Baby beluga whales are born dark gray, not white. As they mature, their skin gradually lightens until adults become white. Calves are generally born in summer, often in relatively warm, shallow coastal waters, and they nurse for at least two years. Belugas are also exceptionally social and vocal: they use whistles, squeals, moos, chirps and clicks, along with hearing and echolocation, to communicate, navigate and find food.
Those facts make a calf photograph more than a cute picture. Color, water depth, posture and the presence of other whales can each show a different part of a beluga’s early life. The guide below explains five well-supported facts and gives five picture concepts with captions that stay accurate.

What does a baby beluga look like?
1. A calf is born gray, not white
The most important visual correction is also the easiest to remember: newborn belugas are dark gray. The bright white animal associated with the species is an adult, not a newly born calf. NOAA Fisheries describes a calf’s skin as dark gray and says the color lightens as the whale ages.
That change is gradual rather than a switch that happens on a particular day. A young beluga may therefore look gray, blue-gray or somewhere between the dark newborn shade and the much paler adult appearance, depending on its age and the light in the water. A photograph should not be rejected as “the wrong species” simply because the animal is not white; gray is the expected starting color for a calf.

Color alone cannot establish an exact age. Lighting, water clarity and the camera’s color balance can all alter how gray skin appears. A responsible caption can identify a whale as a calf when the source confirms it, while explaining the normal color change without assigning an unsupported number of weeks or months.
Why the color difference matters
Many children’s illustrations and souvenir images use a small white whale to represent a baby beluga. That is an understandable artistic choice, but it reverses the species’ real development. Showing a gray calf beside a pale adult gives readers the clearest possible lesson: belugas lighten as they mature.
Where are beluga calves born?
2. Summer and shallow, relatively warm water are important
Belugas generally give birth in summer. Birth areas can include relatively warm, shallow places such as tidal flats and estuaries. “Generally” matters here: it describes a broad pattern, not a promise that every population uses exactly the same calendar dates or habitat.
NOAA explains why these settings matter. Newborn calves do not yet have the thick blubber layer that protects older belugas from cold water. A shallow area that is warmer than the surrounding sea can therefore provide a less demanding environment during the earliest part of a calf’s life. The source describes the habitat and the insulation difference; it does not establish one universal temperature, depth or named nursery for all belugas.
For readers looking at a coastal photograph, the combination of a calf, a nearby adult and shallow-looking water may fit this seasonal pattern, but the image itself cannot prove the month, water temperature or location. Captions should state only what the photographer or original source has verified.

Interpreting “summer” carefully
Summer is a seasonal description, not a worldwide date range. Beluga populations occupy different regions, and daylight, tides and local conditions vary. Use the wording “belugas generally calve in summer” unless a population-specific source supplies more precise timing. Avoid turning a general species pattern into a claim that every calf is born on the same schedule.
How long do baby belugas stay with their mothers?
3. Calves nurse for at least two years
NOAA Fisheries reports that beluga calves nurse for at least two years. This is a minimum duration in the source, not a statement that nursing always ends at exactly 24 months. It also does not mean milk is necessarily a calf’s only food for that entire period.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchThat distinction is important because “nurses for two years” and “depends exclusively on milk for two years” are different claims. The documented point is the length of nursing. The available source does not provide a timetable for when a particular calf begins sampling other foods, nor does it give a universal weaning date. Keep captions and educational text within that evidence.
A mother-and-calf photograph can illustrate proximity and care, but a still image cannot reveal how long nursing has continued. If a caption mentions the two-year figure, identify it as a nursing period reported for beluga calves rather than as an exclusive diet or a guaranteed separation date.
What the nursing fact tells us
The extended nursing period places the calf’s first years inside a long maternal relationship. It also helps explain why a calf is often photographed close to a larger adult. That visual association is useful, but an image should not be used to identify the adult as the mother unless the original record confirms the relationship.

Why are belugas called the “canaries of the sea”?
4. They produce a remarkable range of sounds
Belugas are highly vocal. NOAA lists whistles, squeals, moos, chirps and clicks, and says the species is known as the “canaries of the sea” because it produces many different sounds. The nickname refers to the breadth of their vocal repertoire, not to a claim that they sound like a particular bird.
Belugas use hearing and echolocation to navigate and hunt. Echolocation involves producing clicks and interpreting returning sound; it is a sensory system, not a visual feature that a photograph can capture directly. A rounded forehead, called a melon, and a flexible-looking neck may be visible in a close image, but those features do not let a viewer hear a call or prove that echolocation is occurring at that moment.
Sound descriptions should remain specific. “Whistles, squeals, moos, chirps and clicks” follows NOAA’s wording. Do not replace that list with invented song titles, human emotional interpretations or an assertion that every individual makes every sound. The source establishes a varied repertoire for the species.
Using a silent picture honestly
A playful underwater image can be paired with a short explanation of beluga vocal behavior, provided the caption makes clear that the photograph is an illustration of the animal, not an audio recording. Readers should never be told that a still picture itself demonstrates a call.
How social are beluga whales?
5. Groups can be tiny or number in the hundreds
Beluga group size is flexible. NOAA reports groups ranging from one or two whales to several hundred. Individuals move between groups, so a calf seen with a particular collection of whales is not automatically part of a permanent, closed unit.

