A baby moose is called a calf. In the North American sources cited here, most calves arrive in late May or early June, with reddish-brown, spot-free coats and birth weights reported from roughly 25–35 pounds (Michigan) or 11–16 kilograms (British Columbia). A calf may stand very early, but the exact milestone differs by agency: British Columbia says the first day, while Michigan reports standing by the fifth day. Calves remain closely associated with their mothers for about a year, and a cow can become dangerous if a person approaches or blocks her calf.
This guide answers what a baby moose looks like, when it is born, how fast it becomes mobile, what it eats, and how to observe one safely. The picture section distinguishes one documented public-domain image record from additional scenes that require separate sourcing and rights checks.

1. What is a baby moose called, and when is it born?
A young moose is a calf. The North American wildlife agencies cited for this guide place the main calving period in late spring. Lake Clark National Park and Preserve gives late May through early June, while the Michigan Department of Natural Resources says late May or early June. Those windows describe the jurisdictions covered by the agencies, not a universal date for every moose population.

Spring births give a calf access to improving vegetation during its first weeks. They also explain why sightings of apparently tiny moose are concentrated around late May and June in many northern parks and forests. Weather, latitude, food conditions, and the individual cow can shift the timing, so a calf seen outside that window should not automatically be assumed to be abandoned or unusually young.

2. What does a newborn moose look like?
Newborn calves have a reddish-brown coat and do not have the white spots characteristic of some other hoofed young. Michigan describes calves as reddish-brown and without spots. The National Park Service says that reddish hue is present at birth and that the coat darkens with age. Rocky Mountain National Park summarizes it this way: “Newborn moose have a reddish hue to their fur when born and will stay with their mother for a year.”
The color can look especially vivid against green vegetation or late-season snow, but photographs vary with shade, wet fur, camera settings, and the calf’s age. A darker coat does not by itself indicate a different species or a problem. As the calf grows, its proportions also change: the long legs and large ears that look oversized on a newborn become more balanced as the body gains mass.

3. How much does a baby moose weigh?
Published agency estimates differ by jurisdiction, so there is no single exact birth weight that applies to every calf. Michigan reports approximately 25–35 pounds at birth; the year of that page’s publication is not stated. The Government of British Columbia reports 11–16 kilograms (about 24–35 pounds) on a page published approximately 2023, although the search record does not provide an exact publication date.
| Source and region | Reported birth weight | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Michigan Department of Natural Resources | About 25–35 lb | Agency estimate; page year not stated |
| Government of British Columbia | 11–16 kg | Agency estimate; page published approximately 2023 |
These ranges overlap rather than conflict. They are useful field estimates, not a promise that every newborn will fall inside the same limits. Sex, maternal condition, local genetics, and the timing of the weighing can all affect an individual measurement. The underlying figures appear on the Michigan DNR page and the Government of British Columbia moose page.
4. How soon can a moose calf stand and walk?
Early mobility is another point where agency descriptions use different milestones. British Columbia says a calf can stand on its first day. Michigan says calves can stand by the fifth day and begin following their mothers at about two to three weeks. Because these statements come from different jurisdictions and may define the milestone differently, they should not be merged into one definitive schedule.
Standing, walking a few steps, and traveling reliably with a cow are separate abilities. A newborn that remains lying down while its mother feeds nearby may still be behaving normally. Conversely, a calf that can walk is not independent; its survival still depends on the cow for protection, guidance, and access to suitable habitat. Avoid approaching to test whether a calf can move. Human presence can cause the cow to return, charge, or relocate the calf.

5. How many calves does a moose have?
One or two calves are the usual pattern in the descriptions used here, but regional details matter. Lake Clark National Park notes that cows sometimes have triplets. British Columbia says single births are the rule there and that twins occur in 10–20% of adult cows under normal conditions. That percentage is regional and should not be generalized to all moose populations.
A cow with more than one calf may need to defend several vulnerable young at once. Observers should not interpret a lone calf as proof that its mother is absent: cows often feed or rest out of sight while remaining close enough to respond. If two calves are present, keep the same distance you would keep from one; the cow’s protective response can be swift.

