark at running children, cyclists, cats, or other dogs. This should be managed with training rather than treated as a harmless quirk. A large, excited dog can knock over a child even without aggressive intent.
Exercise requirements
Most adult Aussiedors need substantial daily activity, but there is no scientifically fixed exercise quota for the mix. A young, healthy dog from energetic working lines may need much more activity than an older or less driven individual.

Useful outlets include:
- Brisk walks and hikes
- Retrieving and swimming
- Obedience and trick training
- Scent games and tracking
- Agility or rally, once physically mature
- Structured play with rest breaks
- Food puzzles and safe chew items
Exercise should not consist only of throwing a ball until the dog is exhausted. Repetitive, high-impact activity can aggravate developing joints or keep an excitable dog permanently overstimulated. Teach the dog to settle on a mat, relax in a crate or pen, and transition from activity to rest.

Avoid forcing repetitive jumping, sharp turns, or long-distance running while the puppy is growing. Ask a veterinarian for advice if the puppy is unusually large, lame, reluctant to move, or gaining weight rapidly.
Training and socialization
This mix can learn quickly, which is helpful—but it also means it can learn unwanted habits quickly. Begin with reward-based training as soon as the puppy comes home. Food, toys, play, access to sniffing, and praise can all reinforce useful behavior.
- Teach attention and name recognition. Reward the dog for looking at you, especially around distractions.
- Build reliable life skills. Prioritize recall, loose-leash walking, “leave it,” “drop it,” waiting at doors, and calm greetings.
- Prevent rehearsal of herding and chasing. Use gates, a leash, long line, and distance around bicycles, livestock, cats, and running children.
- Practice handling. Pair touching paws, ears, mouth, tail, and coat with treats.
- Train calm behavior. Reward lying quietly, settling after play, and choosing a bed instead of jumping.
- Socialize carefully. Introduce people, surfaces, sounds, vehicles, friendly dogs, grooming, and new places at a pace the puppy can handle.
Socialization does not require greeting everyone. A well-socialized dog can notice a stranger or another dog without panicking, lunging, or demanding contact. Forced exposure can increase fear, so use distance and positive associations when a puppy is overwhelmed.
Grooming and shedding
Plan for regular brushing and dog hair around the home. A short-coated dog may need a weekly brushing routine, while a longer or denser coat may need brushing several times a week, particularly behind the ears, in the “pants,” around the tail, and during seasonal shedding.
Check the coat after hikes for burrs, ticks, and mats. Trim nails before they become long enough to alter the dog’s gait, brush teeth with dog-safe toothpaste, and inspect the ears regularly. Labrador-type ears can retain moisture, especially after swimming, so dry them and seek veterinary advice for persistent odor, redness, discharge, or head shaking.

Health concerns
A mixed-breed dog can inherit health problems associated with either parent. Important issues to discuss with a veterinarian include:
- Hip and elbow dysplasia: These orthopedic conditions can cause pain, lameness, and arthritis.
- Eye disease: Australian Shepherd lines may carry inherited eye conditions, while Labradors also have breed-associated eye disorders.
- Inherited neurologic disease: Some Australian Shepherd and Labrador lines carry genetic risks such as degenerative myelopathy or other breed-associated disorders.
- Exercise-related problems: Labrador lines may carry the variant associated with exercise-induced collapse.
- Epilepsy: Seizure disorders occur in both parent breeds and may have genetic and non-genetic causes.
- Obesity: Food motivation and easy access to treats can lead to excess weight, which increases stress on joints.
- Medication sensitivity: Some Australian Shepherds and related herding breeds carry an MDR1 variant that affects responses to certain drugs. A veterinarian can advise whether testing is appropriate.
Ask a breeder for specific health records rather than accepting “vet checked” as a complete answer. A puppy examination confirms the puppy’s condition on that day; it does not replace screening the parents’ hips, elbows, eyes, heart, and relevant genetic risks.
Feeding an Australian Shepherd Lab mix
Feed a complete, balanced diet appropriate for the dog’s life stage and expected adult size. Puppies that are likely to become large should be managed with a diet and feeding plan suitable for controlled growth. Do not add calcium or other supplements unless a veterinarian recommends them.
Use the food label as a starting point, then adjust according to body condition, growth, activity, and veterinary advice. Measure meals rather than leaving food available all day, especially for a food-driven Labrador cross. Treats should be included in the daily calorie plan.
You should be able to feel the ribs under a thin covering of fat and see a waist from above. Ask a veterinarian to assess body condition if you are unsure; a dog’s scale weight alone does not show whether it is overweight.

