Avian Flu and Pet Birds: Exposure Risks, Warning Signs, and What to Do

Pet birds can be exposed to avian influenza through infected animals and contaminated environments. Learn how to prevent exposure, recognize nonspecific warning signs, and respond safely if illness follows contact.

Yes, a pet bird can be exposed to avian influenza, but that does not mean every companion bird is in immediate danger. The practical risk comes from contact with infected wild birds, poultry, cattle or other animals, sick or dead wildlife, and contaminated clothing, surfaces or outdoor areas. An infected pet could also expose a person, although the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says this is unlikely but possible.

Keep your bird separated from potentially infected animals and environments. If a bird has a plausible exposure and then becomes ill, call an avian veterinarian promptly and explain the exposure before transporting the bird. Symptoms alone cannot confirm avian influenza, because the signs listed by CDC occur with many other bird illnesses.

What avian flu means for a pet bird

Avian influenza, commonly called bird flu, is caused by influenza A viruses. These viruses circulate mainly among wild birds and domestic poultry, but some strains can infect mammals and pets. CDC specifically includes pet birds among animals that could be exposed and infected.

Exposure is possible when a companion bird encounters virus in an animal, its secretions or feces, or a contaminated environment. A bird does not need to be housed outdoors to have any risk: contaminated shoes, clothing, cages, carriers, equipment or surfaces can bring material indoors. At the same time, an indoor bird that has no plausible contact with those sources has a different exposure situation from a bird that visits an outdoor aviary or shares space with poultry. CDC has not published a probability for an individual household, species-specific rates for companion birds, or a precise indoor-versus-outdoor risk estimate.

The sensible response is neither panic nor dismissal. Treat a credible exposure seriously, reduce further contact, and involve a veterinarian if illness appears.

How a pet bird can be exposed

CDC describes several pathways. The table is a practical way to distinguish them; it is not a quantitative ranking, because CDC does not compare these circumstances with household-level numbers for pet birds.

Exposure circumstance How virus could reach the bird What to do
Contact with wild birds, backyard poultry, cattle or other outdoor animals Direct contact, respiratory particles, or secretions and feces left on shared areas, food, water or equipment Prevent contact. Move the bird, food and equipment away from outdoor animals and their areas.
Encounter with a sick or dead animal Touching, pecking, eating tissue, or contacting contaminated feathers, feces, saliva or respiratory secretions Keep the bird away and do not handle the carcass casually. Contact local animal-health authorities for instructions if a dead wild bird is involved.
Contaminated clothing, footwear, cages, carriers or surfaces Virus transported from an outdoor setting into the home or aviary Do not let the bird contact potentially contaminated items. Clean or handle them according to veterinary or public-health guidance.
Raw animal products or unpasteurized milk offered to pets Ingestion of contaminated material CDC advises not feeding pets raw pet food or unpasteurized milk.

Virus can move through infected secretions or feces, contaminated environments, and respiratory droplets or particles. A bird that merely lives in a home is not automatically infected; there must be a plausible route from a contaminated animal or material.

Can you catch bird flu from your pet bird?

Human infection after direct contact with an infected pet is unlikely, but it is possible. CDC’s March 7, 2025 guidance puts it plainly: “While it is unlikely that you would get sick with bird flu from direct contact with your infected pet, it is possible.” Rare animal-to-human infections have been reported, often after prolonged, unprotected exposure.

The important distinction is between possible and probable. Ordinary, brief handling of a healthy-appearing bird is not evidence that a person has been infected, and the existence of a possible route does not establish substantial risk in every household. Concern rises when a person has close, unprotected contact with a bird that may be infected, its respiratory secretions or feces, or a contaminated enclosure.

CDC’s general transmission page, dated April 23, 2025, described the risk to the general public from H5 bird flu as low at that time. That population-level assessment does not erase the need to respond carefully to a specific close exposure. Public-health advice can change as animal outbreaks and human cases change, so consult current CDC and local health-department updates when an actual exposure occurs.

Signs that should prompt veterinary attention

CDC lists the following general signs of illness in pets that could be associated with bird flu:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Fever
  • Fatigue or unusual inactivity
  • Reduced appetite
  • Reddened or inflamed eyes
  • Eye or nasal discharge
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Neurologic signs, including tremors, seizures, incoordination or blindness

This is a general pet symptom list, not a diagnostic checklist unique to parrots, finches, canaries, chickens kept as companions, or any other pet-bird species. Many respiratory, digestive, toxic, bacterial and neurologic conditions can look similar. Do not assume a bird has avian influenza from symptoms alone, and do not wait for a symptom pattern to become “classic” before calling a veterinarian after a credible exposure.

Breathing difficulty, seizures, collapse, severe weakness, sudden blindness or rapidly worsening neurologic signs warrant urgent veterinary advice. Birds often conceal illness until they are seriously affected, so a noticeable change in behavior, eating or breathing deserves prompt attention even when bird flu is not the leading explanation.

