Baby or Adult Bearded Dragon? An Age-by-Age Care Guide

Babies need frequent meals, more live prey and smaller feeders; adults need a more plant-forward diet. Compare age-specific feeding, habitat, UVB, heat, supplements and transition guidance without relying on a one-size-fits-all schedule.

Baby bearded dragons need more frequent meals, more live prey and smaller feeders than adults. As a dragon grows, feeding usually shifts toward leafy greens and vegetables, while meal frequency decreases. The enclosure, ultraviolet-B (UVB) lighting, heat gradient, safe furnishings, hydration and hygiene requirements remain important at every age.

There is no single evidence-backed birthday when every dragon should switch to an adult diet. Use age as a starting point, then consider body size, growth, appetite and measured habitat conditions. Feeding ratios, temperatures, UVB specifications and supplement schedules differ among reputable care guides, and a 2023 veterinary review notes that evidence-based recommendations for the amount, type and frequency of food and supplements are still lacking.

Baby and adult care at a glance

The practical difference is energy demand. A growing dragon generally eats more often and gets a larger share of appropriately sized insects. An adult still needs animal protein, but its menu should be more plant-forward. Both stages require a properly measured thermal gradient, suitable UVB exposure, calcium-aware nutrition, fresh water, ventilation and enough floor space to move, bask and retreat.

Care area Baby or young dragon Adult dragon How to use the guidance
Meal frequency RSPCA: twice daily for babies. North Carolina State University (NC State): two to three feeds daily under one month, twice daily from one to four months, then once daily from four months to adulthood. RSPCA: once daily. NC State: daily or every other day. These are source-specific schedules, not a universal rule. Adjust for growth, body condition and veterinary advice.
Diet balance More live insects; offer chopped greens from the beginning. More dark leafy greens and vegetables, with insects retained as part of the diet. Percentages differ among guides, so do not combine them into one formula.
Prey size Very small feeders selected for the dragon’s current size. Larger feeders may be suitable, but prey must still be narrower than the animal’s head or mouth. Oversized prey can cause serious health problems at any age.
Supplements UC Davis describes more frequent calcium use for juveniles than adults. UC Davis describes weekly calcium and a monthly multivitamin when the diet is otherwise good. Supplement products and schedules vary; excessive supplementation is also a risk.
Enclosure Starting in an adult-capable habitat avoids a disruptive upgrade as the animal grows. Needs a stable basking area, cool retreat, ventilation and room for normal movement. UC Davis and the RSPCA publish different minimum dimensions; see the enclosure section.
Shedding More frequent because growth is rapid. Less frequent once growth slows. Shed frequency alone does not diagnose illness.

Feeding a baby or juvenile bearded dragon

How often to offer food

Feeding frequency changes fastest during the first months. The RSPCA recommends feeding babies twice a day and juveniles and adults once a day. NC State gives narrower age bands: two to three meals per day for dragons younger than one month, twice daily from one to four months, and once daily from four months through adulthood. Because the definitions of baby and juvenile differ between guides, record your dragon’s hatch date or estimated age and monitor growth instead of applying a calendar switch blindly.

Offer only as much as the dragon eats actively and safely during the meal, then remove uneaten insects. A dragon that suddenly refuses food, loses weight, becomes weak or produces abnormal stools needs an examination by an exotic-animal veterinarian rather than an automatic increase in feeding.

What the young-dragon diet contains

Young dragons need a larger proportion of live prey than adults. The RSPCA gives an example of approximately 65% livefood and 35% greens for young dragons, with the green component increasing as the animal grows. That percentage is a practical guide from the RSPCA, not a laboratory-established requirement for every individual.

Offer finely chopped, dragon-safe greens early so the animal learns to recognize plant food. Insects should be gut-loaded with nutritious food before they are offered, and uneaten live prey should not remain in the enclosure where it can bite or stress the dragon. Variety is preferable to relying on one feeder type, but every insect must be an appropriate size and sourced safely.

Choose prey by width, not by a label such as baby or adult

UC Davis advises very small prey for babies and warns that prey that is too large can cause serious health problems. The RSPCA says livefood should be no bigger than the dragon’s mouth. NC State uses a similar rule: do not feed an insect wider than the dragon’s head. These rules apply even when a feeder is marketed as a particular life stage; measure the individual insect or select a smaller one.

  • Check the feeder against the width of the dragon’s mouth or head before every meal.
  • Use smaller prey for a newly acquired hatchling, a runt or an animal recovering from illness.
  • Do not assume that a soft-bodied insect is safe when its overall width is excessive.
  • Remove uneaten insects after the feeding period.

Calcium and multivitamins for young dragons

Calcium supports bone development, but supplement advice is not identical across sources. UC Davis describes more frequent calcium supplementation for juveniles than for adults. The appropriate product, amount and frequency depend on the complete diet, whether the feeder insects are gut-loaded, the UVB setup and the dragon’s health. Do not stack several fortified products or increase doses because growth appears slow. Ask an exotic-animal veterinarian to review the whole feeding and lighting plan if there is poor growth, weakness, tremors or deformity.

