Bacterial infections in cats are not one disease. The body system involved, the place the infection started, and the underlying cause determine the signs and the treatment. Some infections stay local, such as an abscess after a bite or puncture. Others involve the urinary tract, the respiratory tract, or, less often, the bloodstream. Many of the same signs also come from viral, parasitic, or noninfectious problems, so a veterinarian needs to confirm whether bacteria are involved before choosing treatment.
Where bacterial infections come from
Bacteria are a normal part of a cat’s body. Many live harmlessly on the skin, in the airways, in the mouth, in the digestive tract, and in the urinary tract. Others live in soil or water. An infection develops when bacteria reach a place they should not be, or when conditions allow normally harmless bacteria to multiply and cause damage.
Three routes account for most of the situations owners encounter:
- Wounds. A puncture can carry bacteria beneath the skin, where they can trap and form an abscess, a pocket of pus.
- Ascending urinary infection. Bacteria usually enter the urinary tract through the urethra and travel upward toward the bladder.
- Damaged tissue. Infections can develop inside organs when tissue has been damaged, including after surgery.
An infection may stay local, as an abscess does, or spread. When bacteria reach the bloodstream (bacteremia), the infection can progress to sepsis.

Who is more at risk
According to Merck Veterinary Manual’s pet-owner guidance, healthy adult cats are relatively resistant to urinary infection. The following factors raise the risk. They are reasons for closer attention, not a diagnosis:
- Older age
- Impaired immunity
- Long-term steroid use
- Diabetes
- Thyroid disease
- Kidney disease
- Dilute urine
- Impaired urine flow
Signs by body system
Symptoms follow the site of infection. A sign such as straining in the litter box or sneezing can come from several causes, so the patterns below are a reason to contact a veterinarian, not a way to confirm an infection at home.
| Body system | Typical signs | Important caveat |
|---|---|---|
| Wounds and skin abscesses | A pus-filled pocket, often after a bite or puncture | Some abscesses need surgical opening and drainage, not medication alone |
| Urinary tract | Frequent urination, painful or difficult urination, urinating outside the litter box, blood in the urine. Some cats show no signs. | Similar signs can have noninfectious causes, especially in young cats |
| Respiratory tract | Sneezing, nasal discharge, conjunctivitis, tearing, salivation, oral ulceration, fever | Feline respiratory disease complex commonly involves viruses; bacteria are usually a secondary complication |
| Skin | Itching, redness, scale, crusting, odor, hair loss, discharge | These signs occur with many forms of dermatitis and do not identify bacteria as the cause |
| Bloodstream and whole body | Severe, whole-body illness when infection spreads | Sepsis and septic shock are emergencies; see the emergency section below |
How veterinarians diagnose bacterial infections
Diagnosis starts with the cat’s history and a physical examination. The tests that follow depend on the suspected site. Symptoms alone cannot show whether bacteria are involved.

Urinary infections
For suspected bacterial cystitis, Merck describes the following sequence:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- The veterinarian collects a urine sample.
- The sample is analyzed by urinalysis.
- A bacterial culture is run to identify the organism. Culture results can help show which drugs are likely to be effective.
Merck’s professional-level reference describes quantitative aerobic urine culture as the diagnostic gold standard for this condition.
Respiratory disease
In feline respiratory disease complex, laboratory tests can help identify which agents are involved. Because the signs overlap and the complex is not simply a bacterial illness, testing is used to sort out the causes rather than to assume a bacterial one.

Skin disease
For dermatitis, the history and physical examination help define the cause. Allergens, parasites, trauma, irritants, fungal or viral infection, and systemic disorders can all produce skin inflammation, and a secondary bacterial or yeast infection can develop on top of them. If the skin does not improve, the veterinarian needs to reassess both the trigger and whether a secondary infection is present.
How bacterial infections in cats are treated
No single antibiotic, dose, or duration applies to bacterial infections in cats, and this article does not provide one. A veterinarian decides whether an antibiotic is appropriate, which drug to use, and for how long, based on the diagnosis, the infection site, its severity, and the cat’s overall health. Do not give leftover antibiotics from an earlier illness or from another animal.

Some abscesses respond to antibiotics. Others need surgical opening and drainage, which is performed by a veterinary team, sometimes alongside medication.

Urinary infections
Antibiotics for urinary infection are used after a veterinarian has confirmed the diagnosis, and culture results can guide the choice of drug. Recurrent or persistent infection may signal an underlying problem, such as one of the risk factors listed above, so a return of signs warrants another veterinary assessment.
Respiratory disease
Treatment of feline respiratory disease is largely supportive. Antimicrobials may be used when a secondary bacterial infection is present. They do not treat the viral components of the illness, so antibiotics should not be presented as a cure for the complex.

What the evidence does and does not establish
No reliable overall prevalence figure for bacterial infections across the cat population is available from the veterinary references cited here, so this article does not quote one. Figures for dogs, including urinary disease in dogs, should not be read as feline statistics.
The Merck Veterinary Manual pet-owner pages consulted for this overview were last updated at different times: the general overview of bacterial infections in March 2026, the feline respiratory disease page in November 2024, and the urinary and dermatitis pages in September 2024.
