Baby Hummingbird on the Ground: How to Get It Safely Back to the Wild

A grounded baby hummingbird needs species-specific help. Check for the nest, reunite only when it is safe, and contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator for injury, abandonment or any uncertain case.

If you found a baby hummingbird on the ground, do not feed it or assume that ordinary fledgling advice applies. Keep people and pets away, look for the original nest from a discreet distance, and reunite the bird with its parent only if it is uninjured and the nest can be reached safely. If the nest is missing, appears abandoned, the bird is hurt, or reunion is not possible, call a licensed wildlife rehabilitator promptly and follow its instructions.

What to do in the first few minutes

A hummingbird on the ground needs a species-specific response. Pause before picking it up, create a quiet area, and assess the situation without crowding the bird.

1. Keep the scene calm

  • Move children, dogs, cats and other pets away.
  • Ask bystanders not to handle or surround the bird.
  • Watch from a safe distance so a parent can approach if one is nearby.

Do not chase the bird, repeatedly move it, or try to make it fly. Stress and unnecessary handling can make a difficult situation worse.

2. Check for obvious danger or injury

Look for visible broken limbs, bleeding, persistent shivering, inability to remain upright, or other signs of distress. A deceased parent nearby is also a reason to seek professional help. These are warning signs identified in U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service wildlife guidance. If any are present, contact a licensed rehabilitator rather than attempting a reunion yourself.

3. Look for the nest

Scan nearby branches, shrubs and sheltered areas without disturbing them. Hummingbird nests can be small and easy to overlook. Do not move, detach or open a nest to inspect it. The University of Illinois Wildlife Medical Clinic advises that an uninjured hummingbird has its best chance when it is safely returned to its own nest.

Can you put a baby hummingbird back in its nest?

Yes, if the bird is uninjured, the original nest has been located, and returning it can be done safely. The objective is reunion with the parent, not raising the bird at home.

When reunion is appropriate

  • You can identify the original nest with reasonable confidence.
  • The bird has no obvious injury or severe distress.
  • You can reach the nest without climbing dangerously, damaging vegetation or moving the nest.
  • A wildlife professional has not told you to avoid handling the bird.

Use the least handling possible and follow hummingbird-specific professional guidance. If reaching the nest would put you or the bird at risk, stop and call a rehabilitator for directions.

Watch without hovering

After a safe reunion, leave the area and observe discreetly from far enough away that a parent will not be deterred. A feeding visit may be brief and easy to miss, and a parent can return quickly. Do not interpret several quiet minutes as proof that the nest is abandoned.

Why ordinary fledgling advice can be wrong for hummingbirds

General baby-bird pages often distinguish nestlings, which are usually featherless and need the nest, from feathered fledglings, which may spend time outside it. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and California Department of Fish and Wildlife give versions of that broad advice for healthy, general fledglings. California’s memorable wording is, “Leave them there, if you care”! That statement applies to a healthy general baby bird in an appropriate location, not automatically to a hummingbird lying on the ground.

The University of Illinois Wildlife Medical Clinic’s hummingbird guidance specifically says hummingbirds should not spend time on the ground, including fledglings. Therefore, do not mechanically apply a songbird rule to a hummingbird found below the nest. First look for the nest and assess whether professional help is needed.

Choose the right path: reunion or rehabilitation

Situation Best next step Why
Bird is alert and uninjured; original nest is found and can be reached safely Follow hummingbird-specific guidance to return it, then observe from a distance The parent provides the appropriate care and gives the bird the strongest chance of survival
Nest cannot be located Call a licensed wildlife rehabilitator promptly Guessing at a nest or attempting home care can delay proper treatment
Nest appears abandoned or a parent is confirmed dead Contact a licensed rehabilitator and follow its instructions The bird may need supervised care and a lawful rehabilitation plan
Bird is bleeding, has a suspected fracture, is shivering, or cannot function normally Seek urgent rehabilitator advice; do not attempt reunion first Handling or feeding an injured bird without training can worsen its condition
Reunion cannot be completed safely Arrange professional help rather than trying to raise or release the bird yourself The bird’s condition and developmental needs require qualified assessment

What to do when the nest is missing or the bird is hurt

Call before transporting

Contact a permitted or licensed wildlife rehabilitator as soon as possible. Ask whether the facility accepts hummingbirds, explain where the bird is, describe its behavior and visible injuries, and ask what to do next. Facilities may have species limits, intake hours or emergency procedures that differ by location.

Call ahead before driving anywhere. A rehabilitator may direct you to another facility, give specific handling instructions, or tell you that an agency should respond. Follow the professional’s directions instead of choosing a drop-off point at random.

Prepare useful information

  • Your exact location and the time you found the bird.
  • Whether you saw a nest, parent or predator.
  • Whether the bird was on the ground, caught in something or struck an object.
  • Visible bleeding, a drooping wing, unusual posture, shivering or trouble breathing.
  • Anything already done to move or contain the bird.

Accurate details help the rehabilitator decide whether the bird needs immediate pickup, careful transport or continued observation.

