A baby pigeon is called a squab. A newly hatched Rock Pigeon is helpless, lightly covered in yellow or white down, and dependent on both parents for warmth and food. Instead of mammalian milk, its parents produce a protein- and fat-rich secretion in the crop called crop milk.

For Rock Pigeons, incubation lasts about 18 days and the nestling period is approximately 25–32 days. The five facts and photo descriptions below show how a squab changes from a downy hatchling to a feathered young pigeon, while keeping species differences and safe found-bird advice clear.

What is a baby pigeon called?

“Squab” is the usual name for a young pigeon, especially while it is still in the nest. The term is often used for several pigeon species, but the clearest timing in the sources here applies to the Rock Pigeon (Columba livia). Other pigeons and doves can differ in nesting sites, diet and development, so do not treat every number below as a universal pigeon schedule.

Rock Pigeons commonly lay one to three eggs per clutch. Cornell Lab of Ornithology lists an incubation period of about 18 days, followed by a nestling period of roughly 25–32 days. Those figures describe the species, not an individual bird’s exact birthday or the age of every squab seen in a photograph. Cornell’s Rock Pigeon life-history account provides the species-specific details.

Five amazing facts about baby pigeons

1. A squab starts life almost completely helpless

Newly hatched Rock Pigeons are sparsely covered with soft yellow or white down. They cannot fly, regulate their body temperature well, or find food independently. Their eyes and body control develop while they remain in the nest, so a hatchling that looks very different from an adult pigeon is normal rather than a sign that it belongs to another species.

The thin down is not a full coat of feathers. As the squab grows, pinfeathers emerge in protective sheaths and gradually open into the familiar gray, patterned plumage. Until that process is well underway, the parents’ brooding is essential: an exposed nestling can become chilled quickly, even on a day that feels mild to a person.

2. Its first food is crop milk, not seeds

Both parent Rock Pigeons can feed their young a secretion called crop milk. It is produced in the crop, a food-storage pocket in the throat, and regurgitated directly to the squab. It does not come from mammary glands. As BirdNote narrator Michael Stein puts it, “Unlike milk from mammals, pigeon milk doesn’t come from a mammary gland.” The explanation appears in National Audubon’s BirdNote account of pigeon milk.

Crop milk is unusually rich in fat and protein for a bird secretion, supplying concentrated nutrition while the chick is tiny. The parents’ crop lining changes during breeding so that cells can be shed into the secretion. A squab does not need a bowl, syringe or substitute product: in a healthy nest, its parents deliver the food in the way its anatomy is designed to receive it.

3. Both parents brood and feed the young

Rock Pigeon parenting is a two-adult job. The male and female both help keep the eggs and nestlings warm, and both can provide crop milk. National Audubon’s Rock Pigeon field guide identifies care by both parents and notes that the young remain in the nest for about 25–32 days.

This shared care explains why an adult seen leaving a nest is not proof that the nest has been abandoned. One parent may be away gathering food while the other broods, or the adults may alternate visits too quickly for a casual observer to notice. Watching from a distance is safer than opening or handling a nest.

4. The nestling stage lasts weeks, not a few days

A Rock Pigeon squab is normally a nestling for approximately 25–32 days. During that interval it progresses from downy and nearly immobile to fully feathered enough to climb, balance and test its wings. The range is approximate: hatching time, food availability, weather and individual development can shift the day a particular bird leaves.

When a pigeon finally departs, it may still look smaller and less polished than an adult. Leaving the nest is a transition, not instant independence. Young birds continue learning to fly, land and locate food while adults remain involved nearby.

5. Rock Pigeons can reuse a nest

Rock Pigeons may reuse nesting sites. Cornell notes that repeated use can allow nesting material to accumulate over time, especially on ledges, building structures and other sheltered surfaces. A reused nest may therefore look deeper, messier or more substantial than a newly assembled platform.

Do not judge whether a nest is active solely by its appearance. Eggs, down, droppings and old twigs can remain after a previous brood, while an active pair may be absent when you look. Behavior over repeated, distant observations is more informative than one inspection.

Rock Pigeon squab development at a glance

The table separates appearance from exact age. Only the overall Rock Pigeon ranges are established; a photograph cannot reliably provide a precise hatch date.

Stage Typical Rock Pigeon timing What you may see How the parents help
Egg About 18 days of incubation One to three eggs in a clutch; adults may cover them almost continuously Both adults incubate and protect the nest
Newly hatched squab First days after hatching Sparse yellow or white down; helpless, with no flight feathers Brooding for warmth and crop milk feeding
Growing nestling Most of the 25–32-day nestling period Pinfeathers and then opened feathers; stronger neck, legs and balance Repeated crop-milk feeds, gradually changing as the chick grows
Pre-fledging young bird Late in the approximate 25–32-day range Mostly feathered; may stand, climb or flap on the nest edge Adults still visit and feed while flight skills develop
Fledgling After leaving the nest Mobile and feathered, but often smaller or less confident than an adult Parents may continue supervision and feeding outside the nest

The veterinary overview in the Merck Veterinary Manual describes a nutritional transition in seed-eating pigeons: over roughly four to seven days, parents move from producing mostly crop milk toward feeding mostly regurgitated seed. That interval is not a rule for every pigeon. Frugivorous species may rely on crop milk considerably longer.

