Yes—a barn cat can kill or injure a chicken, and chicks are at the clearest risk. Adult chickens are less likely to be targeted, but they are not guaranteed safe. Keep chicks behind a secure barrier and manage cat access rather than relying on a chicken’s age or a cat’s sex to predict what will happen.
Are chicks or adult chickens more at risk?
Chicks
Small chicks can look like prey to a cat. Madison Cat Project advises keeping chicks in a fully secure area away from cats. Do not rely on supervision alone as a substitute for a barrier.

Adult chickens
Adult birds are less likely to be treated as prey, but “less likely” is not the same as safe. Madison Cat Project describes adult chickens as very unlikely prey, while Colorado State University Extension says cats can be problematic but usually do not go after adult chickens. Neither source provides a risk percentage or a guarantee.

Does a cat’s sex predict whether it will attack?
There is no evidence in Madison Cat Project’s placement guidance that female cats are more or less likely than male cats to interact negatively with chickens. That is practical guidance, not a controlled study proving every cat behaves the same way. Treat the individual cat’s access and the birds’ enclosure as the relevant safety factors.

How to reduce the risk of injury
- Keep chicks in a secure, cat-excluding space. Use a barrier that prevents the cat from reaching them, rather than assuming a cat will ignore them.
- Protect the poultry area against local predators. CDC recommends a sturdy outdoor environment that protects poultry from predators. UC Davis advises choosing protective measures based on how predators in the area hunt.
- Check the whole enclosure for access points. Select and install any reinforcement to address the specific openings and approach routes on your property. Hardware cloth may be one possible material, but the cited guidance does not specify a mesh gauge, dimensions, or a universally suitable design.
- Ask for local husbandry advice when needed. CDC recommends consulting a veterinarian with poultry experience and notes that local cooperative extension agents can offer husbandry guidance.
A sturdy enclosure reduces access; no source here establishes a single design that guarantees protection from every cat or predator.
Cat attacks and H5N1 are separate risks
Preventing a cat from reaching chickens also matters for disease exposure, but H5N1 is a separate concern from predation. CDC says cats may become infected through contact with sick or dead birds and advises preventing pets from interacting with backyard poultry and other outdoor animals. The University of Florida Shelter Medicine Program identifies outdoor-access cats, including barn and poultry-farm cats, as having greater exposure risk where the virus is circulating. Oregon’s agriculture department has warned that pet, barn, and feral cats have experienced severe illness or death during the outbreak.