What to do after a possible exposure

  1. Stop the exposure. Move the bird away from wild birds, poultry, cattle, other outdoor animals, sick or dead animals, and any item or area that may be contaminated. Do not allow pecking or scavenging.
  2. Call an avian veterinarian before travelling. Describe the animal contact, date and location, any contaminated materials, and the bird’s current signs. The clinic can tell you whether to isolate the bird, where to enter, and what precautions are needed.
  3. Separate the exposed bird as directed. Keep it away from other pet birds and household pets while you wait for professional instructions. Use dedicated food and water dishes and avoid sharing carriers or cleaning tools.
  4. Limit unprotected handling. Do not kiss the bird, place it near your face, or handle secretions, feces or contaminated bedding unnecessarily. If contact cannot be avoided, ask the veterinarian or public-health authority what protective equipment and cleaning steps are appropriate.
  5. Preserve useful information. Note when and how the contact occurred, which animals or surfaces were involved, and when signs began. Do not attempt to collect samples or perform home tests unless a professional instructs you.
  6. Follow reporting and testing instructions. A veterinarian or animal-health authority may coordinate testing, isolation, transport or disposal of contaminated material. Requirements vary by location and can change during an outbreak.
  7. Monitor people who had direct contact. Anyone who handled a potentially infected bird or contaminated environment should watch their own health and contact a healthcare provider or public-health authority if symptoms develop. Tell them about the animal exposure.

Do not take an ill bird to a clinic without calling first. Advance notice lets staff protect other patients and decide how the bird should be received.

Everyday prevention for companion-bird homes

Keep outdoor animals and pet birds apart

CDC’s core advice is: “Prevent pets from interacting with wild birds, backyard poultry, cows, or other outdoor animals.” Keep cages, play stands, food bowls and exercise areas away from places where wild birds or poultry gather. Do not allow a pet bird to share a coop, barn, pasture, vehicle or carrier with poultry or livestock.

Outdoor time requires more than a cage door. A secure enclosure can still be contaminated by droppings, feathers, water or equipment brought in from an area used by wild birds. If the bird’s enclosure, carrier or toys have been outdoors, inspect them before bringing them back into the home and follow veterinary guidance for cleaning.

Control what enters the home

Clothing, footwear, hands and equipment can carry contamination from an aviary, farm, wildlife rescue, hunting area or dead-bird scene. Change or clean items before handling a pet bird when they may have contacted animals or their waste. Keep the bird away while potentially contaminated materials are being dealt with; do not shake dusty bedding or feathers near the cage.

There is no need to turn routine bird care into a permanent decontamination exercise when no plausible exposure exists. The goal is targeted separation after contact with potentially infected animals or environments.

Use safe food and water practices

Do not feed pets raw pet food or unpasteurized milk, as CDC advises. Store food so wild birds, rodents and other animals cannot contaminate it, and keep water containers away from outdoor animal access. Ask your veterinarian before introducing unusual animal-derived foods or supplements.

Plan before an incident

Identify an avian veterinarian, the nearest emergency clinic that accepts birds, and your local animal-health or public-health contact before you need them. Keep a carrier that can be cleaned, but do not use it for a potentially exposed bird and then return it to normal use without professional cleaning instructions. A written record of your bird’s normal appetite, breathing and behavior can make subtle changes easier to recognize.

What is known—and not known—about individual risk

The available CDC guidance supports a clear prevention message but does not calculate the odds for a particular bird. It does not provide incidence rates by species, a household probability, or a numerical risk gradient for indoor versus outdoor housing. Consequently:

  • You should not assume that every pet bird is in immediate danger.
  • You should not assume that indoor housing guarantees zero risk.
  • You should not label a bird infected from a symptom or an unconfirmed exposure.
  • You should not use the low general-public assessment from April 23, 2025 to dismiss a close, unprotected exposure.

Risk depends on what happened: contact with an infected or dead animal, contact with contaminated material, the duration and closeness of exposure, and whether further contact was prevented. Only a veterinarian and relevant public-health or animal-health officials can interpret an actual incident.

When to contact a doctor or public-health authority

Seek medical advice if you develop illness after direct contact with a pet bird that may have been infected, especially when the contact involved respiratory secretions, feces, a sick or dead animal, or prolonged unprotected handling. Tell the clinician exactly what happened and when. Public-health officials may provide monitoring, testing or work-and-household precautions based on the current situation.

For the bird, contact a veterinarian promptly after a plausible exposure and immediately for breathing problems, severe neurologic signs, collapse or rapidly worsening illness. Veterinary care is the appropriate way to distinguish avian influenza from the many other conditions that affect pet birds.

Reliable guidance to check

Local animal-health and public-health agencies may issue additional instructions during an outbreak.
