Bali Tourists Reminded About Rabies After Local Man Dies Following Dog Bite

A reported 2025 death in Buleleng was not a new Bali outbreak alert. Here’s what travelers should do immediately after a bite or scratch and how clinicians assess rabies treatment.

A Buleleng man’s death after a reported stray-dog bite was reported in February 2025—not as a new alert. The case is a reminder for Bali visitors: wash any bite or scratch from a potentially rabid animal with soap and clean running water for at least 15 minutes, then seek urgent medical care. Rabies can be prevented after exposure with timely treatment, but once symptoms begin it is almost invariably fatal.

What happened in Buleleng?

PerthNow reported on 27 February 2025 that a 35-year-old man from Buleleng died in hospital on the preceding Monday, about six months after a stray dog bit him at Pancasari Market in Sukasada District. The report said he washed the wound but did not report the bite to authorities. It quoted Buleleng Regional Hospital director Dr Putu Arya Nugraha identifying the place and circumstances of the bite. A separate Indonesian report described the death as a suspected rabies case; the reports reviewed do not establish a laboratory-confirmed diagnosis. PerthNow’s report

This is a historical case, not evidence of a newly declared Bali outbreak. The CDC’s Indonesia traveler-health page, accessed 4 October 2026, notes increased human rabies cases in West Timor; that is not a Bali-specific outbreak notice. What should I do if an animal bites or scratches me in Bali?

  1. Wash the wound immediately. Use soap and clean running water for at least 15 minutes, even if the wound looks small. The World Health Organization says to wash immediately and always after a bite or scratch from a potentially rabid animal. WHO rabies fact sheet
  2. Get urgent medical assessment. Contact a medical provider or go to a hospital promptly. CDC advises immediate care after being bitten, scratched, or licked by an unfamiliar or wild animal. Do not wait to see whether symptoms develop.
  3. Let a clinician assess the exposure. A medical professional will determine whether post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is indicated. PEP may include wound care and rabies vaccine; rabies immunoglobulin or monoclonal antibodies may also be needed, depending on the exposure and vaccination history. CDC: Rabies post-exposure prophylaxis

Do not decide that you are safe based only on an animal’s appearance, and do not try to manage a possible rabies exposure on your own. Rabies causes tens of thousands of deaths annually, and once clinical symptoms appear the disease is fatal in 100% of cases, according to WHO’s 2026 fact sheet. Timely, appropriate PEP can prevent disease after exposure. WHO rabies fact sheet

Do I need rabies shots after a dog bite in Bali?

Not everyone exposed to an animal needs the same treatment. A clinician assesses the kind of contact, the animal, the wound and your previous rabies vaccination, then decides whether PEP is needed and what it should include. A bite, scratch, or saliva contacting broken skin or the eyes or mouth warrants prompt medical advice; do not wait for symptoms or use the animal’s apparent health to rule out risk.

Indonesia’s Ministry of Health reported 185,359 animal-transmitted rabies bite cases and 122 human rabies deaths in 2024. Through 7 March 2025, it reported 13,453 bite cases and 25 human deaths. These are historical national figures with the stated reporting periods, not current Bali-specific counts. Indonesia Ministry of Health: rabies information

What do local bite figures tell visitors?

Buleleng Regency’s Health Department reported that the regency averaged 600–700 animal-transmitted rabies bite incidents per month during the five-year period described in April 2026, and recorded 2,281 incidents through March 2026. These are bite incidents, not confirmed rabies infections; they should not be read as a count of people diagnosed with rabies. Buleleng Regency Health Department
