Baby Bearded Dragon Care: A Safe First-Year Setup and Daily Routine

A practical, source-based guide to baby bearded dragon care: build the enclosure, measure heat and UVB, feed and hydrate a growing dragon, clean safely and know when to call a reptile veterinarian.

A baby bearded dragon needs four things from its first day: a secure, well-ventilated enclosure; a measured heat gradient; unfiltered UVB with a shaded retreat; and a varied, age-appropriate diet. Add clean water, daily observation, prompt cleaning and access to a reptile veterinarian, and you have the foundation for safe growth. Set up and measure the habitat before bringing the dragon home—bulb wattage or a package label cannot tell you whether the animal is actually receiving the right temperatures and UVB exposure.

The figures below are attributed to the veterinary and animal-welfare sources that publish them. They do not all use the same age bands or measurement conventions, so use them as source-specific guidance and have a reptile veterinarian adjust the plan for your individual dragon.

What a baby bearded dragon needs on day one

Before the dragon arrives, verify five conditions:

  • The enclosure is escape-proof, has secure ventilation and leaves room for the dragon to move between warm, cool and shaded areas.
  • A warm basking area and a cooler end are both measured with digital thermometers. An infrared thermometer can check the basking surface.
  • A linear reptile UVB fluorescent tube is mounted so UVB reaches the dragon without glass or other filtering, while the layout still provides shade.
  • Hides, a stable basking branch or rock and a shallow, stable water dish are ready and cannot topple onto the animal.
  • Feeder insects, finely chopped greens, a way to gut-load insects and a plan for daily observation are in place.

These are husbandry controls, not optional decorations. A dragon can look comfortable while a thermometer, fixture distance or ventilation problem is quietly causing chronic stress or poor growth.

Choose and arrange the enclosure

Size is a life-stage decision

VCA Animal Hospitals describes 20 gallons as a minimum juvenile enclosure depending on the dragon’s size, while also recommending larger housing as it grows (VCA’s housing guidance, published August 13, 2022 in the listing). Treat 20 gallons as that source’s qualified juvenile minimum, not a universal target for every baby or a suitable adult size. The RSPCA’s guidance gives substantially larger adult dimensions, so plan for an enclosure that can be upgraded rather than assuming a small starter habitat will last.

Measure the usable floor area and height, not just the marketing volume. The dragon should be able to leave the basking zone, reach a genuinely cooler end and hide without being trapped beside the heat source. If a juvenile enclosure cannot provide those zones at the same time, it is too small regardless of its stated gallon capacity.

Ventilation, doors and furnishings

Use a rigid enclosure with secure ventilation and doors that close reliably. Place ventilation so fresh air can move through the habitat without creating an uncontrolled draft directly across the basking site. Keep the enclosure on a stable stand where other pets and children cannot open it.

Build at least one hide on the cooler side and, if space allows, another retreat near but not directly under the basking area. VCA notes that “All reptiles appreciate a hiding place” and lists hides among essential housing provisions. Add a broad, stable branch or rock for basking; it must not wobble, overheat unexpectedly or allow the dragon to climb into the lamp. A shallow dish should sit firmly on the floor and have edges low enough for a baby to use safely.

Keep the floor easy to inspect and clean. Remove waste as soon as you see it, and clean furnishings with a reptile-safe method that leaves no residue the dragon can ingest. Do not let decorative items block the dragon’s route between temperature zones.

Set a measured heat gradient

Bearded dragons regulate body temperature by moving through the enclosure. One “correct” temperature is therefore less useful than a verified gradient. VCA’s published values are:

Zone or measurement VCA value How to use it
Cool end air 75–80°F (24–27°C) Place a digital thermometer at the cool end, at the dragon’s usual height.
Warmer end air 90–100°F (32–38°C) Measure at the warm end rather than relying on the heater’s rated wattage.

VCA recommends thermometers at both ends. The RSPCA also calls for digital thermometers at the cool and basking zones and emphasizes measuring the basking area. These are different measurements: a probe or digital thermometer reports nearby air temperature, while an infrared gun reports the surface temperature of a rock, branch or other target. Check both when setting up, because a surface can be much hotter or cooler than the air around it.

