Reported individuals can reach about 32 feet (9.8 meters) and weigh more than five tons. The most surprising part of its story is that surface sightings reveal only a fraction of its life: tagged sharks have crossed ocean basins, dived beyond 1,000 meters, and moved through habitats where researchers cannot directly watch them.
1. It is the second-largest fish in the world
Only the whale shark is larger. NOAA Fisheries describes the basking shark as reaching a reported maximum of about 32 feet and more than five tons. Those figures describe the largest documented animals, not the average size of every basking shark. Size also varies by age, sex and region, so a sighting of a smaller animal does not conflict with the species’ giant reputation.

Its scientific name, Cetorhinus maximus, refers to a fish built for a life in open water. A long body, powerful tail and broad gill region support steady swimming while seawater passes through its filtering apparatus. The shark’s scale can make an approaching animal look threatening, but its anatomy is specialized for straining microscopic food rather than attacking large prey.

A basking shark often swims with its mouth open. Water flows into the mouth and across gill rakers, comb-like structures that retain zooplankton while filtered water exits. The shark then swallows the concentrated food. This is filter feeding, not hunting in the way people usually imagine a shark feeding.

Its prey is tiny compared with its body: copepods and other zooplankton gathered in productive patches of seawater. The shark must process a great volume of water to obtain enough calories, so slow, continuous cruising is more useful than sudden bursts of speed. A giant mouth therefore reflects the volume of water it must filter, not an appetite for large animals.
What does a basking shark eat?
It eats zooplankton suspended in the water column. Local prey density, currents and seasonal plankton blooms can influence where feeding is worthwhile. Researchers connect some movements with ocean conditions and prey availability, but the precise cues used by an individual shark are not fully resolved.
3. Rare gatherings can contain hundreds or even more than a thousand sharks
Large groups are documented, but they are unusual observations rather than a normal group size. NOAA’s review identified ten large aggregation events between June 1980 and November 2013. Within an 11.5-mile (18.5-kilometer) radius of each event’s central point, counts ranged from 36 sharks to at least 1,398.
| Observation | What was recorded | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Number of events | 10 | A limited set of unusually large gatherings |
| Observation period | June 1980–November 2013 | Historical records, not a current annual average |
| Count within event radius | 36 to at least 1,398 sharks | Each count covered an 11.5-mile (18.5-kilometer) radius |
Aerial surveys are especially useful for seeing the shape and extent of a surface aggregation. As Leah Crowe, a protected species researcher at NOAA’s Northeast Fisheries Science Center and lead author of the aggregation study, explained: “Aerial surveys provide a valuable perspective on aggregations and their potential functions, especially when coupled with environmental satellite and ship-based survey data,”
Why do basking sharks gather?
Feeding in a prey-rich patch is a plausible explanation, because many filter-feeding animals converge where plankton is concentrated. Social interaction and courtship have also been proposed. None of these explanations has been established as the universal purpose of every aggregation. A group seen at the surface may be feeding, reproducing, socializing, or responding to conditions that researchers have not yet identified.
4. Some individuals leave the coast and travel enormous distances
Surface sightings can give the impression that basking sharks stay near a familiar coastline. Satellite tags show a more mobile animal. In a small eastern North Pacific study by Dewar and colleagues, four sharks carried tags for deployments lasting from 9 to 240 days. Two sharks with the longer deployments left the coast and later moved toward Baja California and Hawaii.

That result demonstrates capability, not a fixed route for the entire species. The sample was small, tags remained attached for different lengths of time, and movements can differ among individuals and seasons. It is more accurate to say that some tracked sharks undertook long journeys than to claim that every basking shark migrates between the same destinations.
| Tagging detail | Finding | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Study region | Eastern North Pacific | Does not represent all populations |
| Number of sharks tagged | 4 | Small sample |
| Deployment duration | 9–240 days | Unequal observation windows |
| Longer deployments | Movements toward Baja California and Hawaii after leaving the coast | Not evidence of a universal migration route |
5. It can dive far below the surface
The same shark that appears to “bask” near the surface can spend substantial time at depth. Telemetry analyzed in the NOAA-hosted study showed highly variable vertical behavior. A later Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution account describing a newer study reported that some dives during long-distance migrations exceeded 1,000 meters.
Depth records matter because people who only count animals at the surface may miss much of the population’s activity. Deep water can provide different temperatures, currents and plankton layers. It may also be important during migrations, when sharks are moving between feeding areas or possibly engaging in behavior that is rarely observed from boats or aircraft.
The exact depth profile is not identical for every shark. Tag records depend on the instrument, deployment duration and the individual’s behavior, so a reported dive beyond 1,000 meters should be understood as a documented extreme in the described study, not a daily requirement for the species.
6. Their movements probably track food and ocean conditions
Tagging accounts and telemetry analyses point toward prey availability and oceanography as likely influences on movement. Fronts, currents, temperature changes and plankton concentrations can create feeding opportunities that shift over time. A shark may therefore move not simply from “summer waters” to “winter waters,” but among changing ocean features where filtering is most efficient.

