The apparent extinction paradox has a simple explanation: axolotls are familiar in aquariums and online, but the wild population in the Xochimilco system near Mexico City is assessed as Critically Endangered.
What is an axolotl?
An axolotl is an amphibian in the salamander group. “Axolotl” is its common English name; “ajolote” is used in Spanish. The species at the center of the viral-pet conversation is the Mexican axolotl, Ambystoma mexicanum—not a fish or a fictional creature. Conservation International’s axolotl overview describes its biology and cultural visibility.

Why does it look like a baby?
Axolotls display neoteny: they retain larval characteristics as adults, including external gills, and remain aquatic rather than undergoing the usual transition to a terrestrial adult form. Their unusual appearance is a feature of their life history, not evidence that they are immature.

Can they regenerate body parts?
Conservation International notes that axolotls can regenerate limbs and parts of the heart, spine, and brain. This remarkable ability does not make them invulnerable, nor does it make their care simple.

Why are axolotls endangered if they are popular pets?
Captive animals and wild populations are different conservation realities. Axolotls are popular in aquariums and have been bred in laboratories for more than a century, while the wild species is native to a limited, degraded habitat in the Xochimilco lake system near Mexico City. Seeing captive-bred animals in videos or collections does not show that the wild population is recovering.
The IUCN Red List assessment for the Mexican axolotl classifies it as Critically Endangered. The IUCN SSC Amphibian Specialist Group’s assessment, made on 23 October 2019 and published in 2020, estimated 50–1,000 mature individuals and reported a decreasing trend. These are assessment estimates, not a fresh count in 2026.

The same 2020 assessment estimated a decline of more than 80% over three generations (16.5 years), inferring the decline from urbanization, water pollution, and the predation and competition associated with invasive species. The figure describes the assessment’s estimate for that period; it should not be read as a newly measured 2026 decline.
What is threatening wild axolotls?
- Urbanization and habitat degradation: development around the Xochimilco system has reduced and degraded the habitat on which the wild population depends.
- Water pollution: pollution in the waterways is identified as a pressure on the remaining habitat.
- Invasive species: invasive animals add predation and competition, further stressing the native axolotl population.
Conservation International describes restoration work that includes returning to ancestral farming practices, pesticide-free farming, and biofilters intended to clean water. These are habitat-restoration efforts, not proof that the wild population has recovered.

Has a new census changed the population picture?
Not on the evidence reported in the available announcement. In 2024, the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) said scientists were conducting a new census in Xochimilco and that analysis was still needed before the species’ presence could be evaluated. Does TikTok show how common axolotls are?
No. Axolotls appear on TikTok and in other popular culture, as Conservation International notes, but social-media visibility is not a wild-population survey. The available sources do not establish a verified TikTok view count or a measured popularity trend, so online attention cannot be used to infer either how many wild axolotls remain or whether their numbers are increasing.

Can you keep an axolotl as a pet?
That depends on local law and whether you can meet the animal’s needs throughout its life. WWF rates ownership as a moderate concern for conservation, legality, and welfare; it cautions that appropriate housing, food, and veterinary care can be difficult to provide, and generally does not recommend axolotls as pets. WWF’s pet guidance advises checking local rules, since some U.S. states prohibit ownership or require permits.
