Most baby cottontails do not need to be rescued. A mother rabbit normally stays away from the nest for long periods and returns briefly to nurse, so an unattended nest is not proof of abandonment. Leave a healthy baby in an intact nest alone, return a very young rabbit to its original nest when that nest is identifiable and safe, and contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator promptly for injury, cold, weakness, parasites, confirmed maternal death, a destroyed nest, or any cat or dog contact. Do not feed or give water unless a rehabilitator specifically directs you.
I found a baby rabbit—what do I do first?
Keep people, dogs, and cats away while you assess the rabbit from a short distance. Do not pick it up merely because no adult is visible. The mother may be nearby but will often wait until the area is quiet before returning.

| What you observe | Best next action | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Warm, alert baby in an intact nest | Leave it in place and keep the area undisturbed. | Short nursing visits are normal; removing a healthy baby can separate it from its mother. |
| Very young, relatively immobile baby outside a known nest | Gently return it to that nest and replace the nesting cover, then leave. | The original nest and mother offer better care than home treatment. |
| Fully furred, alert rabbit that hops freely | Usually leave it alone as an independent juvenile. | Mobility and development are more useful than the absence of an adult rabbit. |
| Cold, weak, injured, lethargic, parasitized, or exposed to a pet | Contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator promptly and follow its instructions. | Small wounds, shock, dehydration, and infection can worsen quickly. |
| Mother confirmed dead or nest destroyed or unsafe | Arrange professional help rather than attempting to raise the rabbit yourself. | Rehabilitation and transport rules vary by state and locality. |
This triage reflects guidance from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Roanoke Wildlife Rescue, and Ohio Department of Natural Resources. Their recommendations are U.S.-based; your state wildlife agency or a local licensed rehabilitator should make the final call.

When a healthy baby is in the nest
Do not disturb an intact nest just to check whether the mother has returned. Cottontail nests are often shallow depressions lined with grass and fur, and the doe may cover them between visits. California guidance says, “Do not intentionally disturb ground or vegetation within 10 feet of the nest.” Keep mowing, digging, children, and pets away from that immediate area.

Watching from close range can prevent the mother from approaching. If you need to determine whether a nest is being visited, ask a rehabilitator or wildlife agency for a locally appropriate monitoring method rather than repeatedly opening the nest. An adult rabbit not appearing while you are present is not evidence that the baby has been abandoned.
Returning a displaced nestling
A small rabbit that is sparsely furred, has limited mobility, or cannot hop normally is still likely dependent on its mother. If you know where the original nest is and it has not been flooded, crushed, contaminated, or placed in danger, return the baby there as soon as practical.
- Wash or clean your hands if convenient, but do not delay urgent care over concern about human scent.
- Lift the rabbit only as much as necessary, supporting its body without squeezing.
- Place it in the original nest, not in a newly constructed nest elsewhere.
- Replace the grass, leaves, or fur covering in the same general way you found it.
- Withdraw immediately and keep people and pets away.
Roanoke Wildlife Rescue states that ordinary accidental handling does not normally cause a mother to reject her baby. Minimize handling because stress and chilling are greater concerns than scent.

When a young cottontail is independent
A fully furred rabbit with open eyes, normal posture, alert behavior, and the ability to move quickly may already be independent. North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission guidance uses a rabbit over 4 inches that hops freely as a rule of thumb for independence; a rabbit under 4 inches and relatively immobile remains under maternal care. These are that agency’s practical thresholds, not universal biological cutoffs. Size varies with age, health, and local conditions, so seek local advice when the signs do not fit neatly.
Do not chase, catch, or relocate a mobile juvenile simply because it is alone in a yard. Keep pets indoors or leashed and allow the rabbit an escape route to cover. If it is alert and uninjured, observation from a distance is safer than capture.