This flexibility gives photographers several legitimate ways to show beluga social life. A single calf beside an adult can emphasize close association. A small cluster can show coordinated surfacing. A large gathering can demonstrate the species’ capacity to assemble in numbers. None of those scenes, by itself, identifies a family structure, a rank or a permanent membership pattern.
Seasonal returns to birth areas
Belugas return to birth areas in summer to feed and calve. This behavior connects the seasonal habitat fact with the social one: places used during the warm season can serve both feeding and reproduction. The statement applies at the species level and should not be stretched into a claim that every whale returns to the exact spot where it was born every year.
A lifespan figure belongs to the species, not the calf
NOAA lists a beluga lifespan of up to 90 years. That is a species-level maximum, not a prediction for an individual newborn and not a measure of how long a calf remains with its mother. Keeping those categories separate prevents an impressive adult statistic from being misread as a fact about infancy.

1. Gray calf swimming beside an adult
- What to show: A verified photograph in which a gray calf is clearly identifiable and a larger beluga is nearby.
- Suggested caption: “Beluga calves are born dark gray and lighten as they mature.”
- Why it works: The image corrects the common assumption that every beluga, including a newborn, is white.
- Alt text: “Gray beluga calf swimming close to a larger beluga underwater.”
2. Mother and calf in a shallow coastal inlet
- What to show: A photograph with documented location details showing two belugas in a shallow coastal setting.
- Suggested caption: “Belugas generally give birth in summer, often using relatively warm, shallow areas such as tidal flats and estuaries.”
- Accuracy note: Do not name a specific inlet, population or water temperature unless the image record verifies it.
- Alt text: “Adult beluga and calf swimming through shallow coastal water.”
3. Close view of the melon and flexible neck
- What to show: A close, well-focused portrait that reveals the rounded forehead, known as the melon, and the animal’s head position.
- Suggested caption: “Belugas use hearing and echolocation to navigate and hunt.”
- Accuracy note: The photograph can introduce echolocation, but it cannot show sound or prove that clicking is happening at the instant of exposure.
- Alt text: “Close underwater view of a beluga’s rounded forehead and face.”
4. Several belugas surfacing together
- What to show: A frame with a clearly countable small group, or a wider scene documenting a much larger gathering.
- Suggested caption: “Beluga groups range from one or two whales to several hundred, and individuals can move between groups.”
- Accuracy note: Do not label the whales as a family or permanent pod without supporting information.
- Alt text: “Several beluga whales surfacing together.”
5. A playful underwater or surface scene
- What to show: An image with an engaging posture or interaction that invites a brief note about vocal behavior.
- Suggested caption: “Belugas are known as the ‘canaries of the sea’ for their whistles, squeals, moos, chirps and clicks.”
- Accuracy note: Say explicitly that a still photograph does not record sound.
- Alt text: “Beluga whale moving playfully near the water’s surface.”
Image rights and credit checklist
Use photographs only when publication rights are documented. A NOAA species page includes a credited image of a beluga swimming with a calf; the displayed credit is Chris Garner, Joint Base Elmendorf–Richardson. The credit shown on a page is not, by itself, proof that an image may be downloaded, edited or republished in every context. Confirm the page’s current reuse terms before publication and preserve any required attribution exactly.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsQuick Recap
- Record the photographer, hosting organization and original page for every image.
- Check whether the permission covers commercial publication, cropping, captions and social-media promotion.
- Keep the credit with the image or in the placement required by the license.
- Do not infer a location, date, mother-calf relationship or sound event from appearance alone.
- Write alt text that describes what is visible rather than repeating an unverified interpretation.
Common wording errors to avoid
- Calling a newborn white: calves are dark gray and lighten with age.
- Writing that a calf nurses exclusively for two years: the documented statement is that calves nurse for at least two years.
- Presenting summer calving as an identical schedule for every population: the species-level wording is “generally.”
- Using a picture as proof of echolocation or vocalization: photographs are silent.
- Turning a group-size observation into a claim about permanent family units: individuals can move between groups.