The mother-calf association lasts about one year in the descriptions from Rocky Mountain National Park and British Columbia. During that period, the cow protects the calf and the pair may travel, rest, and feed in the same general area. A yearling can be much larger than a newborn while still being the young animal associated with its mother.

This long association is why a calf that appears physically capable should not be treated as an independent adult. Separation can occur temporarily when the cow feeds or moves through dense cover, so well-meaning intervention can create the very problem a visitor is trying to prevent. Watch from a distance, keep people and dogs away, and contact local wildlife staff if the animal is visibly injured or in immediate danger.
7. What do baby moose eat, and where do they live?
Moose browse leaves, stems, buds, and bark. In warmer months they also feed on aquatic plants. Typical habitat includes forests, wetlands, and areas near lakes and streams. These are general moose food and habitat descriptions; the cited agencies do not establish a separate, age-specific menu for calves.
That distinction matters when interpreting a photograph. A calf standing beside a pond is not evidence that it is eating aquatic vegetation, and a calf near a road is not evidence that roadside plants are its preferred food. Habitat use changes with season, water availability, cover, and the cow’s movements. The Rocky Mountain National Park page and Lake Clark page describe these broad feeding and habitat patterns.
8. Are baby moose dangerous to approach?
The calf is not the animal to test. A cow may defend her young, and a disturbed moose can act aggressively. Lake Clark advises visitors not to get between a mother and calf. Denali National Park likewise warns that moose can be aggressive when disturbed.

Picture guide: eight useful scenes and what is verified
The title calls for eight pictures, but the documented records available for this article do not verify eight separate image files, credits, and usage statements. Only the first item below has a specific, reviewed record. The remaining captions are commissioning or search briefs: obtain each image from a reputable wildlife, park, or licensed collection and confirm current rights before publication.
- Female moose and yearling calf in snow — verified record. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service record identifies photographer James N. Perdue, a shot date of February 26, 2011, and public-domain media rights. The subject is a female with a yearling calf browsing in snow, and the record offers multiple image sizes. Check the live record and its current credit instructions at Female Moose and calf in snow before downloading.
- Newborn calf beside its mother in late spring. Use a clearly dated image that shows the reddish-brown, spot-free coat and identifies the location and photographer.
- Calf standing in forest cover. Caption the jurisdiction and approximate age only when the photographer or agency has documented them; do not infer age from size alone.
- Mother and calf near a wetland. A marsh, pond, or stream can illustrate typical moose habitat, but the caption should not claim the calf is eating aquatic plants unless that behavior is visible and documented.
- Twin calves with their cow. Confirm that the image really shows twins and obtain permission or a public-domain statement from the rights holder.
- Calf following its mother. A sequence or field note can illustrate the Michigan estimate of following at two to three weeks, but do not assign that age without evidence.
- Older calf with a darker coat. Pair the image with a location and date so readers understand that coat darkening is an age-related description, not a separate species trait.
- Safe-distance wildlife viewing. Show observers remaining outside the animals’ space, with local park rules visible or named in the caption. Never stage a close approach for a photograph.
How to identify a responsible calf photograph
A useful caption answers four questions: where was the image made, when was it made, who made it, and what permission covers reuse? Add the animal’s relationship when it is known, such as cow and yearling, but avoid declaring a calf newborn, abandoned, or a particular age from appearance alone. Public-domain status can change by record or jurisdiction, so recheck the source page immediately before publishing.

For the documented Fish & Wildlife Service image, retain the photographer name, shot date, and public-domain designation supplied by the record. For any additional image, preserve the license or agency credit exactly as required. A search-result thumbnail, an unattributed social-media post, or an image copied from another article is not proof of reuse rights.