This is a strong working explanation, not a completely solved mechanism. Researchers still need larger samples, longer deployments and simultaneous measurements of plankton and physical conditions to determine which environmental signals matter most. Movement can also serve more than one purpose: feeding, navigation, social contact and reproduction may overlap in the same journey.

7. Reproduction remains one of its biggest mysteries
NOAA describes the basking shark’s reproductive cycle as poorly understood. Scientists do not yet know where the species mates or gives birth. Because adults can travel far offshore and dive deeply, important reproductive behavior may occur in places that are difficult and expensive to observe.
Megan Elcock, quoted by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, put the gap plainly: “One of the biggest mysteries is their reproduction. We still don’t know where basking sharks mate or give birth, and these long-distance migrations may be tied to mating behavior happening far offshore and deep underwater, where we can’t observe it directly,” Elcock continued.
That uncertainty affects conservation. A species that matures slowly, lives for many years and produces relatively few young cannot quickly replace losses, yet the locations used for mating, gestation and birth may not be adequately protected if they remain unknown. The absence of a confirmed nursery does not mean one does not exist; it means researchers have not identified it with sufficient evidence.
8. A fall in regional sightings is not a global population census
A California Current study found that sightings and reported school sizes declined across its historical survey periods. The result is important for that region and those datasets, but it should not be presented as a current worldwide abundance estimate. Survey effort, reporting practices, weather, observer coverage and the sharks’ changing use of the area can all affect sighting records.
The study itself discusses data limitations and the need for better monitoring. A decline in records can signal a real change, but records alone cannot show exactly how many sharks remain globally or whether animals have shifted into unsurveyed waters. Regional trends should therefore be described with their geography and time span attached.
9. A giant shark is not automatically a dangerous shark
NOAA characterizes basking sharks as passive. They do not have the feeding strategy of predatory sharks that pursue and bite large prey. Their size and rough skin are the practical hazards: a swimmer, diver or small boat can be injured by accidental contact, a tail sweep or turbulent movement even when the shark is not acting aggressively.

Give any wild animal space, avoid blocking its path and never attempt to touch, ride or feed it. Keep engines and propellers away from a shark’s route, follow local wildlife rules and use a qualified operator if you join a viewing trip. “Passive” is a description of typical behavior, not a guarantee that close approach is safe.

The Wildlife Trusts identifies Cornwall, the Isle of Man and the Inner Hebrides among UK areas where sightings occur. Sightings are seasonal and never guaranteed. A reputable wildlife-watching company can help visitors find animals while maintaining a responsible distance, but even a well-run trip may return without a shark encounter because the animals move with changing conditions.

The Convention on Migratory Species species page records historical exploitation of basking sharks for liver oil, skin and meat. The species is also vulnerable because slow maturity, longevity and a low reproductive rate make recovery from added mortality difficult. Protection therefore depends on reducing avoidable deaths and improving knowledge of where sharks travel, feed and reproduce.
Conservation labels can vary with the assessment’s geography and date, so a status should always be quoted with its responsible authority and scope. The California Current sighting study, for example, supplies evidence about regional records over specified historical periods; it is not a substitute for a present-day global population assessment.

Quick answers to common basking-shark questions
How big do basking sharks get?
NOAA Fisheries reports a maximum of about 32 feet and more than five tons. That is a reported maximum, not an average adult size.
Are basking sharks dangerous to people?
They are generally passive, but their enormous bodies, rough skin and powerful tails can cause accidental injury. Observe from a safe distance and do not touch or feed them.
Do basking sharks eat people or seals?
No. They filter zooplankton from seawater. Their open-mouth swimming is a feeding adaptation for tiny prey.
Do they always live near the surface?
No. Tagging has shown variable vertical behavior, and a study described by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution reported some migratory dives deeper than 1,000 meters.
Do all basking sharks follow the Baja California–Hawaii route?
No route is universal. That movement came from two sharks with longer deployments in a four-shark eastern North Pacific tagging study.
Where do basking sharks reproduce?
Researchers have not yet established where they mate or give birth. Offshore and deep-water movements may be connected to reproduction, but that remains a hypothesis.
