Balinese Cat Colors Explained: 11 Point and Pattern Varieties by CFA and TICA

Balinese cats are not eleven separate breeds. They are a longhaired variety of the Siamese, and the “11 types” are coat-color and pattern examples used by cat registries. The clearest way to identify one is to note its point color, whether the points are solid, lynx (tabby) or tortie, and whether white, silver or smoke modifies the pattern. CFA and TICA organize these names differently, so the registry is part of an accurate description.

What “types of Balinese cats” actually means

The Balinese is a breed variety, not a collection of eleven independent breeds. The Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA) calls it a longhaired variety of the Siamese and Colorpoint Shorthair, while The International Cat Association (TICA) places it in the Siamese Breed Group as a longhaired Siamese variety. Those descriptions explain why a Balinese has Siamese-style colorpointing and a silky, longer coat rather than a separate body type for every color name.

“Point” refers to where the darker pigment is concentrated. TICA describes color on the mask or face, ears, legs and tail, set against a contrasting creamy-white body. A kitten’s body may look very pale while its extremities show the strongest color. The pattern is temperature-sensitive, so the cooler parts of the body develop more pigment; the visible contrast can change as the cat matures.

The lists below are an editorial set of eleven recognizable varieties, not a universal worldwide standard. TICA’s profile includes eight named point colors plus combinations involving white, silver or smoke, lynx points and tortie points. CFA separates its Balinese and Javanese divisions: its Balinese division lists seal, chocolate, lilac and blue points, while its Javanese division contains additional solid-color, lynx and parti-color point classes. CFA says Javanese became a division of the Balinese breed on May 1, 2008. Always identify the registry when a pedigree or show classification matters.

The 11 Balinese color and pattern varieties

Variety What you see Registry context
Seal point Deep brown-black points with a pale body Listed by TICA and in CFA’s Balinese division
Chocolate point Warm milk-chocolate points, usually softer than seal Listed by TICA and CFA’s Balinese division
Blue point Cool slate-blue or blue-gray points Listed by TICA and CFA’s Balinese division
Lilac point Very pale, frosty gray with pinkish tones Listed by TICA and CFA’s Balinese division
Cinnamon point Warm cinnamon or reddish-brown points Listed by TICA
Fawn point Light beige or mushroom-toned points Listed by TICA
Red point Orange to vivid red points Listed by TICA; additional red-based classes are handled in CFA’s Javanese division
Cream point Soft cream or buff points Listed by TICA; additional cream-based classes are handled in CFA’s Javanese division
Lynx (tabby) point Tabby striping or bars visible within the colored points Recognized in TICA’s list and CFA’s Javanese division
Tortie point Mixed red or cream and darker pigment within the points Recognized by TICA; CFA uses parti-color terminology in its Javanese division
Parti-color point More than one color distributed through the points, sometimes with white Listed in CFA’s Javanese division; TICA describes related combinations and white variations

1. Seal point

Seal is the darkest and most familiar point color: the mask, ears, legs and tail appear dark brown to almost black, while the torso remains much lighter. On a young cat the contrast can be dramatic. CFA and TICA both list seal point, so the name is useful across the two major registries, although individual show standards can differ in exact shade language.

2. Chocolate point

Chocolate points are a warmer, lighter brown than seal. Look for a rich cocoa tone rather than charcoal or blue-gray on the face and extremities. Chocolate is listed for the Balinese by both CFA and TICA, making it one of the least ambiguous labels when discussing a registered cat.

3. Blue point

Blue point does not mean bright blue fur. It describes a cool slate, steel or blue-gray pigment on the points, paired with a pale body. Blue point appears in both CFA’s Balinese division and TICA’s Balinese color list.

4. Lilac point

Lilac is a very diluted-looking color: pale gray with a soft pink or lavender cast. The points can look almost frosted in daylight, especially compared with the stronger contrast of seal or chocolate. CFA and TICA both include lilac point, but photographs and lighting can make lilac resemble a very pale blue, so pedigree terminology is more reliable than a single image.

5. Cinnamon point

Cinnamon points are warm and reddish-brown, lighter and more orange-leaning than chocolate. TICA includes cinnamon among its Balinese point colors. CFA’s profile does not place cinnamon in the four-color Balinese division list, so a CFA description may use a Javanese-division classification or another permitted class instead.

6. Fawn point

Fawn is the pale counterpart to cinnamon: beige, tan or mushroom-like rather than strongly red. Subtle fawn points may be easiest to see on the ears, tail and feet, where the pigment is concentrated. TICA lists fawn; the CFA division used for a particular registration should be checked before assuming the same label applies.

7. Red point

Red points range from warm orange to a deeper tomato or brick tone. The color often reads most clearly on the mask and tail, where there is less pale body fur to dilute the impression. TICA lists red points, while CFA places additional red-based point classes in its Javanese division rather than its four-color Balinese division.

8. Cream point

Cream points are a softened version of red: buff, apricot or pale cream on the extremities. They can be understated in indoor light and may appear nearly white on the body. TICA includes cream; CFA’s additional cream-related classes are associated with the Javanese division.

