In England’s pig-welfare code, that term has a specific meaning: a pig from birth until weaning. The first days are especially demanding because newborns have limited energy reserves, lose heat quickly and must find a teat and take in milk. Weaning is another sensitive point, and the recommended age depends on the guidance and jurisdiction being used.
What exactly is a piglet?
People use “baby pig” and “piglet” interchangeably in everyday speech. The England welfare code gives “piglet” a narrower, code-specific definition: a pig from birth until weaning. That is a useful legal and husbandry definition, but it is not a universal rule for every country or every document. Once a pig has been weaned, different guidance may describe it as a weaner or young pig rather than a piglet.

Age alone does not tell you how vulnerable an individual piglet is. A newborn has little stored energy and depends on warmth, access to the sow and successful nursing. A piglet that is chilled or misses milk can deteriorate quickly, which is why commercial and veterinary guidance treats the neonatal period as a high-attention stage rather than simply a smaller version of adult pig care.
Five unforgettable facts about baby pigs
1. Newborn piglets can become dangerously cold
Virginia Tech Extension explains that newborn pigs have limited energy reserves. Cold stress uses those reserves, leaving less energy available for movement and nursing. Cold and hunger can also make a piglet more likely to be overlain by the sow. “Overlain” means the sow lies on the piglet; it is a physical accident linked to the close contact of a litter and its mother, not a sign that the sow is deliberately aggressive.

This is why neonatal housing and observation focus on a warm, dry resting area and on whether every piglet is able to reach the udder. A heating mat appears in the University of Florida’s neonatal visual guide, but the picture demonstrates a use context, not a universal temperature setting or an endorsement of a particular product. Anyone caring for real piglets should use equipment and settings specified by a veterinarian or qualified livestock professional.
2. The first priority is finding a nipple and getting milk
The University of Florida guide describes a newborn piglet “looking for a nipple.” That rooting behavior is an immediate survival task: the piglet must locate the udder, attach and drink. Virginia Tech’s discussion links compromised milk intake with the risks faced by newborns, including weakness and a greater chance of chilling or being overlain.
In a litter, the strongest or most mobile piglets may reach the udder first, while a smaller or chilled piglet can fall behind. Observation is therefore about access, not just the presence of a sow. A piglet lying apart, unable to keep warm or repeatedly failing to nurse needs prompt assessment by someone trained in neonatal pig care. 3. Overlay, starvation and scours account for a large share of deaths in one cited study
Virginia Tech Extension cites Lay et al. (2002) for a breakdown of preweaning piglet deaths: 48.1% attributed to overlay, 15.3% to starvation and 13.3% to scours. Those are figures from that study as reported by the extension publication; they are not a current universal rate for every farm, breed or housing system.
| Cause in the cited breakdown | Share of preweaning deaths | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Overlay | 48.1% | Study figure reported by Virginia Tech Extension; not a universal modern benchmark. |
| Starvation | 15.3% | Study figure reported by Virginia Tech Extension; associated with inadequate milk intake or access. |
| Scours | 13.3% | Study figure reported by Virginia Tech Extension; “scours” is a livestock term for diarrhea. |
The practical lesson is not that one number predicts what will happen in a particular litter. It is that preventable management problems can overlap: a cold, hungry piglet is less mobile, and a weak piglet may have more difficulty reaching milk or avoiding danger. Farm teams use observation, housing design and veterinary support to reduce those interacting risks.
4. “When should a piglet be weaned?” has more than one correct answer
Weaning guidance is not expressed identically in every document. The World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) says piglets should be weaned at three weeks of age or older, unless a veterinarian recommends an earlier change for disease control. England’s welfare code generally bars weaning before 28 days, while allowing specified exceptions in the code. These statements belong to different guidance and legal contexts, so they should not be treated as a direct contradiction.

For a real herd, the applicable national or regional rule, the farm’s health plan and veterinary advice determine the lawful and welfare-appropriate schedule. A number copied from a different jurisdiction is not enough.

WOAH states that “Weaning is a stressful time for sows and piglets and good management is required.” The transition changes the piglet’s social setting, environment and access to the sow at the same time. WOAH recommends clean, dry and warm housing and close monitoring of newly weaned pigs, with particular attention during their first two weeks after weaning.
Monitoring means checking that the group is settling, that the environment remains suitable and that concerns are acted on quickly under the farm’s veterinary plan. It does not mean applying a single universal routine: facilities, disease-control requirements and local welfare rules differ.