How to test the gradient

  1. Install the heat source and guard it so the dragon cannot touch the hot element.
  2. Place one digital thermometer at the cool end and another at the warm/basking end. Position probes where the dragon actually rests, not against a wall or outside the enclosure.
  3. After the enclosure has run long enough to stabilize, record the cool and warm readings.
  4. Use an infrared temperature gun to scan the top surface of the basking rock or branch from the dragon’s normal basking distance.
  5. Recheck after changing lamp height, adding a screen or moving furnishings. A new distance or mesh layer changes the result.

Select equipment by the temperatures and surface readings you can verify in your enclosure, not by wattage alone. If the warm end is too cool, adjust the approved fixture, distance or control method and measure again. If the basking surface is excessive or the cool end is too warm, increase separation, improve ventilation or use a properly controlled heat source; never solve an overheating problem by removing the only shaded retreat.

Night temperatures

The RSPCA care sheet calls for a suitable nighttime minimum but the retrieved guidance does not provide one numerical value. Use a reliable night reading, follow the current care sheet and ask a reptile veterinarian what minimum is appropriate for your room temperature, enclosure and dragon. Do not assume a daytime basking target applies after dark.

Provide UVB without removing shade

Broad-spectrum UVB enables vitamin D3 production and calcium absorption. Merck’s Management and Husbandry of Reptiles guidance describes UVB as essential for bearded dragons and includes regular calcium supplementation as part of husbandry.

VCA describes a UVB range of 290–320 nm and says UVB must reach the animal unfiltered. The RSPCA sheet specifies a reptile fluorescent UVB tube and a light-to-shade photogradient. In practice, use a linear fixture that spans an appropriate portion of the enclosure, mount it securely and arrange furnishings so the dragon can bask beneath it or retreat from it. Glass and many plastics filter UVB; a mesh top also reduces the output that reaches the animal. Fixture design, tube age, reflector, distance and mesh all matter, so a label alone does not prove exposure is adequate.

Check the installation, not just the bulb

  • Confirm the tube’s stated wavelength range and that it is intended for reptiles.
  • Measure the distance from the tube to the dragon’s basking and resting positions after the fixture is mounted.
  • Ensure at least one shaded route exists. The dragon should never be forced to remain under UVB or heat.
  • Replace or service the tube according to its manufacturer’s output guidance and have a reptile veterinarian review the setup if growth, behavior or calcium concerns arise.

Keep UVB and heat on a consistent daytime schedule appropriate to the room and season. The enclosure should have a clear dark period at night unless a veterinarian has given a specific reason to do otherwise.

Feed a baby with variety and age awareness

Babies need frequent, appropriately sized food and access to both animal and plant matter. The RSPCA care sheet says babies should be fed twice daily, greens should be chopped small and feeder insects should be gut-loaded. Offer prey no larger than your dragon can safely manage, remove uneaten insects and keep feeding supervised.

RSPCA Australia reports these age-related proportions from its field-study guidance:

Age band Vegetable matter Animal matter How to interpret it
Hatchlings and juveniles under four months 30% 70% Source-specific proportion; not a universal clinical prescription.
Juveniles four to twelve months 50% 50% Source-specific proportion; reassess as the dragon matures.
Adults 90% 10% Adult guidance, not a baby schedule.

These proportions differ from other schedules because sources define ages and feeding plans differently. Use the table as a framework, not a reason to force a weak, ill or unusually small dragon to meet a percentage. A reptile veterinarian can set portions, prey frequency and supplements for the animal’s age, weight, growth and health.

Prepare plant food

Wash produce, remove spoiled pieces and chop leafy greens and vegetables into baby-sized pieces. Offer a varied selection rather than relying on one plant. Put plant food in a shallow dish that cannot tip, and remove wilted or fouled food promptly.

Prepare feeder insects

Gut-load insects before offering them so the prey itself supplies better nutrition. Keep the insects in a clean, ventilated container with suitable food and moisture sources, and remove uneaten insects from the dragon’s enclosure. A feeder dish and gut-loading container are convenience tools; they do not replace variety, correct prey sizing or professional nutrition advice.

Calcium and other supplements

Merck includes regular calcium supplementation in reptile husbandry, but the cited sources do not establish one safe frequency or formula for every baby. Supplement choice and frequency should be individualized with qualified reptile-veterinary advice, especially when UVB output, diet, growth or prior medical history is uncertain. Do not compensate for a poorly placed UVB fixture by adding unmeasured amounts of supplements.

