A dedicated cellular GPS tracker is the better choice when you need to check a pet’s location remotely, provided the tracker has GPS reception and cellular coverage. A Bluetooth locator such as an AirTag is a different kind of tool: its location depends on nearby compatible devices, so it is best treated as a supplement rather than a GPS collar replacement.
Before buying, compare the tracker’s service requirements, local coverage, battery claim and conditions, and fit for your pet. No tracker prevents an animal from escaping, so pair tracking with appropriate containment, supervision, and identification.

Tractive DOG 6: a cellular GPS example
Tractive presents DOG 6 as a dog GPS tracker that attaches to a collar. Its built-in SIM is activated through a subscription, which is separate from the hardware cost. It is designed for remote location reporting where GPS and mobile coverage are available.
Tractive advertises up to two weeks of battery life for standard DOG 6. That is the company’s maximum claim, not an independent test result; actual battery life can vary. Tractive also says weak cellular coverage can make the device work harder to connect and shorten battery life.

Tractive says the tracker works best outdoors with a clear view of the sky and good mobile coverage. Its guidance describes typical accuracy of about 8 meters (26 feet) in open outdoor spaces. Treat that as the company’s estimate for those conditions, not a guarantee in buildings or obstructed locations.
Tractive states that the tracker is waterproof to a depth of 1.5 meters (4.9 feet) for 30 minutes and supports fresh-water swimming. Check the instructions for the exact model before using it in water.

When a Bluetooth locator may help
An AirTag is a Bluetooth locator, not a cellular GPS collar. Tractive’s comparison says an AirTag cannot find a pet when no Apple device is within range. The Associated Press likewise distinguishes Bluetooth finders from dedicated GPS pet trackers. A Bluetooth locator may provide a useful clue in places where compatible devices are likely to pass, but it should not be relied on for continuous remote tracking.
If you attach a Bluetooth locator to a pet, use a secure, pet-appropriate holder. Check the attachment regularly and make sure it does not create a snagging or other safety hazard.

How to choose a tracker
- Think about where your pet could go. For remote location reporting, look for a cellular GPS tracker and check coverage in the areas your pet uses. A Bluetooth locator depends on nearby participating devices.
- Check service requirements. A cellular tracker may need a paid subscription for its built-in SIM. Confirm current plan terms and total cost with the manufacturer before buying.
- Compare battery claims carefully. Treat manufacturer battery figures as claims, not guaranteed results. Coverage conditions can affect runtime.
- Choose a secure, appropriate fit. Consider device size and bulk, attachment security, and the needs of your pet. For cats, collar release and fit deserve particular attention; Tractive describes CAT 6 Mini as an integrated safety-release collar, but that does not establish that every tracker collar is suitable for every cat.
- Keep a recovery plan beyond tracking. Use suitable containment, supervision, and identification. A tracker reports location; it does not prevent escape.
Safety and limitations
A tracker cannot keep an animal in a yard. The Associated Press quotes Andrew Bleiman, Tractive’s executive vice president for North America, saying a tracker is “not going to keep your pet in the backyard.” Use tracking alongside suitable containment, supervision, identification, and training.
Location reporting also depends on the system working in the conditions where the pet is. For a cellular GPS tracker, GPS reception and mobile coverage both matter. For a Bluetooth locator, a compatible device must be nearby to detect and relay its signal.

Will a Bluetooth tracker work if my pet is far from people?
Its remote location depends on nearby compatible devices detecting and relaying the Bluetooth signal. If no compatible device is within range, it may not provide a location. It is not an equivalent substitute for a cellular GPS tracker.
