A baby tiger is called a cub. Newborn cubs begin life blind, dependent on their mother for milk, warmth and protection. Over the next two years or more, they develop their senses, eat meat, practise hunting and learn the skills needed to live independently. The five photo briefs and facts below separate cub development from facts about tigers generally.

What is a baby tiger called?
A young tiger is a cub. “Cub” describes a tiger during its dependent early life, regardless of subspecies. Cubs are born after a gestation of roughly three to four months, but the exact timing and development of an individual can vary.

Fact 1: Are tiger cubs born blind?
Yes. Mandai Wildlife Reserve’s Singapore Zoo educational resource says newborn tiger cubs are blind. Their eyes are closed at birth, so they cannot use sight to follow their mother or explore their surroundings. They depend on her body heat, scent, touch and milk while their senses mature.

The same resource gives an approximate birth weight of about 1.2 kilograms (2.6 pounds). That is a general educational figure, not a promise that every cub will weigh exactly that amount. Birth weight can differ among individuals and circumstances. Adults should present the number as “about” rather than as a required target for a healthy cub.

How sight changes the cub’s early days
Blindness makes the first period especially dependent. A mother remains the cub’s reliable source of food and physical security. As the eyes open and coordination improves, the cub can begin moving farther from the den, playing with littermates and responding to the world around it. Those visible changes do not happen on one guaranteed day for every tiger.
Fact 2: How many cubs does a tiger have?
A mother commonly has more than one cub. Mandai describes a typical litter as two to four cubs. The Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute also gives an average of two to four, while recording a broader possible range of one to seven. “Typical” and “possible” are different ideas: a single-cub litter and a litter larger than four can occur, even though two to four is a useful usual range in these sources.

Littermates provide company and opportunities for play, but they do not all grow at exactly the same pace. A photograph showing several cubs should not be used to infer their precise ages, sex or family history without a reliable caption from the photographer, zoo or conservation project.

Fact 3: What does a tiger cub eat?
The mother does most of the feeding work at first. Mandai’s Singapore Zoo resource says a mother nurses her cubs for about six months. It also says cubs begin eating meat at around two months. These milestones overlap: tasting or eating meat does not mean nursing stops immediately.
A cub’s first meat is part of a gradual transition, not an instant switch to an adult diet. The mother’s milk continues to supply nutrition while the cub’s teeth, jaw strength and digestive ability develop. A keeper’s feeding plan for a captive cub may differ from the timing of a wild family, so the figures should be taught as approximate developmental markers.

Mother-led care
Tiger cubs are raised by their mother. She nurses them, guards the den area and later guides them toward food and movement outside the den. The father is not described in the cited cub-care material as the animal providing this routine daily care, so avoid presenting a two-parent household as the standard tiger family pattern.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFact 4: When do tiger cubs leave their mother?
There is no single “leaving day.” Different sources describe different steps in the process:
| Developmental step | Timing reported in the sources | What the milestone means |
|---|---|---|
| Start eating meat | Around 2 months, according to Mandai | Meat is introduced while nursing still continues. |
| Join hunting trips | About 4 months, according to Mandai | The mother takes cubs along so they can observe and practise in a supervised setting. |
| Remain with the mother while learning to hunt successfully | Usually 18–24 months, according to the Smithsonian | The cub is developing practical hunting ability rather than merely watching. |
| Reach full independence | About 2–3 years, according to the Smithsonian | Independence follows the learning period and is not identical to the first hunting trip. |
These timings should not be collapsed into one claim. A four-month-old cub accompanying its mother is still dependent; an 18-to-24-month-old may be capable of successful hunting but remain with her; and “full independence” can take longer. Conditions in the habitat, prey availability and the individual tiger all affect the pace.

Why the mother’s lessons matter
Young tigers must learn more than how to chase. They need to follow, hide, judge distance, handle prey and move safely through their territory. Watching a mother provides information that a cub could not gain from eating alone. This is why “learning to hunt” and “leaving the mother” are separate milestones.

Tiger cubs have a striped coat, and each tiger’s stripe pattern is unique. The Smithsonian says researchers can use those patterns to identify individual tigers in the wild. Stripes function like a visual identity pattern: two animals may share the same broad orange, black and pale colour scheme, but their markings are not identical.

Why stripes help in the wild
Researchers can compare photographs or observations of stripe arrangements to tell animals apart. This is especially useful when a tiger travels, disappears for a time or is photographed by different teams. A child-friendly explanation is that stripes are as individual as a fingerprint pattern, while remembering that they are visible markings rather than fingerprints.
Optional fact about tigers generally: Can tigers swim?
Tigers are strong swimmers. National Geographic Kids says they swim well, and the Smithsonian reports that tigers can cross rivers and lakes. This is a fact about tigers as a species, not evidence that a newborn cub can swim. A very young cub remains under its mother’s protection and should not be portrayed crossing water independently.
Five-picture checklist for families and teachers
- Choose one image of a cub beside its mother for scale and care.
- Choose one close portrait for eyes, ears and facial features.
- Choose one image where the stripe pattern is easy to see.
- Choose one litter photograph showing cubs together.
- Choose one habitat image showing movement and exploration.
- For every image, retain the photographer’s name, source, location if verified, caption and licence or written permission.
- Never label a cub’s age, sex, subspecies or birthplace from appearance alone.
