Basal cell tumors in cats are often benign, but basal cell carcinoma is malignant and can invade nearby tissue. A lump’s appearance cannot distinguish these conditions—or reliably tell them apart from other skin problems—so a veterinarian’s examination and, often, tissue testing are needed. Surgery is the usual treatment.
What causes basal cell tumors in cats?
In many cases, the cause of an individual cat’s basal cell tumor is not known. These growths are thought to involve a complex mix of environmental and genetic or hereditary factors, rather than one established trigger. The VCA Animal Hospitals overview notes that the reason a particular pet develops one is not straightforward.

Sunlight should not be assumed to be the cause. Although solar injury commonly causes basal-cell-derived tumors in people, its role in inducing these tumors in other animals is unknown, according to the Merck Veterinary Manual’s professional reference.
Older cats are more often affected. Merck also identifies domestic longhair, Himalayan, and Persian cats as having increased risk. Age and breed are risk context, not proof that a lump is a basal cell tumor.

What do basal cell tumors look like?
A basal cell tumor may be a firm, solitary lump. It can be hairless, darkly pigmented, cyst-like, raised on a stalk, or ulcerated, and may occur nearly anywhere on the body. VCA notes that these masses are often found on the head, neck, or shoulders. Their size can vary widely; size or location alone does not identify the tumor type.
Some benign tumors grow quickly or become ulcerated and inflamed. Scratching, licking, or biting can further irritate the area, cause bleeding, and increase the risk of secondary infection.

How carcinoma can differ
Basal cell carcinoma is the malignant form. It may appear as an ulcerated plaque, often on the head, extremities, or neck, and can invade nearby skin. Spread to distant sites is rare, though metastasis is possible; VCA notes it is more common in cats than in dogs. A visible lump is not necessarily cancer, and appearance alone cannot confirm either diagnosis.

A veterinarian examines the skin lesion and may collect a sample. Fine-needle aspiration can provide useful information, but it may not give a conclusive result. A biopsy followed by histopathology may be needed to identify the tumor and assess its likely behavior. Merck’s cat-owner guide says biopsy is usually required for a definitive diagnosis.

Because other skin conditions can resemble a tumor, arrange a veterinary assessment rather than trying to diagnose the lump by sight. Do not squeeze, cut, or apply home treatments to it.

Surgical removal is the usual treatment for both benign basal cell tumors and basal cell carcinomas. The Merck Veterinary Manual states, “Complete excision is curative,” for benign basal cell tumors. Carcinomas are also generally treated by surgical excision, even though they can invade locally and rarely spread.

The plan depends on the confirmed tumor type, its size and location, whether it can be completely removed, any ulceration or self-trauma, and the cat’s overall health. VCA lists cryosurgery as a possible option for smaller tumors; the available references do not provide comparative success rates for it versus surgery.

Protecting the area while awaiting care or recovering
Follow the veterinarian’s instructions and try to prevent the cat from biting, licking, or scratching the lesion. If recommended by the veterinarian, a recovery collar may help limit self-trauma; it does not treat the tumor. Contact the clinic if the area bleeds, becomes more inflamed, or appears infected.
