Cavachons are affectionate Cavalier–Bichon crosses, but their coat, size, shedding, and temperament are not predictable. Here is what owners should know about grooming, training, separation, allergies, and parent health testing.

A Cavachon is a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel–Bichon Frise cross. It is usually affectionate, sociable, playful, and eager to be near its people—but it is not a standardized breed with predictable adult traits. One Cavachon may have a silky, straight coat, while another from the same litter may develop a wavier or loosely curly coat. Size, shedding, energy, and temperament can vary as well.

This is a companion dog that generally needs daily interaction, regular grooming, reward-based training, and careful attention to health risks from both parent breeds. It may suit an involved household, but it is a poor choice for someone seeking a highly independent, guaranteed non-shedding, or reliably all-day-alone dog.

Cavachon characteristics at a glance

Characteristic What to expect
Parent breeds Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and Bichon Frise
Breed status Mixed-breed companion dog with no universally accepted breed standard
Coat Straight, silky, wavy, or loosely curly; individual coats vary
Shedding Often lower-shedding than many dogs, but not reliably non-shedding
Grooming Usually daily brushing, with professional grooming often needed about every six weeks
Exercise Daily walks, sniffing, play, training, and other enrichment
Social needs High; many struggle with long periods alone
AKC registration Not eligible for full AKC registration; may participate through Canine Partners in many companion and performance events

There is no official Cavachon standard establishing a fixed adult height, weight, lifespan, coat, or temperament. Treat advertised figures as estimates rather than promises. The parents’ size, genetics, breeding generation, early experiences, and general health all influence the puppy you bring home.

Appearance and coat

Cavachons commonly have a soft, appealing expression and a coat that combines features of the Cavalier and Bichon. However, the cross does not produce one uniform look. Coats may be:

The Bichon parent contributes a continuously growing coat, while the Cavalier parent has a silky coat that sheds. As a result, one Cavachon may leave relatively little hair around the home, while another sheds noticeably more. “Low-shedding” does not mean “no shedding,” and it does not make the dog hypoallergenic.

Grooming routine

Plan on daily brushing, particularly around the ears, armpits, chest, tail, and legs. These areas tangle quickly, and mats can hide irritated skin, parasites, or small injuries. A slicker brush and a metal comb are useful for checking that you have brushed through to the skin rather than only smoothing the surface.

A professional grooming appointment roughly every six weeks is a practical starting point. The correct interval depends on coat texture, length, brushing routine, and the style you choose. A short clip may be easier to maintain than a long, feathered coat, but it does not eliminate the need for brushing and skin checks.

Regular care should also include:

  • Checking and cleaning the ears as advised by your veterinarian
  • Wiping beneath the eyes when discharge or tear staining occurs
  • Trimming the nails before they become overgrown
  • Brushing the teeth and arranging veterinary dental checks
  • Inspecting the skin for redness, lumps, parasites, and painful areas

Temperament

Cavachons are generally kept as affectionate companion dogs. Many enjoy sitting close to their owners, following people from room to room, and participating in ordinary household activities. They are often playful, food-motivated, bright, and responsive to training.

Those qualities do not guarantee a particular personality. Genetics, early handling, socialization, health, training, and the home environment all matter. A puppy that is confident and friendly at eight weeks may still need carefully managed exposure to new experiences as it matures.

Potential behavior problems

The same social nature that makes Cavachons appealing can create difficulties if their needs are overlooked. Possible problems include:

  • Barking when bored, nervous, frustrated, ignored, or left alone
  • Chewing or destruction linked to separation-related distress
  • Fear of unfamiliar people after rushed or overwhelming introductions
  • Difficulty settling when the dog receives constant attention but has not learned independent relaxation
  • Fear-based defensive behavior, including snapping or aggression

Do not let every stranger approach and handle a Cavachon puppy. A puppy that is repeatedly crowded, picked up, or passed around may learn that unfamiliar people are frightening. Calm observation from a comfortable distance, followed by treats and gradual interaction, is safer and more useful.

Are Cavachons good with children and other pets?

They can live successfully with children, dogs, and other pets when introductions, supervision, and socialization are handled well. This is not the same as saying that every Cavachon will tolerate rough play, chasing, grabbing, or being carried around.

