If you are comparing the examples covered by wildlife guidance, a Mallard duckling is usually the smaller bird with dark brown-and-yellow markings and a dark line through the eye. A Canada Goose gosling is larger, olive-green and yellow, and does not have that distinct eye-line.
Those clues are not a universal key for every duck and goose species. If the young bird is alone, injured or behaving abnormally, its welfare matters more than a perfect identification: keep your distance, avoid feeding it and contact a local wildlife rehabilitator for instructions.

The quick comparison: Mallard duckling versus Canada Goose gosling
The clearest side-by-side guidance available for this question compares a Mallard duckling with a Canada Goose gosling. It does not establish a method that works for every species, age or lighting condition. Use the traits as a combination of clues, not as a guarantee.

| Color | Dark chocolate-brown and yellow markings | Olive-green and yellow coloring | Color can vary with age, wet feathers and light, so treat it as a clue rather than proof. |

How to inspect a young waterfowl bird without making things worse
Start from a distance
Stand far enough away that the adults continue normal behavior. Approaching a brood can make a parent move away, scatter the young or lead you to mistake a normal pause for abandonment. Use binoculars or a phone camera zoom if you need a closer look, rather than walking into the group.
Look at the whole pattern
Check relative size, the overall brown-versus-olive cast, and whether a dark line crosses the eye. A single feature can be misleading: wet down may look darker, shadows can hide an eye-line, and two birds at different ages can look dramatically different even within the same species.
Use the adults and siblings as context
An adult bird nearby is often more informative than the youngster’s color. Watch for a brood moving together, an adult calling, or a young bird responding. Context should guide a cautious welfare decision, not become a reason to chase, handle or relocate a healthy family.

Why “duck or goose” cannot be answered from color alone
The published comparison is specifically Mallard ducklings and Canada Goose goslings. It should not be generalized to every duckling and gosling in North America, much less to waterfowl worldwide. Species differ, and young birds change quickly as they grow their juvenile feathers.
Even within one species, age, feather condition, weather and lighting alter appearance. A bird that looks olive in shade may look yellow in direct sun; a wet bird can appear smaller and darker; and a partly hidden eye can make the diagnostic line hard to see. For those reasons, identification should remain tentative unless the parent or brood is clearly visible.
The longer neck and triangular bill described by Greenwood Wildlife are notes from a rehabilitation foster process, not a field guide covering all goslings. They can support an impression that a bird is a gosling, but they cannot rule out every duck species.

If the family is nearby: a cautious reunion attempt
Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife gives a specific sequence for a separated duckling or gosling when you know where its family is. The aim is to put the young bird within hearing range without turning the attempt into a prolonged chase.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Locate the brood. Confirm the likely siblings and parent before moving the young bird. If you cannot identify the family, do not guess at a destination.
- Place the youngster close to its siblings. Put it near the brood and where the parent can hear it. Choose a spot that is safe from immediate traffic, pets and other obvious hazards, while keeping your own handling brief.
- Move away and observe from a distance. Give the adults time to approach. Staying nearby can prevent the parent from returning, so watch quietly from far enough away that the family behaves normally.
- Check whether it is accepted. A successful reunion means the bird rejoins the group and the parent does not drive it away. Do not assume that simply being near the brood proves acceptance.
- Stop if it is rejected. If the parent repeatedly avoids or attacks the youngster, retrieve it, place it in a ventilated container and contact a wildlife rehabilitator.
Do not repeatedly move a bird from place to place or keep testing different broods. If the first safe reunion attempt fails, professional advice is the next step.
When a lone bird needs immediate professional help
Contact a permitted wildlife rehabilitator promptly if the bird is sick, injured or has been exposed to a predator. Washington guidance identifies several warning signs:

- Drooping wings
- Shivering
- Lethargy or unusually low responsiveness
- An attack or capture by a cat, dog or another predator
A bird can have serious internal injuries even when you cannot see blood or a broken bone. Predator contact is therefore a reason to call, not a situation to watch for a few hours.
BC SPCA guidance also recommends contacting a local wildlife rehabilitator for a baby wildlife situation, giving nesting ducks and geese ample space and not feeding them. Orphaned ducklings typically require care at a wildlife rehabilitation centre until they are grown and ready for release.

Temporary care while you arrange transport
If a rehabilitator or wildlife agency tells you to bring the bird in, use a simple temporary setup. This is short-term protection, not home care or an attempt to raise the bird yourself.

You can use the chick supplies outdoors, on a farm or ranch, or you can have many birds or fowls eating together to avoid chewing on each other.
- Prepare a ventilated container. A secure cardboard box or similar container with air holes is preferable to an open tub from which the bird can escape. Keep the container closed enough to reduce stress while allowing airflow.
- Line the bottom. Use a clean, soft cloth or paper towels so the bird has traction and is not sliding on a smooth surface. Avoid loose loops, strings or materials that can catch toes or bills.
- Keep it warm, quiet and dark. Put the container in a calm indoor location away from children, pets, television and handling. Gentle ambient warmth is appropriate, but avoid direct heat that could overheat or burn the bird.
- Do not give food or water. Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife specifically advises withholding both while you wait for help or transport. Improper feeding or watering can cause choking, aspiration or other complications.
- Limit contact. Do not stroke, photograph repeatedly or open the box to check every few minutes. Tell the rehabilitator where and when you found the bird and what you observed.
Follow the rehabilitator’s instructions if they differ for a particular injury or species. Do not try to splint a limb, clean a wound deeply or administer medication unless a qualified professional directs you.
What not to do
- Do not feed a found youngster while waiting for advice. Bread, milk, seed and household pet food are not a safe emergency diet for an unidentified wild bird.
- Do not pour water into its bill. A frightened or weak bird can inhale liquid.
- Do not take a healthy brood home for identification. Removing a bird that is still with its family creates the separation you are trying to prevent.
- Do not assume a quiet bird is abandoned. Parents may be nearby and may wait for people to leave before returning.
- Do not release an injured bird on your own. A short flight or walk does not demonstrate that it has recovered.
- Do not rely on online color charts as a final diagnosis. The Mallard–Canada Goose comparison is limited to those examples.
Choosing the right local contact
Wildlife rules, permitted facilities and response procedures vary by location. Contact the wildlife agency or licensed rehabilitator serving the place where the bird was found, rather than relying on a number from another state or country. Explain the species you suspect, the exact location, whether the parent is visible, any predator contact and the bird’s current condition.
If you are unsure whether the bird is truly separated, describe what you see before touching it. A rehabilitator can tell you whether to watch from a distance, attempt the cautious reunion sequence, or contain the bird for transport.
A practical decision checklist
- Observe first: Is an adult or brood nearby, and is the young bird moving normally?
- Compare cautiously: For the specific examples covered here, look for the Mallard’s smaller size and dark eye-line versus the Canada Goose gosling’s larger, olive-green-and-yellow appearance.
- Protect the family: Keep people and pets back and avoid disturbing nesting ducks or geese.
- Reunite only when the family is known: Place the youngster near its siblings, where the parent can hear, then leave the area and watch from a distance.
- Escalate rejection or injury: Retrieve a rejected bird or any bird showing drooping wings, shivering, lethargy or predator exposure, and call a rehabilitator.
- While waiting: Use a ventilated, lined container in a warm, quiet, dark place; provide no food or water unless a qualified professional instructs you otherwise.
The safest answer to “a baby duck or goose?” is therefore two-part: identify only as confidently as the evidence allows, and treat separation or injury as a wildlife-care question rather than a guessing game.