Five precious piglet picture ideas—and what to look for
The University of Florida neonatal guide contains photographs and captions that show newborn piglets, including a piglet on a heating mat looking for a nipple, freshly delivered piglets with umbilical cords and a nursing scene. The guide’s captions establish those subjects, but image-reuse rights were not established. Check the page’s licensing terms or contact the rights holder before republishing any of its photographs.
The five entries below work as a humane, photo-led gallery plan. The first three describe documented scenes in that guide; the final two are composition ideas that require separately sourced, rights-cleared photographs. None should be presented as permission-cleared imagery without verifying the license.

A close view of a newborn piglet resting on the mat while turning toward the udder. The educational point is the combination of warmth and rooting behavior; do not infer a safe temperature from the photograph.
- Freshly delivered piglets with umbilical cords. This frame captures how recently born piglets look before the cord has dried and detached. It is a reminder that “newborn” is a physiological stage, not merely a cute size category.
- A nursing scene. A nursing litter lets readers see why access matters: piglets are actively positioned at the sow rather than simply standing nearby. A caption should identify the scene without claiming that one photograph proves every piglet has received enough milk.
- Rooting close-up. Commission or license a separate image showing a piglet’s snout searching along the sow’s underside. Use the caption to explain that the behavior is directed toward finding a teat and nursing, not a performance or trick.
- Warm, dry resting group. Source a separate, rights-cleared image of recently weaned pigs resting in suitable housing. The visual should support WOAH’s emphasis on clean, dry and warm conditions without implying that the photograph alone verifies a facility’s compliance.
Photographs should be handled as welfare documentation as well as decoration. Avoid images that encourage readers to handle newborns unnecessarily, separate a piglet from its mother for a better shot or copy an equipment setup without professional guidance.

What these facts mean for humane care
Warmth is a management need, not a novelty accessory
Because newborn piglets have limited energy reserves, a warm, dry resting area can be important to survival. The appropriate design depends on the housing system, litter and local conditions. A mat, lamp or other device should be selected and installed under specialist direction, with safeguards against burns, overheating, electrical hazards and crowding. There is no single setting that can be safely prescribed from a photograph.
Observe the litter, not just the mother
A sow may appear calm while an individual piglet is failing to nurse. Observation should include whether piglets can reach the udder, remain warm and rejoin the litter. If a piglet is weak, chilled, repeatedly separated or unable to drink, contact the farm’s veterinarian or an experienced stockperson promptly rather than relying on internet instructions.
Use local rules for weaning decisions
The WOAH recommendation and England’s code illustrate why location matters. Before changing a weaning plan, check the current rules for your country or region and the requirements of any assurance scheme that applies to the farm. A veterinarian may also recommend a different timing for disease-control reasons, as WOAH’s guidance recognizes.
Plan the first two weeks after weaning
Newly weaned pigs need suitable housing and observation during the transition. Keep the area clean, dry and warm, and follow the herd health plan for feed, water, grouping and disease monitoring. Escalate abnormalities according to veterinary instructions; do not wait for a problem to become severe because the change of environment is already stressful.
Common misconceptions about baby pigs
- “Piglet” always has one legal definition. The England code’s birth-to-weaning definition is jurisdiction-specific, not a worldwide legal standard.
- A cute photograph shows normal care. An image can show a behavior or setting, but it cannot establish temperature, milk intake, health status or legal compliance.
- One weaning age fits every farm. WOAH and England’s code state different minimums because they are different guidance contexts; local law and veterinary advice control the decision.
- Cold is merely uncomfortable. For a newborn with limited reserves, cold stress can consume energy needed for movement and nursing and can increase the risk of overlay.
- Statistics predict every litter. The 48.1%, 15.3% and 13.3% figures come from Lay et al. (2002), as cited by Virginia Tech Extension, and should be read as study-specific attribution rather than a universal mortality forecast.
A responsible way to enjoy piglet pictures
Choose images that show natural behavior, keep mother and litter together when appropriate and identify the photographer or rights holder. Verify permission before publication, especially when using photographs from educational veterinary pages. Captions should explain what readers can actually see—rooting, nursing, a cord or a resting area—without making medical claims the image cannot support.
Baby pigs are compelling because their first weeks combine intense dependence with rapid change. Understanding the limits of a photograph, the vulnerability created by cold and hunger, and the jurisdiction-specific nature of weaning guidance makes the subject more than a collection of cute faces: it becomes a clear, humane introduction to piglet welfare.