Children should be taught to:

  • Leave the dog alone while it is eating, sleeping, or resting
  • Avoid hugging, cornering, or restraining the dog
  • Never take food, chews, or toys away without adult guidance
  • Use calm hands and voices
  • Allow the dog to move away from an interaction

Adults should supervise interactions rather than expecting the dog or child to manage the situation alone. Introduce other pets gradually, use barriers when needed, and provide each animal with a separate resting and feeding area.

Exercise and mental stimulation

A Cavachon needs regular daily activity, but it is not generally a dog for sustained, strenuous hiking. The right amount depends on the individual dog’s age, health, fitness, and temperament. Several moderate activities are usually more useful than one exhausting session.

Good outlets include:

  • Walks at the dog’s pace
  • Sniffing walks in safe areas
  • Fetch and toy games
  • Secure off-leash play where permitted
  • Food puzzles and activity feeders
  • Short reward-based training sessions
  • Scent games, such as finding treats hidden around a room
  • Calm visits to suitable dog-friendly places

Mental enrichment matters as much as physical exercise. A dog that receives a brisk walk but spends the rest of the day bored may still bark, chew, or pester people. Rotate toys, scatter part of the daily food ration for supervised searching, and teach behaviors such as going to a mat, touching a hand, and settling quietly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An apartment or small home can work if the Cavachon receives regular toilet breaks, exercise, enrichment, grooming, and company. Square footage alone does not determine whether the arrangement is suitable.

Training and socialization

Many Cavachons are motivated by food and respond well to reward-based training. Keep sessions short—several two- to five-minute sessions are often more productive than one long lesson—and reward the behavior you want repeated. Punishment can increase fear and does not teach the dog what to do instead.

Prioritize these skills:

  1. Name recognition and coming when called
  2. Toilet training
  3. Loose-leash walking
  4. Calm greetings
  5. Settling on a bed or mat
  6. Being comfortable with brushing, ear checks, nail trims, and veterinary handling
  7. Gradual alone-time training
  8. Bite inhibition and appropriate play
  9. “Leave it” and “drop it”
  10. Comfort around cars, household noises, bicycles, visitors, and grooming equipment

Socialization means controlled exposure, not forcing a puppy into every available experience. Let the puppy notice a bicycle, child, dog, or vacuum from a distance where it can still eat treats and remain relaxed. Increase the challenge gradually. If the puppy freezes, hides, lunges, or refuses food, the situation is too intense and you should create more distance.

Can Cavachons be left alone?

Do not assume a Cavachon can routinely stay alone for a full workday. Its companion-dog background means separation-related barking, destruction, house-soiling, pacing, or panic are important risks to consider.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start alone-time training with very short absences while the dog is calm, then increase duration gradually. Avoid jumping from a few minutes to several hours. If you work away from home, plan for support such as:

  • A midday dog walker or sitter
  • A carefully selected daycare arrangement, if the individual dog enjoys daycare
  • Safe food puzzles and enrichment
  • A gradual separation program
  • Help from a veterinarian or qualified behavior professional if distress develops

A crate can provide a safe resting space, but it is not a treatment for separation anxiety. Confined distress for extended periods can make the problem worse and risks injury.

Health concerns

A Cavachon can inherit health risks associated with either parent breed. Being a crossbreed does not remove inherited disease. Relevant concerns include:

  • Mitral valve disease
  • Luxating patella
  • Progressive retinal atrophy
  • Hip dysplasia
  • Cushing disease
  • Syringomyelia

These are risk considerations, not a prediction that an individual dog will develop all—or any—of them.

Cavalier-related screening

Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are associated with eye disease, patellar luxation, hip dysplasia, middle-ear infections, mitral valve disease, and syringomyelia. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Club, USA recommends that breeding dogs receive cardiac clearance by a board-certified veterinary cardiologist, an examination by a board-certified veterinary ophthalmologist, patella evaluation, and hip evaluation submitted to the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals. Its cardiac guideline specifies a minimum cardiology clearance age of 2.5 years.

Bichon-related screening

The Bichon Frise parent club recommends, at minimum, eye, hip, and patella testing for breeding dogs. Bichons may also have skin and dental problems, so a breeder should be able to explain the family’s history rather than presenting the cross as automatically healthier.

