Yes. Diapers, wipes, creams, medicines and other ordinary baby supplies can injure pets if they are swallowed, chewed or licked. The danger depends on the ingredient, concentration, amount, pet species and whether an object can cause a blockage. Keep these supplies secured, never give children’s medicine to an animal, and contact a veterinarian or animal poison service promptly after a suspected exposure.

Why baby supplies become pet hazards

Baby products are designed for infants, not for dogs, cats or other animals. A pet may tear open a diaper, lick cream from a changing mat, drink sanitizer from a diaper bag or swallow a small pacifier. Some exposures cause only temporary stomach upset; others can damage organs, trigger dangerously low blood sugar, or require surgery for an obstruction.

Risk is case-specific. A dog and a cat may react differently to the same ingredient, and a small amount can matter more for a small animal. Concentration also changes the assessment: a trace lick of a diluted product is not equivalent to swallowing a large amount of concentrated cream or medicine. Do not use a general symptom list to decide that an exposure is safe.

ASPCA’s published guidance identifies the main concerns in diaper areas and bags. Its 2025 report counted more than 376,000 items involved in calls to ASPCA Poison Control; its 2024 report counted more than 451,000 animal toxic-substance exposure calls. Those are different measures, neither is specific to baby products, and they should not be treated as a like-for-like trend or a prevalence estimate.

Diapers, wipes and changing supplies

Used or clean diapers

Pets can swallow the absorbent filling, plastic, fasteners or contaminated contents of a diaper. The material may irritate the gastrointestinal tract, cause vomiting or diarrhea, or lodge in the stomach or intestines. A blockage can become life-threatening even when the pet initially appears normal.

A reusable diaper fastener adds a puncture or sharp-object hazard if a pet chews it. Do not pull on a visible strip or fastener unless a veterinarian tells you to; manipulation can worsen an injury or move an object.

Baby wipes

Wipes can be swallowed whole or in pieces and may cause gastrointestinal upset or obstruction. Their ingredients vary, so retain the package when seeking advice. Some dental wipes for babies may contain xylitol. Xylitol can cause serious poisoning in dogs, while the risk profile is different for other species. Never assume that every dental wipe contains xylitol or that a product without it is harmless.

Diaper-rash cream and petroleum jelly

Many diaper-rash creams contain zinc oxide. ASPCA says zinc oxide is poorly absorbed, but swallowed cream can irritate the digestive tract and cause vomiting, diarrhea or an allergic reaction. Higher-concentration formulations create additional concern, so the exact product and amount matter.

Petroleum jelly and similar ointments can cause stomach upset after ingestion. Oily products can also be aspirated if a pet vomits, particularly when a large amount is swallowed. Wipe residue from a pet’s fur only as directed by a veterinary professional; some cleaning methods increase absorption or cause skin irritation.

Medicines: never share a child’s dose with a pet

Acetaminophen

Acetaminophen products intended for children should never be given to pets. ASPCA notes risks to the liver and red blood cells. Even an accidental tablet, partially used liquid or dropped dose warrants immediate professional advice; do not wait for symptoms.

Ibuprofen

Children’s ibuprofen is also unsafe to administer to pets. ASPCA describes gastrointestinal ulcers and, with larger ingestions, kidney failure among the possible effects. Liquid formulations may include additional ingredients, and a pet’s body weight and health change the risk. Do not calculate a “safe” amount at home.

Antihistamines and topical medicines

Diaper bags may contain antihistamines, topical antibiotic ointments or other medicines. Some products are dangerous because of the active drug; others contain decongestants, alcohols, sweeteners or combination ingredients. Call before inducing vomiting or giving food, milk or another home remedy.

Other diaper-bag items that deserve attention

Item How exposure happens Potential concern What to do
Alcohol-based hand sanitizer Licking a spill or drinking from an open container Alcohol-related toxicity, stomach upset and neurologic effects; severity depends on amount and formulation Remove access, keep the label, and call a veterinarian or poison service promptly
Lotions and sunscreens Licking skin, chewing a tube or swallowing product Ingredient-dependent irritation or toxicity and gastrointestinal upset Do not assume a baby-labelled product is pet-safe; obtain product-specific advice
Bottle nipples and pacifiers Chewing and swallowing pieces or the whole item Choking or gastrointestinal obstruction Seek urgent veterinary guidance if any part is missing
Formula Drinking prepared formula or powder Stomach upset; ingredients and quantity determine risk Save the package and report the amount and time
Baby-food pouches Licking residue or eating the pouch contents or packaging Stomach upset; some recipes may contain unsafe ingredients for pets Check the ingredient list and call for case-specific advice
Gum or candy containing xylitol Eating dropped pieces or an open packet Potentially severe poisoning in dogs Treat as urgent and contact a professional immediately
Raisins Eating food intended for a child Potential kidney injury in dogs; individual sensitivity varies Call promptly even if the dog looks well
Hair ties, clips and small toys Chewing and swallowing Choking or intestinal obstruction Do not wait for signs if an item is missing
Blankets and clothing Chewing and ingesting fabric Obstruction, especially when material bunches in the intestine Contact a veterinarian for guidance on monitoring or examination

