The right automatic cat feeder depends on what you feed, how many meals you need to schedule, and whether one pet must be kept away from another’s food. For scheduled dry kibble, compare hopper capacity, portion controls and reliability; for wet food or a small number of timed servings, look at dish-style models; and for food theft or separate diets, consider access control rather than a large hopper.
The picks below are review-source candidates, not a single independently verified ranking. Catster’s 2026 roundup names the Cat Mate C3000 its overall pick, while Cats.com highlights different use cases. Canadian prices, stock, warranties and exact local model variants are not established here, so confirm those details for the specific listing before buying.

How to choose an automatic cat feeder
Start with the feeding task, not the longest feature list. A hopper feeder dispenses measured dry-food portions on a schedule; a dish-style feeder exposes a limited number of meals; a microchip feeder controls which pet can reach a dish. Those functions are not interchangeable.
Recommended Free Tools
- Food: Hopper models generally target kibble. Dish-style units may accommodate wet food, but check the instructions for the exact model and food type.
- Schedule and portions: Check how many meals can be scheduled each day, the smallest portion increment, and whether individual meals can differ in size.
- Capacity: A large hopper can hold more food than a small multi-compartment tray, but capacity alone does not make it safe to leave a cat unattended for an extended trip.
- Household: If another pet steals meals, consider access control. Check whether a model reads an implanted microchip, uses a collar tag, or both.
- Power and connectivity: Confirm what happens during an outage and whether battery operation preserves the features you need. Connected functions may not behave like basic dispensing when power or connectivity is lost.
- Upkeep and reliability: Consider how the bowl and food-contact parts are cleaned, and look for reported concerns with noise or moving parts.

Eight feeder candidates, matched to the job
These models are organized by use case rather than treated as a universal ranking. Catster and Cats.com make different picks, and neither source’s recommendation establishes that a model will suit every cat or household.
| Model | Best fit to consider | What the reviewed source reports | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cat Mate C3000 | Scheduled dry-food portions | Catster names it its overall pick and reports a 5 lb hopper, programmable meals and frequent-feed mode. | Catster says the controls are individually adjustable, but notes buttons can be difficult to press and dispensing noise may frighten some cats. |
| Van Ness Auto Feeder | Value-oriented hopper option | Catster describes it as easier to use, large-capacity and comparatively inexpensive. | Current Canadian price and exact model variant were not verified. |
| SureFeed Microchip Pet Feeder | Keeping one pet out of another pet’s food | Catster presents it as a multi-cat option and says it works with varieties of cat microchips. Cats.com describes microchip feeders as useful for separate diets or food stealing. | It controls access to a dish; it is not a large scheduled hopper. Confirm chip or tag compatibility for your pet and the specific model. |
| PetSafe Healthy Pet Simply Feed | Frequent, small scheduled meals | Catster recommends it for kittens and says it can provide small portions up to 12 times a day. | That is the review’s recommendation, not a health outcome. Ask a veterinarian about schedules for a cat with a medical condition. |
| Arf Pets Automatic Cat Feeder | Feature-rich hopper candidate | Catster’s comparison mentions a large hopper, battery or plug power, a low-food alarm and voice recording. | Verify the current Canadian SKU and its features before buying. |
| Cat Mate C20 | A couple of timed wet- or dry-food servings | Catster describes two bowls and an ice pack, with wet- or dry-food use. | Catster reports that the timer doors may fail to open reliably. Treat this as that review’s finding, not proof of a defect in every unit. |
| Cat Mate C500 | Limited timed servings, including wet food | Cats.com lists it as a budget pick and describes dish-style feeders as useful for a limited number of scheduled meals. | A dish-style feeder has inherently more limited meal capacity than a hopper; check the exact food instructions. |
| Another access-control feeder suited to your cat’s chip or tag | Multi-pet food separation when the SureFeed model is not a fit | Cats.com identifies microchip feeders as a category for separate diets and food theft. | The reviewed evidence does not establish another named model’s specifications or Canadian price. Verify compatibility and local details rather than assuming all access-control feeders work alike. |
Which type suits your feeding routine?
For dry kibble on a regular schedule
Begin with the Cat Mate C3000 if you want programmable dry-food portions and frequent feeding; its overall-pick designation comes from Catster’s roundup. Compare the hopper’s capacity with your cat’s actual daily intake, then check the portion increments and schedule controls in the instructions for the Canadian model. The Van Ness and Arf Pets candidates may also suit a hopper-based routine, but current Canadian variants and details need confirmation.
Rank #2
- 【Timed & Portion Control】 Program up to 6 meals a day with precise portion sizes to keep your pet healthy and prevent overeating.
For many small meals
Catster says the PetSafe Healthy Pet Simply Feed can schedule up to 12 small portions per day and recommends it for kittens. Meal frequency and portion size still need to match the individual cat. For obesity, digestive difficulties or diabetes, do not use a feeder feature as a substitute for a veterinary feeding plan; Catster specifically advises consulting a veterinarian to devise a schedule for a diabetic cat.

A dish-style feeder is the relevant category when you need a limited number of timed servings rather than repeated kibble dispensing. The Cat Mate C500 is a Cats.com budget pick in this category. Catster describes the C20 as a two-bowl option with an ice pack for wet or dry food, but also reports a door-opening reliability concern. Check exact manufacturer instructions for food suitability and decide whether that reported mechanism issue is acceptable for your routine.
Rank #3

- Peaceful Mealtime for 2 Cats:The bowls are placed opposite with an 16-inch distance. It creates a comfortable space for each cat to eat same amount of food. Avoid queuing or fighting
- 5 L/20 Cups Capacity: A full tank of dry food allows 2 adult cats to eat for 10 days. You don’t need to ask neighbors or pet sisters to feed your pets when you go away for weekend or vacation
- 10 s Voice Recorder: You can record a 10 s calling message. The feeder would play the audio before each meal
- Precise Portion control:1 Portion ≈ 10 Grams ≈ 1/12 Cup. Allowed kibble size less than 0.5 inch. Up to 6 meals a day. The portion means the kibble amount of each bowl
For food theft or separate diets
A microchip feeder answers “which pet can eat this?” rather than “how much food is dispensed at each scheduled meal?” SureFeed is the named access-control candidate here. Check whether your cat’s implanted chip is supported or whether a collar tag is required, and consider whether all pets can reach the bowl without blocking one another.
For phone control, camera or voice features
Smart features are optional for basic scheduled feeding. The Canada-specific Toolsmarts comparison discusses Wi-Fi and camera models and reports that battery backup may preserve basic dispensing while app or camera functions fail. That observation applies to the models it selected, not every feeder. Verify the outage behavior and connectivity requirements of the exact model you are considering.

What the reviews establish—and what they do not
Catster’s 2026 Canada-focused roundup supplies the overall and value picks and reports the model-specific features and concerns above. Cats.com uses different picks; its guide displays a self-reported figure of 750 hours of research alongside 54 brands vetted and 13 features reviewed. Those are Cats.com’s stated figures, not an independently audited measure. Cats.com also says its current listed products were purchased at retail and tested by its team. The Canada-specific Toolsmarts comparison says its selected units were not physically tested.

Use a feeder as a scheduling aid, not a substitute for care
A feeder can reduce the need to serve each scheduled meal manually, but the reviewed sources do not establish a guarantee that food will dispense correctly every time or that a cat can safely be left alone for a long trip. Test the schedule while you are home, confirm the portion is appropriate, and check that food actually dispenses. Arrange someone to check on your cat during absences and respond if the device jams, loses power or the animal becomes unwell.