Is an Aussiedor a good family dog?
It can be, if the family can manage a strong, energetic dog and provide supervision. The mix may suit older children who understand how to behave around dogs, but no child should be left unsupervised with a large, excitable dog. Teach children not to climb on, hug, disturb, chase, or take food from the dog.
Compatibility with cats, poultry, livestock, and other dogs depends on the individual’s prey drive, herding tendencies, social history, and training. Meet an adult rescue dog in several situations when possible, and ask specifically about chasing, guarding, handling, children, and time spent alone.
Finding a responsible breeder
Because the cross has no official breed standard, quality varies widely. A responsible breeder should be able to:
- Let you meet the mother and explain the father’s temperament and health.
- Provide verifiable hip, elbow, eye, and relevant genetic testing for both parents.
- Explain whether merle is present and avoid merle-to-merle pairings.
- Raise puppies in a clean environment with appropriate handling and enrichment.
- Discuss exercise, grooming, training, and likely adult size honestly.
- Use a contract requiring the dog to be returned or assisted if the owner can no longer keep it.
Be cautious of anyone promising that every puppy will be hypoallergenic, non-shedding, perfectly calm, or guaranteed to have the “best traits” of both breeds. A commercial DNA test may provide ancestry estimates, but it cannot guarantee adult appearance, behavior, or future health.
Adopting an Australian Shepherd Lab mix
Shelters and rescues may use “Australian Shepherd mix,” “Lab mix,” or “Aussiedor” as an informed estimate. Visual breed labels are not proof of parentage, particularly when a dog has unknown history. For an adopted dog, observed behavior and household compatibility matter more than the label.

FAQ
How big will an Australian Shepherd Lab mix get?
There is no standardized adult size. Many are medium to large, but the result depends on the parents, sex, lineage, and individual genetics. Meeting both parents and reviewing their adult sizes gives a better estimate than relying on the mix’s name.
Do Australian Shepherd Lab mixes shed?
Yes. Both parent breeds shed, and an Aussiedor should generally be expected to shed at least moderately. Coat length and shedding intensity vary, but this is not a reliably hypoallergenic or low-shedding mix.
Are Aussiedors easy to train?
Many are quick learners and respond well to reward-based training. Their intelligence can also produce unwanted habits if they are bored or inconsistent training allows jumping, chasing, barking, or herding to become rewarding.
Recommended Free Tools
Can an Australian Shepherd Lab mix live in an apartment?
Apartment living is possible for some individuals, but the dog still needs a daily plan for physical activity, mental enrichment, training, toilet breaks, and rest. A yard alone does not meet those needs, and a yard is not essential if the owner provides suitable outlets.
Are Aussiedors good with children?
Some are excellent family companions, but this is not guaranteed. Their size, energy, jumping, mouthing, herding, and chasing can be difficult for young children. Supervise every interaction and teach both the dog and children appropriate behavior.
What should I ask an Aussiedor breeder for?
Request the registered names and verifiable results for the parents’ hip, elbow, eye, heart, and relevant genetic tests. Also ask about merle genetics, temperament, adult size, puppy socialization, and the breeder’s return policy.
The Bottom Line
An Australian Shepherd Lab mix can be an affectionate, athletic, highly trainable dog, but it is not a predictable standardized breed. Expect shedding, significant exercise and training needs, and variation in sociability, herding behavior, coat, and adult size. The best match is an owner prepared to manage an intelligent working-type dog—not someone choosing the mix solely for its appearance or a promise of perfect traits.