9. Lynx (tabby) point

A lynx point has tabby markings inside the colored areas. You may see stripes, bars or an “M”-shaped mark on the forehead, with ringed legs and a banded tail, while the body retains the lighter colorpoint background. “Lynx point” describes a pattern laid over a base point color, so a registry may specify a combination such as a seal lynx point rather than treating lynx as one pigment.

TICA explicitly includes lynx (tabby) points in its Balinese description. CFA lists lynx point classes under its Javanese division. The same-looking cat can therefore receive different division wording depending on the registry issuing its pedigree.

10. Tortie point

Tortie, short for tortoiseshell, means the points contain a mixture of darker pigment and red or cream patches rather than one uniform color. The mixture is most noticeable on the mask and tail; the pattern can be irregular, so no two tortie points look identical. TICA recognizes tortie points. CFA’s terminology more often uses parti-color classes in the Javanese division, which is why a breeder’s label may not match a TICA label word for word.

11. Parti-color point

Parti-color point is a multi-color point description. Depending on the permitted class, the points can combine a base color with red or cream and may include white areas. It is a useful example of why “type” is not the same as “breed”: the pattern changes the coat description, not the cat’s status as a Balinese variety.

CFA lists parti-color point classes in its Javanese division. TICA describes combinations and variations involving white, silver and smoke alongside its point colors, so a TICA description may emphasize the visible combination rather than use CFA’s division name.

How to read the pattern on a Balinese coat

Solid points versus patterned points

A solid point has one principal color on the mask, ears, legs and tail. Seal, chocolate, blue, lilac, cinnamon, fawn, red and cream are color terms; they do not by themselves indicate stripes or patches. Lynx adds tabby striping, while tortie and parti-color add mixed-color areas.

White, silver and smoke effects

White, silver and smoke are modifiers or combinations in the registry descriptions, not extra Balinese breeds. White can appear as part of a permitted pattern, while silver or smoke changes how the hair shaft reflects or reveals pigment. Because the two registries group these effects differently, record the full registered description instead of shortening every unusual coat to a new “type.”

Why photos can be misleading

Indoor lighting, camera white balance and age can make blue look gray, lilac look pink or cream look white. A photograph also may not show the tabby bars or tortie patches clearly. For a pedigree cat, the registration record and the registry standard take precedence over a casual color name.

Does a Balinese cat’s color change with age?

Yes, the apparent contrast can shift. CFA’s breed standard says Balinese generally darken with age while retaining definite contrast between the lighter body and darker points. A kitten that looks nearly white-bodied may develop a deeper body tone as it matures, yet it should still show recognizable point contrast. The amount of darkening varies by individual and does not convert one named variety into another.

Color change is not a reliable way to diagnose illness. Sudden changes in coat texture, bald areas, sores, itching or a rapid loss of pigment warrant veterinary attention rather than a registry-color explanation.

Coat texture and grooming implications

CFA describes the Balinese coat as medium length, fine and silky, without a downy undercoat. TICA calls it a silky single coat that is easy to keep in condition. Those descriptions explain why the coat can lie close to the body and show the point pattern clearly.

The official profiles do not establish a particular brush, shampoo or grooming schedule as necessary for every Balinese. Check the coat routinely for tangles, especially around friction points, and ask a veterinarian or qualified groomer about persistent mats, skin irritation or a sudden change in coat quality. Grooming needs can vary with age, lifestyle and the individual coat even when two cats share the same color.

Which registry’s name should you use?

  • For TICA terminology: use its Balinese profile for seal, chocolate, blue, lilac, cinnamon, fawn, red, cream, lynx, tortie and related white, silver or smoke combinations. Read TICA’s Balinese profile.
  • For CFA terminology: first note whether the record is in the Balinese division or the Javanese division. CFA’s Balinese division lists seal, chocolate, blue and lilac points; the Javanese division covers additional solid, lynx and parti-color point classes. Read CFA’s breed profile.
  • For the physical standard: CFA’s standard describes the medium-length, fine, silky coat, lack of a downy undercoat and age-related darkening. Read the CFA Balinese breed standard.

If you are buying or registering a kitten, ask for the exact registry, division and color designation on the paperwork. That prevents a marketing label such as “rare Balinese type” from being mistaken for an officially separate breed.

Quick identification checklist

  1. Confirm that the cat has the Balinese longhaired Siamese variety description, rather than assuming every pointed longhaired cat is Balinese.
  2. Look first at the mask, ears, legs and tail, where point color is concentrated.
  3. Decide whether the points are one solid color, tabby-striped (lynx), mixed with red or cream (tortie), or a broader multi-color combination (parti-color).
  4. Note any white, silver or smoke effect separately instead of counting it as a new breed.
  5. Check the issuing registry and its division before comparing the name with another cat’s label.

Using those five observations gives a more accurate description than saying a Balinese is one of eleven breeds. The number eleven is a practical set of coat examples; the breed remains Balinese, with registry-specific color and pattern terminology.