The 2024 ASPCA diaper-bag guidance lists these categories because the hazard is not limited to a single “toxic” ingredient. A nonpoisonous object can still require emergency treatment if it blocks the digestive tract.

How to store baby essentials safely

Secure the changing area

  1. Keep diaper creams, wipes, medicines and fasteners in a closed cabinet or other location pets cannot reach.
  2. Close every cap immediately after use and wipe spills before allowing an animal into the room.
  3. Put used diapers in a lidded, pet-resistant container; take the waste out regularly.
  4. Keep pacifiers, nipples, toys and clothing in containers rather than on the floor or edge of a table.

Make the diaper bag a controlled-access item

  1. Store the bag in a closed closet or high, inaccessible location whenever it is not in use.
  2. Empty food wrappers, used wipes and medicine packets after every outing.
  3. Check side pockets for dropped tablets, gum, hair ties and clips before placing the bag near a pet.
  4. When traveling, keep the bag zipped and within sight rather than on the floor of a vehicle or waiting room.

A cabinet lock or latch may help limit access, but ASPCA’s storage advice does not endorse or test a particular device. Choose a setup that remains closed when adults are distracted and that children cannot easily defeat.

What to do after a suspected exposure

  1. Move the pet away from the product. Prevent further licking or chewing without putting your hands at risk.
  2. Check breathing and responsiveness. Collapse, seizures, severe weakness, trouble breathing, repeated vomiting or a swollen painful abdomen require emergency veterinary care.
  3. Identify the product. Keep the container, ingredient panel, concentration, package size and any missing pieces.
  4. Estimate the exposure. Note the pet’s species, weight, age, medical conditions, amount possibly swallowed and time of exposure. An estimate is useful even when uncertain.
  5. Call for instructions immediately. In the United States, ASPCA Animal Poison Control lists a 24-hour, 365-day service at 888-426-4435; a one-time consultation fee may apply. Elsewhere, contact a local veterinarian or animal poison service.
  6. Follow the professional’s directions. Do not induce vomiting, administer human medicine, give oil or milk, or wait for symptoms unless specifically instructed.

ASPCA’s published wording is direct: “If you believe your pet has ingested something potentially toxic or seems to be having an adverse reaction to something, please contact your veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center immediately at (888) 426-4435 for assistance.”

Signs that can appear after exposure

Possible signs include drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, coughing, gagging, unusual sleepiness, agitation, weakness, tremors, seizures, changes in urination or yellowing of the gums or eyes. These signs overlap among many illnesses and do not identify the product or dose. Some dangerous exposures produce delayed symptoms, so a normal appearance immediately after ingestion is not proof that monitoring at home is safe.

Obstruction may present as repeated vomiting, refusal to eat, lethargy, abdominal discomfort, straining to defecate or very little stool. A missing pacifier, diaper fragment, fastener, toy or fabric item is itself important information, even if no symptoms have developed.

Questions a veterinarian or poison specialist will ask

  • What animal and breed is involved, and how much does it weigh?
  • What exactly was eaten, licked or chewed? Provide the brand-neutral product name and complete ingredient list.
  • How much may be missing, and was the product concentrated, diluted, wet or used?
  • When did the exposure occur, and has the pet vomited or shown any other signs?
  • Does the pet have kidney, liver, gastrointestinal or other medical problems, or take regular medicines?

Gathering this information speeds triage, but do not delay the call while trying to determine an exact amount.

Bottom line for a baby-and-pet household

The safest assumption is that every baby essential needs controlled storage until its ingredients and physical hazards have been considered. Diapers, wipes and small accessories can obstruct the gut; zinc-oxide creams can irritate it; some dental wipes and foods contain xylitol or other problematic ingredients; and children’s acetaminophen and ibuprofen must never be used as pet medicines. Secure the changing area and diaper bag, inspect labels, and obtain veterinary or poison-control advice immediately after a suspected exposure.
