A baby raccoon is called a kit. Newborn kits have a thin greyish-brown coat; the familiar dark mask and striped tail usually become visible within a few days. A kit found alone is not automatically orphaned: its mother may be foraging, moving the litter, or waiting for people and pets to leave. Watch from a distance and call a licensed wildlife rehabilitator before moving a healthy kit.
This guide explains what kits look like, how they develop, which signs indicate an emergency, how to respond without causing harm, and how to enjoy raccoon photographs without approaching or disturbing wildlife.

What is a baby raccoon called?
The correct term is kit. Kits are born helpless and depend on their mother for warmth, protection, food, and lessons that will eventually let them survive independently. Newborns are covered by a sparse greyish-brown coat. Their mask and tail rings generally appear within days, and older kits look increasingly like small adult raccoons.
Size can help with a quick field impression, but it is not an age chart. Toronto Wildlife Centre advises treating an animal larger than a regular-sized house cat as an adult for practical rescue decisions. Individual growth varies, so do not estimate an exact age from size alone. See the centre’s identification guidance and photographs at Toronto Wildlife Centre’s raccoon page.

How kits develop
They start completely dependent
A mother raccoon chooses a protected den, such as a tree cavity, hollow log, or sheltered space in or around a building. She keeps the kits warm, carries or guides them when necessary, and supplies their food. At this stage, a kit cannot be judged ready for release simply because it is moving around.
Exploration comes before independence
As the young grow, they spend more time outside the den and accompany their mother. They learn where to find food, how to navigate, and how to respond to danger by following her. Kits may remain with their mother for several months. Walking, climbing, or eating solid food therefore does not prove that a kit can live safely alone. The developmental overview from Roanoke Wildlife Rescue does not establish precise week-by-week milestones, so reliable guidance avoids assigning an exact age to each behavior.
Why the mother may be out of sight
A mother can leave a den to forage, wait nearby while people or dogs pass, or move young between den sites. She may return only after the area becomes quiet. A kit calling from a yard, driveway, or porch can still be under active maternal care.

| What you observe | What it can mean | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Small body, greyish-brown coat, emerging mask and tail rings | Typical early kit appearance | Observe from a distance; do not handle for a closer look |
| Alert, warm, moving normally, with no visible wound | May be temporarily separated while the mother forages or relocates the litter | Keep the area quiet and ask a rehabilitator whether reunification is appropriate |
| Cold, weak, lethargic, bleeding, or unable to move normally | Possible injury, illness, or dangerous exposure | Seek prompt professional advice |
| Repeated crying or wandering without settling | Could be displaced, trapped, or separated from the mother | Call a licensed wildlife rehabilitator rather than taking it home |
| Contact with a cat or dog | Hidden punctures or crushing injuries are possible even when the fur looks intact | Request urgent professional assessment |
These observations are triage clues, not a diagnosis. A single posture, noise, or time-of-day sighting cannot establish disease or abandonment.

I found a baby raccoon: what should I do first?
- Keep your distance. Bring children indoors, leash dogs, and keep cats away. Do not crowd the kit or block the route to a den.
- Look without touching. Note the location, approximate size, alertness, visible injuries, and whether it is cold, wet, trapped, or repeatedly crying.
- Call a licensed wildlife rehabilitator. Explain what you see and follow local instructions before moving a healthy kit or attempting a reunion. Rehabilitation rules and available services differ by jurisdiction.
- Give the mother a quiet opportunity to return. A rehabilitator may recommend watching from a hidden, distant position while people and pets stay away. The mother can delay her approach if she sees or smells people nearby.
- Move only when instructed. If a professional confirms that temporary containment is necessary, ask exactly how to do it and where to transport the kit.
The decision framework used by Roanoke Wildlife Rescue is simple: a healthy, alert kit with no known danger may need quiet observation and professional guidance, while an injured, cold, weak, or exposed kit needs prompt assistance.
When a kit needs urgent help
Contact a rehabilitator promptly if any of the following applies:
- Bleeding, an open wound, swelling, burns, or obvious trauma.
- Coldness, weakness, collapse, unusual lethargy, or trouble breathing.
- Inability to walk, climb, orient itself, or move a limb normally.
- Persistent crying, wandering, or repeated attempts to approach people.
- Flies or maggots on the body.
- A confirmed dead mother or another situation in which no adult can return.
- Any capture, bite, or mouthing by a cat or dog.
Cat and dog attacks can leave tiny punctures hidden under dense fur, and bacteria can cause serious infection. Do not wait to see whether a kit “seems fine” after pet contact; describe the incident to the rehabilitator and follow the emergency instructions.

