Baby squirrels look helpless, but their behavior follows a precise developmental timetable—and a youngster on the ground is not automatically orphaned. Here are five species-aware facts, illustrated kit scenes, and the safest response if you encounter one.
1. Every newborn squirrel starts life with its eyes closed
California Department of Fish and Wildlife guidance says all baby squirrels are born with their eyes closed. A newborn cannot use sight to find danger, food, or shelter, so it depends on its mother for food, warmth, and survival. This applies broadly to squirrels, even though species differ in nesting habits and development speed.

A closed-eyed kit may appear unusually still when it is conserving energy or sleeping. The important point is not to judge its condition from its helpless appearance alone. Assess whether it is visibly injured or distressed, keep people and pets away, and use local wildlife-authority guidance before intervening.

Why the mother matters
Mother squirrels provide more than milk. They supply body heat, protection, and repeated trips between the nest and feeding areas. Removing a healthy youngster can therefore deprive it of care it would otherwise receive. California DFW states: “Mother squirrels will readily try to reunite with their babies.”

2. The nest depends on which squirrel you are looking at
“Squirrel nest” is not one universal design. California Department of Fish and Wildlife distinguishes tree squirrels, which build nests high in trees, from ground squirrels, which commonly use underground dens. Baby ground squirrels are rarely seen above ground, while a tree-squirrel kit may be found beneath a tree after falling or after the nest has been disturbed.
Tree-squirrel nests
A high nest gives a mother tree squirrel a sheltered place to raise young. If a healthy tree-squirrel baby is on the ground, California DFW says a reader may try to return it to the nest or place it on a nearby branch. Keep children and pets away while allowing the mother an opportunity to retrieve it.
Ground-squirrel dens
Ground squirrels commonly raise young in underground burrows. A healthy ground-squirrel baby with its eyes still closed may be returned to the burrow if the den can be located safely. Do not assume that a kit found above ground belongs in a tree nest; species identification changes the appropriate response.

3. Gray squirrel eyes open at about four weeks
For gray squirrels specifically, both the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources place eye opening at approximately four weeks. “Approximately” matters: individual development can vary, and the timing should not be applied automatically to every squirrel species.
Eye opening is one milestone in a sequence, not a signal that a young squirrel can survive alone. A kit may see you clearly and still require its mother for nutrition, warmth, and protection. Avoid handling it merely because it appears alert.
What the age estimate can—and cannot—tell you
- It can help wildlife professionals estimate a gray squirrel’s developmental stage.
- It cannot establish the exact age of an individual animal.
- It does not prove that a kit is orphaned or ready for release.
- It should not be used as a feeding or home-rearing schedule.
4. Young gray squirrels explore before they are independent
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says young gray squirrels may begin exploring outside the nest at around six weeks. Virginia DWR similarly reports that young are often out of the nest by six weeks. Seeing a small squirrel on a branch or the ground can therefore be a normal part of growing up, rather than evidence that a person should take it home.

Exploration is not independence
A kit practicing climbing, moving between branches, or investigating the ground is testing its environment while still relying on parental care. Watch for the difference between normal movement and a clearly injured, weak, or otherwise distressed animal. If distress is present, contact a local wildlife rehabilitation facility rather than trying to raise the squirrel yourself.

Use the location-specific instructions from your wildlife authority for reunification; procedures can differ by species and region.
5. Leaving the nest does not mean a gray squirrel is ready to live alone
Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources says gray squirrels are on their own in the wild at eight to nine weeks. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says gray squirrels are weaned by ten weeks. These are separate milestones from separate agency guidance: being out of the nest, being independent, and being fully weaned should not be collapsed into one universal age.

Why species and source matter
The age ranges above are for gray squirrels, not a timetable for all squirrels. Ground squirrels and other tree-squirrel species have different life histories. Even within gray squirrels, weather, food availability, health, and individual development can affect behavior. Treat agency ages as approximate field guidance, not as a guarantee that any particular kit is safe to handle.
Five respectful kit-picture ideas
The visual concept for each image should show a kit in its natural setting without encouraging contact. Use a wildlife-agency, licensed rehabilitation-organization, or clearly licensed image provider, and verify the species, age description, permission, and context before publication. Captions should never imply that a pictured animal is available to approach, feed, or keep.

Do not assume the baby is orphaned. Start by keeping children and pets away and looking at the situation without crowding the animal. California DFW, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and Virginia DWR all emphasize that intervention should be guided by the animal’s condition, species, and location.

If it is a healthy baby tree squirrel
- Keep people, dogs, and cats away from the area.
- If the youngster is on the ground, try to return it to its nest or place it on a nearby branch, following local wildlife-authority instructions.
- Give the mother an opportunity to reunite with it while you remain at a distance.
- If the animal appears injured, weak, or otherwise distressed, contact a local wildlife rehabilitation facility.
If it is a healthy baby ground squirrel with eyes closed
- Keep the area quiet and prevent children and pets from approaching.
- Try to locate the burrow and return the youngster to it only when doing so is safe and consistent with local guidance.
- Contact a permitted or licensed wildlife rehabilitator if the kit is distressed or you cannot safely reunite it.
What not to do
- Do not give a found baby squirrel food or water. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service specifically advises against it.
- Do not feed or water wildlife without trained-professional guidance; California DFW gives the same warning.
- Do not keep a healthy kit as a pet or attempt home rearing.
- Do not move a ground-squirrel baby into a tree nest or treat every squirrel as a tree squirrel.
Wildlife rules and rehabilitator networks are location-specific. If reunification is not clearly safe or the animal is injured, use your local wildlife authority or a permitted/licensed rehabilitator for instructions.
What these facts mean in practice
A baby squirrel can look tiny, quiet, and vulnerable while still being exactly where its mother expects it to be. Closed eyes are normal for newborns; nest location depends on species; gray squirrel development proceeds through approximate milestones; and exploration often precedes independence. The safest response is therefore observation, hazard reduction, and species-appropriate reunification—not feeding, collecting, or guessing at a home-care routine.