Temporary containment: only when a professional tells you to use it

If a rehabilitator instructs you to contain the hummingbird while transport is arranged, the International Hummingbird Society recommends a ventilated box lined with tissue, kept warm and quiet. This is a short bridge to professional care, not a substitute for it.

  1. Use a clean, secure box with ventilation openings that cannot trap toes or wings.
  2. Line the bottom with soft tissue so the bird is not sliding on a hard surface.
  3. Place the box in a warm, quiet location away from pets, children, direct sun and loud activity.
  4. Limit opening the box, touching the bird or attempting to make it stand or fly.
  5. Transport only as directed by the rehabilitator.

You do not need to buy a special carrier for this interim step. Do not improvise treatment, splint a limb or apply medication.

What should you feed a baby hummingbird?

Do not give food or water by mouth unless a licensed wildlife rehabilitator specifically directs you to do so. That means no sugar water, honey, household mixtures, insects, formula or water dripped into the bill. The International Hummingbird Society warns that improper feeding or hydration can be fatal, and an untrained person can send liquid into the bird’s airway.

Perky-Pet Glass Hummingbird Feeders for Outdoors, 8 oz Nectar Capacity
  • ACCOMADATES MULTIPLE BIRDS: Every feeder features four flower-shaped feeding ports with comfortable U-shaped perches that allow several hummingbirds to feed simultaneously, making these hummingbird feeders for outdoors ideal for busy bird watching seasons
  • 8 OZ CAPACITY: Each 2-pack of glass hummingbird feeders have 8oz nectar capacity, providing ample feeding space for multiple hummingbirds while maintaining the perfect size for smaller yards and patios
  • BUILT-IN ANT MOAT & BEE GUARDS: Add water to the built-in ant moat to keep ants away, while the bee guards prevent bees from consuming the sweet nectar inside the glass feeders. Creating this dual defense system allows each bird uninterrupted access so they can feed peacefully
  • EASY FILL & CLEAN: Filling is simple as the wide-mouth glass bottle design makes it easy to add nectar while preventing spills. Cleaning takes little time, as the ant moat, base, and bee guard components are made to disassemble from the feeder so every part can be cleaned thoroughly
  • BIRDWATCH WITH EASE: Watch the birds clearly as the glass construction provides high visibility from all angles, while the pinch waist-design creates an attractive and functional feeder that will last you through every bird season

Do not place a feeder beside a grounded bird as a do-it-yourself solution. A feeder does not replace the parent, diagnose injury or provide the controlled care a rehabilitator may need to deliver.

Common mistakes that reduce a hummingbird’s chance of recovery

  • Leaving a grounded hummingbird because it is feathered. That generic fledgling rule does not settle a hummingbird case.
  • Searching by moving the nest. Leave the nest attached and undisturbed.
  • Waiting all day before calling for help. If the nest is missing, the parent is absent or injury is suspected, get professional advice promptly.
  • Trying to raise the bird at home. Hummingbird care involves specialized feeding, temperature and release decisions.
  • Offering nectar or water. Oral feeding without instruction can cause fatal complications.
  • Assuming silence proves abandonment. Parents may make short, easy-to-miss visits.
  • Attempting a finder-led release. A bird that can flutter is not necessarily healthy or ready to survive independently.

What a successful outcome looks like

The desired outcome is either a safe reunion with the parent or professional rehabilitation followed by release when the bird is medically and behaviorally ready. A finder cannot reliably determine readiness from appearance alone. Rehabilitation staff assess injuries, hydration, development and the bird’s ability to function in the wild, then handle release under applicable wildlife rules.

Do not keep the hummingbird as a pet, even temporarily beyond the period a professional authorizes. Wild birds may be protected, and possession, transport and rehabilitation requirements vary by jurisdiction. Your state or provincial wildlife agency and a local permitted rehabilitator can explain the rules that apply where you live.

How to find a licensed hummingbird rehabilitator

  1. Search your state, provincial or territorial wildlife agency for its list of permitted wildlife rehabilitators.
  2. Contact a nearby facility and confirm that it accepts hummingbirds.
  3. Explain the bird’s condition and location before transporting it.
  4. Follow the facility’s instructions for containment, timing and handoff.
  5. If the first facility cannot accept the bird, ask for a referral rather than abandoning the search.

Availability, accepted species, emergency coverage and transport rules differ by region. A local wildlife agency can provide the most accurate route when no rehabilitator is immediately obvious.

Quick checklist

  • Keep pets, children and crowds away.
  • Assess from a safe distance for bleeding, broken limbs, shivering or severe distress.
  • Look for the original nest without moving it.
  • If the bird is uninjured and safe reunion is possible, follow hummingbird-specific guidance and observe discreetly.
  • If the nest is missing, appears abandoned, injury is suspected or reunion is unsafe, call a licensed rehabilitator promptly.
  • Give no food or water by mouth unless the rehabilitator directs you.
  • Use a ventilated, tissue-lined box only when instructed, and treat it as temporary containment.