Five squab pictures to look for—and how to caption them accurately

The five descriptions below are designed for clearly licensed photographs. The cited references do not grant reuse rights to their embedded images, so publication requires permission or a suitable license for every photograph. Show more than one developmental stage rather than presenting five nearly identical close-ups.

  1. Freshly hatched squab: Show the sparse yellow or white down and the bird’s helpless posture. Caption it as “Newly hatched Rock Pigeon squab, still covered in sparse down,” without assigning an exact age from appearance alone.
  2. Parent feeding a nestling: A photograph of an adult bending to feed a chick illustrates crop-milk transfer. Explain that both parents can feed the young and that the food comes from the crop, not a mammalian gland.
  3. Pinfeather stage: Show the contrast between soft down and emerging feather shafts. This is the visual middle of the nestling period, but avoid claiming “day 10” or another precise age unless the photographer documented the hatch date.
  4. Older feathering squab: Choose a bird with opened wing and body feathers, still visibly confined to or beside the nest. The caption can identify it as a feathering nestling and note that Rock Pigeon nestlings remain in the nest approximately 25–32 days.
  5. Recently fledged young pigeon: Show a fully feathered, mobile youngster on a safe perch or ground surface, with no handling. Explain that a fledgling may look smaller and less sleek than an adult while its parents remain nearby.

Use captions that identify the species only when the image supports that identification. “Pigeon squab” is safer than “three-day-old Rock Pigeon” when no verified hatch date exists. Keep nests, eggs and adults undisturbed during photography, and never stage a chick for a better composition.

When do baby pigeons leave the nest?

For Rock Pigeons, the best-supported answer is about 25–32 days after hatching. Cornell gives that range for the nestling period, and Audubon gives the same approximate interval for leaving the nest. It is a guide, not a countdown timer: the individual may leave earlier or later, and another pigeon species may follow a different schedule.

A young bird on the ground is not automatically abandoned. A fledgling that is fully feathered, alert and able to hop or fly short distances is usually being supervised by adults that stay out of immediate view. Keep people and pets away, watch from a distance and allow the parents to continue their care.

What to do if you find a baby pigeon

First, decide whether it is a fledgling or a nestling

  • Fledgling: Mostly or fully feathered, mobile, able to stand or hop, and possibly practicing short flights. Leave it where it is unless it is in immediate danger.
  • Nestling: Sparsely feathered, weak, unable to perch, or clearly too young to move away from hazards. If you can safely locate the original nest, return the bird to it; parents generally do not reject a chick merely because a person briefly touched it.

Remove hazards, not the bird’s natural care

Move cats, dogs and children away. If the bird is on a road, sidewalk edge or other immediate danger, place it only a short distance away in a shaded, sheltered spot where the parents can still find it. Then leave and observe from far enough away that adults will return.

Do not feed milk, bread or improvised formula

Crop milk is a specialized parental secretion, not ordinary dairy milk. Cornell’s baby-bird guidance specifically warns against feeding baby birds milk or bread and cautions that attempting to raise a wild bird can cause harm. Read Cornell’s “I’m Bringing Home a Baby Bird!” guidance before taking any action.

Call a licensed wildlife rehabilitator for injuries or true abandonment

Contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator if the bird is bleeding, cold, unable to stand, caught by a cat, has a visibly broken wing, or cannot be returned to its nest. Do not pour water into its beak or use feeding tools unless a qualified rehabilitator instructs you. Rehabilitation rules and contacts vary by location; Audubon’s birding FAQ explains general found-bird steps and the need to use local professional help.

Why baby pigeons are rarely seen in ordinary city walks

Adult Rock Pigeons are conspicuous because they feed and roost in public spaces. Squabs are different: they spend their vulnerable weeks in sheltered nests, often on ledges, bridges, roofs and building cavities. By the time a youngster appears in a plaza or garden, it may already be close to fledging or recently out of the nest. This hidden nestling period is why people sometimes think pigeons “have no babies.”

The combination of concealed nests, rapid feather growth and a 25–32-day nestling period means sightings are biased toward older young birds. A small, fluffy bird is not necessarily newly hatched, and a feathered youngster is not necessarily orphaned. Stage, behavior and immediate danger matter more than size alone.

Keeping the facts species-specific

“Pigeon” covers many species, and “dove” is a common name rather than a strict developmental category. Crop milk occurs in pigeons and doves, but the length of dependence on it varies with diet and species. The four-to-seven-day transition described for seed-eating birds in the Merck reference should not be applied to every squab, especially fruit-eating species.

Likewise, the 18-day incubation and 25–32-day nestling figures belong to Rock Pigeons. If a photograph comes from a different species, identify that species first and use its own documented life history. When the species is uncertain, describe visible development without attaching Rock Pigeon dates.

A final way to read a squab photograph

Look for three clues in order: feather coverage, mobility and context. Sparse down plus a limp posture suggests a very young nestling; pinfeathers and stronger balance indicate growth; full feathers with hopping or short flights indicate a fledgling. The nest, adult behavior and location add context, but none of them alone proves an exact age.

That approach keeps the “unbelievable” part of squab biology accurate: a bird that begins life nearly helpless can become a self-propelled fledgling in roughly a month, powered first by a crop secretion made by both parents and then by the changing diet appropriate to its species.