Feeding an adult bearded dragon

Frequency and portion control

Adult dragons generally eat less often than babies. The RSPCA states once-daily feeding for adults, while NC State lists daily or every-other-day feeding. An adult that is gaining excess weight may need a different portion or interval than a lean, active animal; a brumating or ill dragon requires veterinary guidance. Keep a simple record of meals, body weight and stool changes so a gradual trend is visible.

Plant food becomes the larger share

As dragons mature, keep dark leafy greens and vegetables available and continue offering appropriately sized insects. The RSPCA describes dragons over 30 cm as receiving about 40% livefood and 60% greens. NC State gives an adult composition of 50% dark leafy greens, 20% vegetables, 25% animal matter and no more than 5% fruit. Those proportions are different examples from different veterinary or welfare guides; neither should be presented as a universal prescription.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fruit should remain a small occasional component under the NC State guidance because its sugar content can displace more useful foods. Wash produce, chop it into manageable pieces and remove wilted food. Continue to vary greens and vegetables rather than allowing one favored item to crowd out the rest of the diet.

When should you switch from baby to adult feeding?

Do not use a single birthday or a sudden change in appetite as the switch point. UC Davis reports sexual maturity at approximately 10 to 18 months, but sexual maturity is not the same as the ideal date for changing food proportions. Size, growth rate, body condition and the advice of the veterinarian who knows the dragon are more useful than an age-only rule.

  1. Confirm the baseline. Record the dragon’s estimated age, length, weight, appetite, stool and current feeding schedule for at least several days.
  2. Check the habitat first. Verify basking and cool-side temperatures at the animal’s level, confirm UVB fixture placement and inspect the enclosure for stressors. Poor heat or UVB can look like a diet problem.
  3. Increase plant food gradually. Keep offering familiar insects while adding more dark leafy greens and vegetables. A gradual change is easier to monitor than removing live prey at once.
  4. Reduce frequency only when growth supports it. Move toward an adult schedule described by your chosen veterinary guide when growth has slowed and body condition is appropriate, rather than because a label says juvenile or adult.
  5. Reassess every few weeks. Weigh the dragon, note stool and activity, and return to the veterinarian if weight falls, appetite remains poor or the animal becomes lethargic.

There is no validated universal transition ratio. The 2023 review by Barboza and colleagues states: “Evidence-based recommendations for the amount, type, and frequency of food items and supplements are lacking for bearded dragons.” That limitation is a reason to monitor the individual animal, not a reason to ignore established prey-size and husbandry safeguards.

Enclosure and habitat: what both ages need

Plan for adult space from the start

Bearded dragons grow quickly. UC Davis recommends beginning with a large enclosure and gives a minimum build dimension of 48 × 24 × 18 inches. The RSPCA gives a minimum adult vivarium size of 120 × 60 × 60 cm. These dimensions are not interchangeable conversions or a guarantee that every dragon will thrive in the smallest stated enclosure. Use a secure, well-ventilated habitat that allows a hot basking zone, a genuinely cooler retreat, climbing or hiding opportunities and easy cleaning.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A temporary small tank can become unsuitable quickly as a young dragon grows. Measure the usable interior space, not the manufacturer’s outside dimensions, and make sure furnishings do not eliminate the thermal gradient. Keep dragons separately housed; the RSPCA notes territorial behavior and the risk of injury.

Build a measured thermal gradient

A dragon needs to move between warmer and cooler areas to regulate body temperature. The sources provide different starting points, partly because measurement location and equipment affect readings.

Source Warm or basking guidance Cool or night guidance Qualification
UC Davis, 2019 Daytime tank temperature 80–85°F; basking spot 88–95°F. Night drop to 70–75°F. These are the figures in its 2019 care guidance.
NC State Veterinary Hospital, page accessed 2026 About 86°F warm side and a 90–100°F basking area. About 76°F on the cool side. The page notes that experts vary.
RSPCA Basking zone 38–42°C. Cool end 22–26°C; night air not below 20–22°C. Use the stated measurement zones; do not mix these numbers casually with another setup.

Use a reliable digital or infrared thermometer to check the basking surface and air temperatures, plus a second reading on the cool side. Recheck after changing bulbs, fixtures, substrate or furnishings. A thermostat is essential for any controlled heat source, and the dragon must be able to leave the basking area.

UVB is needed throughout life

UVB enables vitamin D3 production and helps the dragon use dietary calcium. Babies and adults do not outgrow this requirement. The RSPCA recommends a high-output 10–12% UVB fluorescent tube for its described setup and a UV Index gradient of 3.0–5.0 in the basking zone falling to zero in shade. UC Davis’s 2019 guidance describes a fluorescent bulb with at least 5% UVB and replacement every three to six months. NC State says UVB bulbs should be replaced every six months.

