A “baby dog” is usually called a puppy. Puppies change remarkably quickly: they are born with immature senses, gain mobility and communication skills within weeks, learn through play, benefit from carefully managed positive experiences, and later enter a chewing-heavy teething stage. The ages below are useful approximations, not deadlines; litter, breed, health, and individual development can shift the timetable.

Here are five accurate facts, each paired with an original-style illustration brief rendered as a simple picture. Any photographic replacement should be an original image or one with documented permission for reuse. Never infer a puppy’s exact age, breed, health, or temperament from a picture alone.

1. Newborn puppies cannot see or hear normally

A puppy’s eyes are closed at birth, and the ear canals are not yet functioning. Sight and hearing mature during the opening weeks rather than arriving fully developed on the first day. Veterinary references commonly place eye opening somewhere between about 10 and 21 days; a practical summary is around two to three weeks, with normal variation.

That delay is an adaptation to early life. A newborn relies heavily on touch, warmth, smell, and nursing contact with its mother and littermates. Once the eyelids begin to separate, vision is still developing, so bright light, sudden handling, and expectations of adult-like coordination are inappropriate. Hearing also comes online gradually as the ear canals open.

If a puppy’s eyes remain sealed beyond the expected period, look swollen or discharge fluid, or appear painful, contact a veterinarian rather than trying to pry the lids apart. The same principle applies to suspected hearing problems: a professional examination is safer than home tests involving loud noises.

2. The first weeks bring rapid physical and vocal changes

Between roughly two and four weeks, puppies pass through several noticeable milestones. Their senses continue developing, their legs become stronger, and they begin experimenting with coordinated movement. By about four weeks, many puppies can walk more reliably and may start barking or wagging their tails. These are broad developmental windows, not appointments every puppy keeps.

Early attempts can look comical: a puppy may stand for a moment, topple over, and try again. Vocal sounds also change from tiny squeaks to more recognizable barks, whines, or growls as communication develops. Tail movement can appear during excitement or interaction, but it should not be interpreted as a complete emotional report. Context, posture, and the puppy’s overall behavior matter.

Keep the environment secure while coordination is emerging. Block stairways, cover gaps behind furniture, and provide a warm, non-slip resting area. Supervise children closely; a puppy that is learning to balance can be startled or injured by being carried, crowded, or encouraged to walk on slippery floors.

3. Play and exploration are how puppies practice being dogs

From about four to eight weeks, puppies increasingly interact with littermates, investigate their surroundings, and begin the gradual transition away from exclusive nursing. Play is not merely entertainment. Chasing, wrestling, carrying objects, and taking short breaks help puppies discover movement, communication, boundaries, and cause and effect.

Good play has pauses. Puppies should be able to retreat to sleep, eat, or settle without being chased. A responsible caregiver can offer several safe textures and objects, rotate them to maintain interest, and remove anything that splinters, sheds pieces, or can be swallowed. Littermate play teaches feedback that humans cannot fully replace, so abrupt separation or constant handling can deprive a puppy of useful social information.

Exploration should be supervised at floor level. Check rooms for electrical cords, toxic plants, small objects, open toilets, and unsecured doors. Let the puppy approach unfamiliar items at its own speed; forcing contact can turn curiosity into avoidance.

4. Positive early experiences shape confidence

Early puppyhood is an important socialization period. Gentle, positive exposure to different people, household sounds, surfaces, handling routines, and calm environments can help a puppy learn that novelty is manageable. “Positive” means the puppy can remain comfortable: use distance, treats, play, and short sessions rather than forcing greetings or overwhelming noise.

Public exposure requires a health plan. Vaccination schedules, disease prevalence, and local rules differ, so ask your veterinarian which places and contacts are appropriate before the puppy’s core vaccinations are complete. A puppy may be able to learn safely through carried outings, controlled visits with healthy vaccinated dogs, or clean private spaces, but the right choices depend on veterinary advice and local disease conditions.

Socialization is broader than meeting strangers. Teach cooperative handling of paws, ears, mouth, collar, and coat in tiny increments. Pair each touch with food or a calm voice, stop before distress, and repeat later. Watch for cowering, tucked posture, frantic escape attempts, or persistent freezing; these signs mean the experience is too intense and should be made easier.

5. Teething turns exploration into serious chewing

In the later stage of early puppyhood, roughly 12 to 24 weeks, permanent teeth begin replacing baby teeth and chewing often increases. Puppies investigate with their mouths, and sore gums can make household objects especially tempting. A suitable chew toy can redirect that urge, but it is not automatically safe simply because it is sold for dogs.

Choose an item matched to the puppy’s size and chewing style. Inspect it frequently for cracks, loose pieces, frayed sections, or chunks that could be swallowed, and remove it when damaged. Supervise chewing, especially during the first uses. Avoid objects that are so hard they risk tooth injury or so small they can lodge in the throat. Your veterinarian can help assess a particular material or product for your puppy.

Management matters as much as the toy. Keep shoes, children’s toys, medication, batteries, and food waste out of reach; use gates or a pen when direct supervision is impossible. If a puppy swallows part of an object, is gagging, vomits repeatedly, or seems painful, contact a veterinarian or emergency clinic promptly rather than waiting for symptoms to resolve.

What the milestones mean for everyday care

Developmental windows help you prepare, not grade a puppy. One puppy may walk or vocalize earlier than a sibling; another may take longer to settle into new food, surfaces, or handling. Compare the puppy with its own recent behavior and consult a veterinarian if progress stops, reverses, or is accompanied by poor appetite, lethargy, pain, breathing difficulty, or persistent diarrhea.

Nutrition changes also occur during this period. Dr. Jerry Klein, the American Kennel Club’s chief veterinary officer, explains: “Most pups begin the gradual switch from their mother’s milk to solid food anywhere from 3-to-5 weeks old.” The transition should follow guidance from the mother’s caregiver and a veterinarian, with a complete puppy diet introduced gradually rather than as a sudden replacement.

A simple puppy-observation checklist

  • Eyes and ears: note gradual opening and responses to normal, gentle sounds; seek veterinary advice for swelling, discharge, pain, or concern.
  • Movement: provide non-slip flooring and safe space while standing and walking are still awkward.
  • Rest: protect frequent sleep periods and give the puppy a retreat away from traffic and children.
  • Learning: reward voluntary investigation and calm handling; stop sessions before the puppy becomes frightened or overtired.
  • Chewing: offer size-appropriate toys, inspect them, and remove hazards from the puppy’s environment.

Using puppy pictures responsibly

Adorable images are useful for showing posture, expression, and ordinary puppy settings, but appearance is not evidence of age, breed, health, or behavior. Captions should say only what the image visibly contains. If you replace these illustrations with photographs, confirm that the photographer, shelter, breeder, or stock provider has granted the required publishing rights, and record any attribution or license conditions. Images appearing on a publisher’s page are not automatically cleared for reuse elsewhere.

For children, pair each picture with the practical message behind it: newborn senses develop gradually, movement changes quickly, play supports learning, gentle exposure builds confidence, and teething requires safe management. That combination keeps the charm of a baby dog while respecting what real puppies need.