Water, humidity and cleaning

Provide clean water in a shallow, stable dish. Replace it every day and immediately whenever it is soiled. Keep the dish away from the hottest surface so it does not rapidly evaporate or raise local humidity, while still making it easy for the dragon to find.

The RSPCA care sheet gives 30–40% as the usual humidity range at the cool end. Measure humidity with an appropriate gauge positioned at the cool end and interpret the reading alongside ventilation and the dragon’s behavior. A single reading near the basking lamp does not describe the whole enclosure. Correct a persistent mismatch by checking airflow, water placement and room conditions before changing equipment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Spot-clean feces and urates promptly. Wash hands after handling the dragon, food, water dish or waste, and keep reptile equipment separate from food-preparation areas. A full cleaning routine should follow the disinfectant’s directions and leave surfaces rinsed and dry before the dragon returns.

Use a simple observation routine

Every morning

  • Confirm the heat and UVB equipment is operating and check the cool, warm and basking readings.
  • Replace water and remove waste or spoiled food.
  • Observe alertness, posture, movement, breathing and interest in food without forcing handling.

At each feeding

  • Offer the planned greens and correctly sized, gut-loaded insects.
  • Watch that the dragon can move away from the feeding area and that insects are not left loose to bite or stress it.
  • Record what was eaten if appetite or growth is a concern.

Weekly and after every equipment change

  • Inspect guards, lamp mounts, doors, ventilation and hides for looseness or sharp edges.
  • Check the UVB tube, reflector and distance after cleaning or rearranging the enclosure.
  • Review weight and growth with a consistent scale if your veterinarian has recommended monitoring.

The RSPCA recommends monitoring health and behavior daily and contacting a reptile veterinarian about concerns. A general care article cannot diagnose illness or provide a treatment plan.

When to call a reptile veterinarian

Arrange an initial examination with a veterinarian experienced in reptiles and ask how often a growing dragon should be rechecked. Contact that clinic promptly when you notice a sustained change in appetite, activity, posture, breathing, stool, hydration or growth, or when the dragon cannot use the warm and cool zones normally. Bring your temperature and humidity log, enclosure photographs, lighting details, diet and supplement information. Those records help the veterinarian distinguish an equipment problem from a medical one.

Do not give human medicines, leftover antibiotics or improvised calcium treatments. If the dragon appears severely weak, has difficulty breathing, is injured or cannot stay upright, seek urgent veterinary advice rather than waiting for a routine appointment.

Troubleshoot the setup before changing the animal’s diet

The cool end is too warm

Recheck probe placement, ventilation and room temperature. Confirm that furnishings have not blocked the cool-side vents or reduced the retreat area. Make one change at a time and measure again after the enclosure stabilizes.

The basking area never reaches the target

Use the infrared gun to verify the actual surface, then check fixture distance, guard and mesh. A higher-wattage lamp is not automatically safer or better; the result must be measured and the dragon must retain a cooler route.

The dragon avoids the basking or UVB area

Check whether the surface is excessive, the lamp is too close, the fixture flickers, or the route is blocked. Confirm that shade and hides are available. If equipment readings are appropriate but behavior remains abnormal, contact the reptile veterinarian.

Humidity stays outside the intended range

Verify the gauge with a second reading, then inspect water placement, ventilation and room conditions. Do not seal the enclosure or add moisture blindly; ask a reptile veterinarian for a plan suited to your enclosure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A first-week checklist

  1. Set up the enclosure, ventilation, hides, basking surface, water dish and secure guards before the dragon arrives.
  2. Run heat and UVB, then record cool-end air, warm-end air, basking-surface temperature and cool-end humidity.
  3. Confirm the dragon can move from heat to shade and that no glass or plastic blocks UVB.
  4. Prepare small chopped greens, gut-loaded appropriately sized insects and veterinarian-approved supplements.
  5. Feed according to the baby schedule you have chosen with your veterinarian; the RSPCA sheet describes twice-daily baby feeding.
  6. Replace water daily, spot-clean immediately and log appetite, behavior and equipment readings.
  7. Book reptile-veterinary support and take the enclosure log to the appointment.

For source details and illustrations of housing, consult VCA’s Bearded Dragons—Housing, the RSPCA Bearded Dragon Care Sheet, the RSPCA general care guidance and RSPCA Australia’s “How should I care for my bearded dragon?”. Use Merck Veterinary Manual’s reptile husbandry guidance for the role of UVB and calcium, then have a reptile veterinarian apply those principles to your dragon.