  • Exceptional Quality: Cosequin is backed by science, undergoing thorough quality inspections to ensure your dog receives a safe, high-quality product. It is manufactured in the United States with globally sourced ingredients

These specifications cannot be separated from lamp type, reflector, distance, mesh and manufacturer instructions. A bulb’s percentage printed on the package does not tell you the UV level reaching the dragon. Position a shaded retreat so the animal can escape UVB, and measure output with a UV Index meter when possible. Replace lamps on the schedule appropriate to that specific model rather than waiting for visible failure.

Water, humidity, ventilation and furnishings

Provide a shallow dish of clean water, as recommended by the RSPCA, and refresh it regularly. Ventilation must prevent stagnant, persistently damp conditions while preserving the measured heat gradient. Include stable hides and climbing surfaces that cannot collapse, burn the dragon or block the basking lamp. Spot-clean waste promptly, wash hands after handling the dragon or its equipment, and supervise children; reptiles can carry Salmonella even when they look healthy.

A practical routine by life stage

Task Baby or juvenile routine Adult routine
Every day Check both temperature zones and UVB access; offer the age-appropriate number of meals; inspect appetite, activity and stool; remove uneaten insects and spoiled greens; refresh water. Check temperatures and UVB access; feed on the selected daily or every-other-day schedule; offer greens and the planned insect portion; remove waste and spoiled food.
Each week Weigh or measure consistently, inspect toes and skin, review prey width and gut-loading, and clean surfaces. Record weight and appetite, inspect skin and feet, review body condition and clean the enclosure.
After equipment changes Re-measure basking, cool-side and nighttime temperatures and confirm the UVB distance. Repeat the same checks; an adult’s larger body does not make an unmeasured setup safe.

Growth, shedding and signs that need attention

Normal developmental differences

Young dragons shed more often because they are growing rapidly. Adults shed less frequently. A shed may make the skin look dull or patchy, but do not pull attached skin from toes, tail or eyelids. Provide the normal habitat gradient and consult a veterinarian if retained skin is persistent or the dragon appears distressed.

Track trends instead of isolated meals

A single skipped meal is less informative than a continuing pattern. Record weight, appetite, activity, stool and shedding. NC State advises seeking exotic veterinary help for warning signs such as persistent appetite change, abnormal stool or lethargy. Rapid weight loss, weakness, tremors, breathing difficulty, swelling, repeated vomiting or inability to use a limb should be treated as urgent concerns.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not diagnose metabolic bone disease, parasites or impaction from an online checklist. Those conditions can have overlapping signs and require examination and, when indicated, testing. Bring the food log, supplement containers, lamp details and recent temperature readings to the appointment.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Using one feeding chart for every age

Problem: A hatchling and an adult are fed the same frequency and insect proportion. Correction: Start with the age-specific schedules above, then adjust for growth and body condition while keeping the veterinarian informed.

Choosing feeders by species name alone

Problem: An insect is called a small or juvenile feeder but is still wider than the dragon’s head. Correction: Apply the mouth-or-head-width rule to the individual feeder every time.

Making a sudden switch to vegetables

Problem: Live prey is removed abruptly and the dragon stops eating. Correction: Add greens early, increase the plant share gradually and monitor weight rather than forcing a deadline.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Replacing UVB by calendar habit alone

Problem: A keeper assumes every lamp lasts the same amount of time or that visible light means usable UVB. Correction: Follow the lamp manufacturer’s interval, account for fixture and distance, and measure UV output when possible.

Keeping two dragons together

Problem: Territorial behavior causes chronic stress, competition or injury. Correction: House dragons separately unless an experienced reptile veterinarian has approved a specific arrangement; provide each animal its own complete habitat.

Choosing a setup for a new owner

If you are buying or adopting a baby, the safest long-term plan is an enclosure that can meet adult space requirements, with furnishings arranged so the young dragon can still reach food and basking areas safely. If you are taking in an adult, prioritize measured temperatures, UVB access, cleanable surfaces and enough room for a cool retreat before changing the diet.

  • Have the enclosure heated and measured before the dragon arrives.
  • Install the UVB fixture at the distance specified for that lamp and provide shade.
  • Keep a supply of appropriately sized feeders, greens, gut-load and the supplement selected with veterinary guidance.
  • Use separate tools for food and waste where practical, and wash hands after every handling or cleaning session.
  • Arrange an initial examination with an exotic-animal veterinarian, especially when age, prior diet or health history is uncertain.

Lifespan and long-term planning

With proper care, UC Davis gives a captive lifespan of seven to 10 years, while NC State lists eight to 10 years. Individual longevity depends on genetics, preventive care, nutrition, housing and disease. A baby-care plan should therefore include the adult enclosure, the gradual dietary shift and a replacement schedule for lighting equipment from the beginning.
