Cat food “types” describe different things: how food is prepared, how much moisture it contains, whether it is complete for a life stage, or whether it is intended for a medical need. These categories overlap; they are not eight equivalent nutritional classes. Start by choosing food labeled complete and balanced for your cat’s life stage, then compare format, practicality, and your cat’s preferences.

How to choose among cat foods

Check the package for a nutritional adequacy statement saying the food is complete and balanced for the appropriate life stage. Cornell Feline Health Center says, “The nutritional claim on the cat food label should state the stage of a cat’s life cycle for which the food is complete and balanced, and that it meets the requirements of the AAFCO.” The format—dry, wet, or another preparation—does not by itself establish nutritional adequacy.

  • Life stage: Match the label to your cat’s needs, such as growth or adult maintenance. Kittens, adult cats, and pregnant or lactating cats can have different requirements.
  • Moisture and feeding routine: Consider how the format fits your cat’s preferences, household routine, portioning, and storage.
  • Medical needs: If your cat has a diagnosed condition, ask your veterinarian whether a therapeutic diet is appropriate.
  • Water: Keep fresh water available. This is especially important for cats eating only dry food, particularly those prone to lower urinary tract disease. Wet food’s moisture is not a promise that it will prevent urinary disease.

Eight types of cat food—and what each label means

1. Dry kibble

Dry food is commercially prepared, extruded, and dried. Cornell reports that dry food contains 6–10% water. It is relatively inexpensive and convenient to store, but check that the package says it is complete and balanced for your cat’s life stage. Store it in a cool, dry place, observe the expiration date, and use an airtight container to help preserve flavor and limit nutrient deterioration.

2. Canned or wet food

Canned food contains at least 75% moisture, according to Cornell. Wet food is generally highly palatable and can contribute water to the diet. Cornell’s feeding guidance describes wet food as typically about 70–80% water; the two descriptions refer to the same broad format, not a guarantee for every product. Refrigerate unused portions after opening. Some specialty canned products are not complete diets, so check the adequacy statement rather than assuming every can can serve as the sole food.

3. Semi-moist food

Semi-moist food contains approximately 35% moisture, according to Cornell. Packaging and formulation can make it convenient to serve, but it can dry out or become rancid after opening. Check the label to determine whether it is complete and balanced for your cat’s life stage.

4. Mixed wet-and-dry feeding

Combining wet and dry food is a feeding approach, not a separate nutrient class. Cornell notes that wet food can be fed in addition to or instead of dry food. Use complete-and-balanced foods and account for calories from both formats so the combined portions fit your cat’s feeding needs.

5. Life-stage formulas

“Kitten,” “growth,” “adult maintenance,” and “all life stages” describe nutritional suitability, not physical form. A life-stage claim can appear on dry or wet food. Follow the package statement for your cat’s stage rather than treating a format or marketing phrase as a substitute for it.

6. Therapeutic or veterinary-directed diets

These diets are intended to address particular clinical needs. The right choice depends on the cat’s diagnosis and veterinary advice; a general food list cannot determine which medical formula, if any, is appropriate. Ask your veterinarian before starting or changing a therapeutic diet.

7. Raw or gently cooked foods

Raw and gently cooked describe preparation, not whether a diet is nutritionally complete. Cornell says evidence for the touted benefits is lacking and warns of possible infectious hazards, including bacteria, viruses, and parasites that may affect cats and people. Its guidance is explicit: “we do not recommend feeding cats these diets.” This is Cornell’s general recommendation, not a claim that every individual product has been tested.

8. Homemade or home-prepared diets

Home-prepared food may be considered when a veterinarian recommends it, including for medical reasons, but recipes can miss required nutrient amounts or proportions. Work with your veterinarian and use a professionally formulated recipe; Cornell’s nutrition services describe formulating complete-and-balanced home diets to address medical needs. An unbalanced internet recipe is not a safe substitute for that guidance, and supplements are not routinely needed for a complete commercial food.

How the main formats compare

Format Reported moisture Practical considerations
Dry 6–10% Relatively inexpensive and convenient to store; keep cool and dry, and close it airtight.
Semi-moist Approximately 35% Can dry out or become rancid after opening.
Canned or wet At least 75%; wet food is typically about 70–80% Generally highly palatable; refrigerate unused opened portions. Cornell describes canned food as generally the most expensive format.

Moisture figures are format descriptions from Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, not measures of overall diet quality. Actual costs vary by product and location; the relative cost descriptions do not establish current prices.

Where treats fit

Treats are a related category, not necessarily a complete food. Cornell says treats are usually not nutritionally complete and balanced and should be occasional. Its rule of thumb is to keep treats to no more than 10–15% of daily calories.