What health records should a breeder provide?

Ask for verifiable records for both parents. “Vet checked” and “DNA tested” are not sufficient descriptions of a complete health program.

Parent Records to request
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Cardiac examination, ophthalmologist examination, patella evaluation, and hip evaluation
Bichon Frise Eye examination, hip evaluation, and patella evaluation

Use the OFA database where applicable. A CHIC number means that the required breed-specific tests were completed and made publicly available; it does not mean that every result was normal. Health testing reduces uncertainty but cannot guarantee that a puppy will never develop disease.

Is a Cavachon hypoallergenic?

No dog is guaranteed hypoallergenic, and the Cavachon is no exception. The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology explains that reactions may be triggered by proteins in dander, skin flakes, saliva, or urine—not simply by visible hair.

A lower-shedding Cavachon may be easier for some people to tolerate, but responses differ between both dogs and people. If allergies are significant, spend time with the specific dog and consult an allergist before committing. Allergy testing with an allergist is the most reliable way to identify relevant triggers.

Feeding and veterinary care

Feed a complete and balanced diet suitable for the dog’s life stage. Adjust portions for age, activity, body condition, and veterinary advice. Cavachons are often food-motivated, which makes treats useful in training but also makes overfeeding easy. Include treats in the daily calorie allowance and check body condition regularly instead of relying on an advertised “ideal” weight for this non-standardized cross.

Routine veterinary care should include examinations, vaccination according to local guidance, parasite prevention, dental assessment, and a preventive-care plan. Cavalier ancestry makes cardiac monitoring particularly important.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Arrange prompt veterinary evaluation for:

  • Coughing, fainting, reduced stamina, or breathing changes
  • Limping, reluctance to jump or climb, or intermittent hind-leg skipping
  • Eye changes or apparent vision problems
  • Persistent scratching, inflamed skin, or recurring ear problems
  • Neck pain, unusual sensitivity, altered gait, or other neurologic signs
  • Severe distress when left alone

Who is a Cavachon a good match for?

A Cavachon may suit someone who wants a small, affectionate companion and can provide daily interaction, coat care, enrichment, and training. It can work well for a household that values an involved relationship with its dog and is prepared to manage introductions carefully.

FAQ

Is a Cavachon a recognized dog breed?

No. A Cavachon is a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel–Bichon Frise cross and does not have a universally accepted breed standard. The AKC does not offer full registration for mixed-breed dogs, although Cavachons may be eligible for its Canine Partners program.

Do Cavachons shed?

They often shed less than heavily shedding breeds, but shedding varies. Their coats may be silky, straight, wavy, or loosely curly, and no Cavachon is guaranteed to be non-shedding.

How often does a Cavachon need grooming?

Daily brushing is commonly needed to prevent mats. Professional grooming about every six weeks is a practical starting point, although short trims, coat texture, and the owner’s brushing routine can change that schedule.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can Cavachons live in apartments?

Yes, provided they receive regular toilet breaks, daily exercise, mental enrichment, grooming, and companionship. A small home is not automatically a problem; lack of activity and prolonged isolation are more important concerns.

Are Cavachons good family dogs?

They can be good family companions when children are taught to interact calmly and adults supervise. They should not be expected to tolerate rough handling, hugging, chasing, cornering, or having food and toys taken away.

How long can a Cavachon be left alone?

There is no universal safe number of hours, but you should not assume a Cavachon can handle a full workday alone. Build alone time gradually and arrange a walker, sitter, or other support if the dog will otherwise be isolated for long periods.

What health tests should Cavachon parents have?

For the Cavalier parent, ask for cardiac, eye, patella, and hip evaluations. For the Bichon parent, ask for eye, hip, and patella evaluations. Request actual records and check relevant results through the OFA database where available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

The Cavachon is a variable companion-dog cross, not a standardized breed with guaranteed size, coat, shedding, or temperament. Its main demands are close companionship, daily grooming, regular enrichment, gradual socialization, and responsible health planning for risks inherited from both parent breeds. Choose documented screening and a transparent breeder over promises that a puppy will be hypoallergenic, unusually healthy, or perfectly predictable.