What not to feed or give a baby raccoon
Do not offer food, water, cow’s milk, formula, or other liquids unless a licensed professional specifically directs you. A chilled or injured kit can aspirate liquid, and an inappropriate diet can cause dangerous digestive problems. Feeding also makes reunification and later release more difficult.

Do not keep a kit as a pet or try to raise it yourself. Human contact can habituate a young raccoon, interfere with the skills it must learn from its mother, and create legal and welfare problems. Roanoke Wildlife Rescue states, “The goal of wildlife rehabilitation is not to tame a baby raccoon—it is to prepare the animal to live successfully in the wild.”
Temporary containment and transport
Only contain a kit when a rehabilitator tells you to do so. Use a secure, ventilated container that the animal cannot climb out of; keep it in a dark, quiet room away from children and pets. Avoid repeated checking, photographs with flash, and handling. Do not improvise heating or place the container directly against a heat source. Ask the professional how to provide safe warmth for that animal’s condition and how quickly it should be transported.
Write down the exact location and circumstances of discovery. Tell the rehabilitator whether the kit was found near a den, touched by a pet, exposed to rain or cold, or in contact with a person. Those details affect whether reunification, medical treatment, or another response is appropriate.

Raccoons are classified as rabies-vector wildlife by the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University. Avoid bare-handed contact with any raccoon, and never attempt to test whether an animal is “friendly.” If a kit bites or scratches someone, or saliva may have entered broken skin, eyes, mouth, or another open wound, wash the area thoroughly with soap and running water and contact local public-health or medical services immediately. The correct reporting and post-exposure procedures depend on your location; Tufts’ guidance is available at What To Do If You Found a Raccoon.

Do not diagnose rabies from a single behavior. A raccoon seen in daylight is not automatically rabid. The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission notes that daytime sightings are increasingly common and that sick-looking behavior can have causes other than rabies. Distance, barriers, and professional assessment are safer than trying to identify a disease yourself.

Often, a mother may return if the kit is healthy and the area is quiet, but no one should promise a reunion without considering the circumstances. She may be waiting for people and pets to leave, foraging farther away, or moving other young first. A licensed rehabilitator can decide whether a reunion attempt is suitable and explain how to monitor it without standing over the kit.
Never place a kit directly into an unfamiliar den, carry it to another location, or leave it overnight based only on an assumption that the mother will find it. If the kit is cold, injured, repeatedly distressed, or known to have lost its mother, professional intervention takes priority over waiting.

For your own photographs, use a long lens or photograph from inside a building or vehicle, remain well away from the den, and avoid flash, bait, calls, or any attempt to draw a kit closer. Never touch, pet, feed, corner, or stage a close-up. A picture is not worth delaying a rescue or causing a mother to abandon a site temporarily.
Local laws and professional help
Wildlife possession, transport, rehabilitation licensing, and rabies reporting requirements vary by state, province, country, and municipality. A general internet answer cannot replace local instructions. Search for a licensed wildlife rehabilitator through your wildlife agency, humane organization, or veterinary referral network, and ask whether the person is authorized to handle raccoons in your jurisdiction.
When you call, provide your location, the kit’s condition, whether a mother has been seen, the length of time you have watched, and any contact with a pet or person. Do not conceal an exposure or attempt treatment first; accurate information helps the professional choose safe instructions.
Quick reference: healthy separation or emergency?
| Situation | Most useful next step |
|---|---|
| Alert kit, no injury, mother possibly nearby | Keep people and pets away; contact a rehabilitator for observation and reunion guidance. |
| Kit is cold, weak, lethargic, injured, trapped, or repeatedly distressed | Seek prompt rehabilitator assistance; do not feed or give water. |
| Cat or dog caught or mouthed the kit | Request urgent assessment even if no wound is visible. |
| Person bitten, scratched, or exposed to saliva | Wash the exposure and contact medical or public-health services for location-specific advice. |
| Raccoon active in daylight but otherwise unknown | Keep distance; daylight alone does not prove rabies. |
The safest approach combines accurate identification with restraint: recognize the animal as a kit, assume the mother may still be caring for it, and let a licensed professional determine whether intervention is needed.