- A mother that is confirmed dead, rather than merely absent.
- A nest that was destroyed, flooded, exposed, or otherwise cannot safely be restored.
Cat and dog contact deserves special urgency because tiny punctures can seal over while bacteria and internal damage continue underneath. Do not wait to see whether the rabbit appears better.
Can I feed a baby rabbit or give it water?
No—not unless a licensed rehabilitator gives you specific instructions. Do not offer water by mouth, cow’s milk, kitten or puppy formula, homemade mixtures, vegetables, or treats. A chilled, shocked, or improperly positioned rabbit can aspirate liquid into its lungs, and an incorrect formula or volume can cause fatal digestive problems. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Roanoke Wildlife Rescue both advise against feeding or raising a wild baby at home.
Do not force the mouth open, use a syringe, or attempt tube feeding. Feeding schedules and formulas require an examination, species knowledge, and equipment. Even if the rabbit appears hungry, professional assessment comes before nutrition.

Safe temporary containment while you arrange help
Contain the rabbit only when a rehabilitator advises it or when immediate protection from danger is unavoidable. Follow that professional’s exact directions; advice can differ with temperature, injury, and the rabbit’s age.
- Use a secure, ventilated cardboard box or small animal carrier that the rabbit cannot escape from.
- Line the bottom with a smooth towel or soft cloth that will not catch claws. Avoid loose strings, wire flooring, and deep bedding.
- Keep the container in a quiet, dark, room-temperature location away from children, pets, noise, and direct sun.
- Do not repeatedly open the box, handle the rabbit, or take photographs if doing so delays transport.
- Provide warmth only in the manner and amount the rehabilitator directs. A heat source can burn or overheat a weak rabbit.
- Transport at the time and destination arranged by the professional, and tell them exactly when and where the rabbit was found and whether a pet touched it.
Never use temporary containment as permission to begin home rehabilitation. The goal is short-term stabilization and transfer.

Search your state’s wildlife agency for a current list of licensed wildlife rehabilitators, or call the agency’s wildlife office for a referral. Licensing, transport permissions, and after-hours procedures differ across the United States. A veterinarian may provide emergency treatment or help you locate a rehabilitator, but not every clinic is equipped or authorized to raise wild rabbits.

When you call, be ready to report the rabbit’s approximate size, fur and eye status, alertness, temperature to your touch, visible injuries, exact location, nest condition, and any cat or dog contact. Ask whether to leave it, return it to the nest, contain it, or bring it in. Follow the professional’s instructions rather than combining advice from pet-care forums.
Common mistakes that harm baby cottontails
- Taking a healthy nestling indoors because the mother was not seen.
- Rebuilding a nest in a different location when the original is available and safe.
- Checking or handling the nest repeatedly, which can deter the mother and expose the young.
- Giving water, milk, formula, or solid food without professional direction.
- Assuming a pet’s gentle contact was harmless because the skin looks intact.
- Keeping the rabbit for days while trying to find help instead of calling immediately.
- Releasing an injured or weak rabbit without an expert examination.
Why the mother seems absent
Cottontail mothers reduce time at the nest to avoid advertising its location to predators. Their brief nursing visits can happen at times people do not notice. This behavior explains why an apparently empty nest can still be actively cared for. The correct question is not “Have I seen the mother?” but whether the baby is warm, alert, appropriately mobile, and safely connected to its nest.
Human scent is also not a reliable abandonment test. Returning a displaced baby to its known nest does not normally cause rejection, according to Roanoke Wildlife Rescue. The safest intervention is therefore the smallest one that restores the natural mother-and-young relationship.
Source and jurisdiction note
The practical guidance above is based on current pages accessed October 13, 2026, from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, Roanoke Wildlife Rescue, and Ohio Department of Natural Resources, plus the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service handout dated March 2024. The 10-foot nest-disturbance instruction and 4-inch mobility guideline are agency-specific rules of thumb. Wildlife rehabilitation laws and contacts differ by location, so use your own state agency or a licensed local professional.
