To find housing for a big dog, treat “pet-friendly” as a lead—not a guarantee. Before paying an application fee, ask the property manager to confirm in writing that your dog’s size and breed are allowed, what the costs and rules are, and whether the home will work for your dog day to day. This is general U.S. guidance; check your local law and the actual lease.
Start with listings, then verify the policy
Search rental listings with phrases such as “dogs allowed,” “large dogs allowed,” and “no weight limit.” Listing filters can help you find candidates, but don’t treat a filter or “pet-friendly” label as the property’s final approval. Policies can vary by building and can include size, breed, or dog-count limits.

Contact the manager before paying an application fee. Give an accurate description of your dog, including breed or mix and size, and ask for the written pet policy. HUD’s renter guidance recommends reviewing the landlord’s pet policy before moving in. HUD’s Housing Choice Voucher Tenants guidance also advises tenants to clarify pet fees and deposits up front and include a pet agreement in the lease.

- Does the policy allow my dog’s size and breed? Are there weight or breed restrictions?
- How many dogs may a tenant have?
- Are there pet deposits, monthly pet rent, one-time fees, or other charges? Which are refundable?
- Is a pet agreement required, and can I review it before applying?
- What rules apply to hallways, elevators, outdoor areas, or other shared spaces?
- For voucher housing, are there additional pet rules set by the housing agency?
Ask for the full cost breakdown and applicable rules in writing. Do not assume a verbal assurance changes the lease or replaces a required pet agreement.

Compare the home as well as the permission
A dog can be approved under a policy and still be a poor fit for a particular home. Compare each candidate against your dog’s routine and your household’s needs:
- Space and layout: Consider whether the available indoor space and layout suit your dog and daily routine.
- Access: Check stairs, elevator access, and how practical it is to take your dog outside.
- Outdoor routes: Look for nearby places and routes for regular walks and bathroom breaks.
- Shared-area rules: Find out where dogs may go and what the building requires in common spaces.
- Costs and terms: Compare up-front charges, recurring pet rent, and any written conditions—not just the advertised rent.
These are practical screening considerations, not requirements established by the HUD guidance cited here.

Get approval and costs into the lease
Before signing, make sure the lease or a signed pet agreement identifies your dog and records the terms the property approved, including fees and applicable restrictions. Keep a copy of the written policy and agreement. HUD’s renter guidance recommends clarifying fees and deposits in advance and including the pet agreement in the lease.

If you are requesting an assistance-animal accommodation
A disability-related assistance-animal request is separate from ordinary pet approval. HUD states, “An assistance animal is not a pet,” and describes the possibility of asking a housing provider for a reasonable accommodation to pet restrictions. Its public guidance also discusses supporting information when requested and circumstances involving undue burden, fundamental alteration, direct threat, or property damage. This does not mean every request must be approved or that a particular dog automatically qualifies. HUD’s Notice of Withdrawal of Guidance Documents lists its detailed 2013 and 2020 assistance-animal notices as withdrawn and says withdrawn guidance “should not be relied upon as authoritative.” For a specific accommodation request or dispute, consult current HUD and local guidance and, where needed, qualified local assistance. Coverage depends on the circumstances and applicable law.
