A reported shark sighting temporarily closed North Cottesloe Beach and The Cove on 23 September 2026. The Town of Cottesloe said the beaches had reopened by 10:40 am after no further sightings. Its notice described a shark, but did not confirm it was a great white.
What happened at Cottesloe
According to the Town of Cottesloe’s 23 September notice, a member of the public reported seeing a shark estimated at 4 m long, about 50 m offshore at North Cottesloe Beach. The Town said both North Cottesloe and The Cove beaches were closed, both shark alarms had sounded, and a helicopter was circling.

In an update timestamped 10:40 am, the Town said both beaches had reopened because there had been no further sightings. That update describes the status at that time; check current notices before visiting.
Was it a great white shark?
The Town’s notice called it a “shark” and did not identify the species. The available official account therefore does not establish that the animal was a great white. The reported size and distance are estimates attributed to the Town’s notice, not an independent species identification.

What beachgoers should do
The Town’s beach guidance says: “When beaches are closed due to shark sighting or incident, please abide by signage and do not enter the water.” Follow closure signage and instructions from local government rangers or Surf Life Saving WA. The Town lists shark warning systems at The Cove surf break and North Cottesloe, as well as beach emergency number signs, a protected swimming enclosure and beach patrols.
For current conditions, distinguish a local beach closure from a broader regional shark warning. The Town’s notices and on-site signs provide local status; SharkSmart WA reports regional sightings and tagged detections. Its Perth metropolitan warning dated 1 October 2026 advised additional caution amid continued reported sightings and tagged detections. That regional warning does not show that either Cottesloe beach remained closed after the September incident.
